The kitchen is one of the largest consumers of water and energy in a home. As such, there are plenty of opportunities to decrease your carbon footprint with the right remodels. REPURPOSE: SECOND SIGHT FOR OLD SPECS 18 ideas for repurposing old eyeglasses (spectacles!) I got my first pair of glasses when I was 14 (I'm nearsighted). I wore contacts through most of my 20s but ended up doing a number on my eyes. REPURPOSE: TANKS, SKIRTS & T-SHIRTS This means I've been looking around and now I'm really inspired! The DIY empire-waste dress above is from TripOverJoy. She added fresh fabric to an old tank. Not sure I'm the right shape to pull of a little dress like this, but her finished product looks awesome on her! UPCYCLE: BOOK FOLDING In defense of making art from old books: I love books. I am a "reader" in every sense of the word - I devoured them as child, I have a PhD in linguistics, I was a reading teacher for 7 years, I'm a full-time copywriter, I have a kid's book "in the works" and I revere authors. REPURPOSE: OLD TOYS = NEW GROWN-UP DECOR Turn old doll-house furniture into a jewelry tree! Tutorial with craft-store purchased chairs here.I say, pile up a bunch of mismatched dollhouse pieces or plastic toys, which are so hard to give away orsell back.
REPURPOSE: HANG ON TO YOUR WOOD HANGERS! Yes, it's possible that old wood hangers might break, and somehow no longer be able to perform their hanger-ly function. But that's not thepoint.
REPURPOSE: OLD GUITARS CAN STILL ROCK! Old guitars can still rock - repurpose them! I am a professional guitar player and recently I have purchased one new “Yamaha F310 Dreadnought” acoustic guitar. REPURPOSE: VINTAGE LINENS If nothing else, her blog sent me looking for ways to upcycle and repurpose vintage linens, sheets, pillow cases, hankies etc. I think I found some awesome last-minute, upcycled Mother's Day gifts! REPURPOSE: NEW POP FOR OLD BALLOONS Balloons are a cheap way to bring a lot of color to a party space so we use too many of them and don't think much about it. Then we dump them in the garbage or, even worse, happily release hundreds of helium-filled orbs into the air. UPCYCLE: MASS-PRODUCED CANVAS BECOMES ORIGINAL ART A project like this doesn't fall under general repurposing or upcycled craft. Here’s one last tip on eco-friendly gardening: a good way to go easier on the earth is hydroponic gardening. It not only puts less stress on the land because it requires no soil but also conserves water by recycling the nutrient solution you add to the system. UPCYCLE: WHISK AND SPOON DRAGONFLY Turn an old spoon and whisk into a dragonfly. When the whisk flies away with the spoon you get this! No actual instructions for this little whisk fly, but head to Cuartoderecha for more detailed images that give you a pretty good idea of how to start. UPCYCLE: IRONING BOARDS AREN'T BORING... And let's face it, the modern metal ironing board is ugly and the leg mechanisms break. So they're perfect candidates for a good upcycle! Here are two groups of ideas for interesting things to do with old ironing boards, one for metal and one for wood: UPCYCLE: PLASTIC FOOD CONTAINER = ARTSY BRACELET #6 plastic is nasty, because it's Polystyrene (styrofoam). Most recycling programs won't accept it and it's potentially toxic! Find out more about the numbers you see on plastic products we use here.
