SUBLET - REELING REVIEWS Laura's Review: B-Israeli cowriter (with "Yossi's" Itay Segal)/director Eytan Fox ("Yossi & Jagger") has blended the fish-out-of-water and generational clash comedy templates with something like a coming-of-age narrative crossed with romantic drama and ended up with two nice character studies that get bogged down in third act contrivances. CENSOR - REELING REVIEWS Laura's Review: B+. Expanding upon themes from her prior short ‘Nasty,’ cowriter (with 'Nasty's' Anthony Fletcher)/director Prano Bailey-Bond, makes a feature debut exhibiting a sure hand with establishing sometimes comical but often creepy period details and anunsettling tone.
SILO - REELING REVIEWS This first feature film-on-a-small-budget, written and directed by Marshall Burnette, runs a scant 76 minutes, and while I am a huge fan of films being the shorter the better, this effort should have been longer. Beside the tense Cody’s-life-in-the-balance main story there are other major characters whose plot threads are not clearly explored THE DRY - REELING REVIEWS Well, aside from the lackluster direction and acting – I never once sympathized with any character, except one – the story is not exactly compelling. A reason for this is there are no fewer than five main narration threads, going in different, convoluted directions, presented here. And, I did not give a hoot about any of them. THE WOMAN IN THE WINDOW An inept sleight of hand brings Julianne Moore in as Jane, Anna’s over-wrought new neighbor, only to change her to Jennifer Jason Leigh, pushing the “plot” forward. What a waste of talented people, from director to writer to actors, and it makes me wonder who was actually in charge here. It certainly was not the director, writer or actors.BORN INTO BROTHELS
In that respect, "Born Into Brothels" is only partially successful as the children mostly have an innate talent for finding beauty amidst squalor. However, Zana's portrait of the eight children she uses as viewfinders is strikingly vivid. Avijit, Gour, Puja, Kochi, Manik, Shanti, Suchitra and Tapasi range in age from ten to fourteen andtheir
AMELIE (LE FABULEUX DESTIN D'AMÉLIE POULAIN) Laura's Review: B+. Audrey Tautou, who first came to attention in "Venus Beauty Institute," is the waif-like heroine whose whimsical ways of doing good (and, in one deserving case, mischief) cause fate, along with some helping hands, to return to her a love match. While this technically wondrous and charming film is a delight, it's ideasaren't
THE LIFE OF DAVID GALE A videotape showing incriminating evidence mysteriously turns up and the news sleuths keep on digging for the truth - the real truth. I found few surprises in "The Life of David Gale." The "shocking" ending, when all is finally revealed, was telegraphed very early on and I didn't fall for the twists and turns of the script by CharlesRandolph.
THOSE WHO WISH ME DEAD The tale plods away to its expected finale of good triumphing over evil and leaves a trail of mayhem and a tale of survival. It is entertaining and action packed but do not expect anything new and original. Warner Brothers releases "Those Who Wish Me Dead" in theaters and on HBO Max on 5/14/21. Robin's Review: B+. Bodega owner Usnavi (Anthony Ramos) is the popular and likable in his Washington Heights ‘hood. He saves every penny, and hopes to hit it big in the lottery, to fulfill his dream – take the money, move back to the Dominican Republic, open a beach bar andlive the good life.
THE HITMAN’S WIFE’S BODYGUARD Laura's Review: C “The Hitman’s Bodyguard” was a sporadically amusing action comedy that worked because of the odd couple chemistry of Jackson and Reynolds paired with a CRUELLA - REELING REVIEWS Robin's Review: B. One of my favorite animations ever is the 1961 classic, “One Hundred and One Dalmatians.” Less favorite were the live action remake and sequel starring Glenn Close as the evil puppy hunter, so I was less than thrilled to hear about the live action “origin” story told in “Cruella,” QUEEN BEES - REELING REVIEWS When her home is partially destroyed by a fire, Helen (Ellen Burstyn) decides to make a temporary move into the Pine Grove Senior Community and is shocked to discover an experience much like high school, complete with a trio of mean girls known as the “Queen Bees.” THE WOMAN IN THE WINDOW Laura's Review: C-A.J. Finn's 2018 bestseller was part of the wave of ‘problematic female witness’ novels that followed the huge success of ‘Gone Girl,’ (see ‘The Girl on the Train,’ etc.), a mini-trend that relied too heavily on outrageous plot twists that were either all too easy to see coming or completely off the map, so intent on pulling the rug out from underneath usTHE SPARKS BROTHERS
In 1971, Californian brothers Russ and Ron Maels' unusual musical output caught the attention of Todd Rundgren via Miss Christine, a girlfriend he had in common with Russ.THE HUMAN FACTOR
Cowriter (with his editor Oron Adar)/director Dror Moreh, whose “The Gatekeepers” examined the Israeli/Palestinian conflict from the inside out via Israel’s Shin Bet intelligence service, returns to the same subject, this time focusing on the U.S. role in Middle East peace negotiations and how they succeeded or failed based on “TheHuman Factor.”
THE WAITING ROOM
Robin's Review: B+. This is a concise (81 minutes) documentary on a day in the life of the Highland Hospital in Oakland, California. Filmmaker Peter Nicks uses a cinema verite style as his camera follows the key figures in the ER/Outpatient care unit at Highland. Laura's Review: B-There’s an awful lot to like in writer/director Bridget Savage Cole and Danielle Krudy’s feature debut. Its matriarchal society, where a group of three stands up to its shadiest, suggests New England’s history with witchcraft while its plot of how a death in a fishing community calls up old history while impacting its younger generation recalls “Manchester by the Sea.” THE UNHOLY - REELING REVIEWS Laura's Review: C.
