BUCKINGHAM PALACE GARDEN The design of the garden as seen today dates back to George IV’s conversion of Buckingham House into Buckingham Palace from 1825. The new royal residence needed a suitably private garden, and George IV appointed William Townsend Aiton, who was in charge of the Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew, to oversee the remodelling of the grounds. PAPERS OF GEORGE III The papers of George III and George IV entered the Royal Archives when it was first established in 1914. The survival of this apparently long-lost collection was extremely fortunate: the papers were found in the basement of Apsley House, the London residence of the Duke of Wellington, in 1912, nearly a century after they had been placed there by the first Duke, the principal executor of George REMBRANDT VAN RIJN (LEIDEN 1606-AMSTERDAM 1669) This is one of the most beautiful portraits in the Royal Collection. Its companion, in the Musée Royal des Beaux-Arts, Brussels, depicts the husband of Agatha Bas (1611-58), the wool merchant Nicolaes van Bambeeck (1596-1661) The portraits are also signed and dated 1641, three years after their marriage. The couple lived in the Sint Anthoniesbreestraat, where Rembrandt himself lived from 1631 HANS EWORTH (D. 1574) Important figures at court were often portrayed in the flattering guise of mythological gods. Elizabeth I is Paris in this re-telling of the beauty contest ‘The Judgement of Paris’. The original myth saw Venus as victor over her rivals Juno and Minerva. Here, Elizabeth I keeps the prize (an orb instead of an apple) for herself, symbolising her triumph over the illustrious goddesses.Signed WILLIAM POWELL FRITH (1819-1909) Ramsgate, a seaside resort on the Kentish coast, became accessible for day trips from London in the 1840s as a result of the development of the railways. In Friths picture children building sandcastles and fashionably dressed young ladies appear alongside street entertainers and tradesmen, all rendered in exceptional detail.
