That same year it was the site of the Battle of Homestead, a defining moment in the nation’s labor history. INDUSTRIAL TOUR OF THE CARRIE BLAST FURNACES A remnant of the legendary U.S. Steel Homestead Steel Works, the Carrie Blast Furnaces are a vestige of Pittsburgh’s 20th-century domination of the steel industry. During this two-hour guided tour, you’ll hear stories about the site’s technology (including why it is nationally significant) as well as get to know the culture of itsworkers.
PITTSBURGH’S TIME AS A STEAMBOAT CITY The Arabia had been built at the boatyard of John S. Pringle in West Brownsville, PA, in 1853. This 171-foot-long steamboat sat at the bottom of the Missouri until the late 1980s, during which time the river’s path changed course. When a team of Kansas City, MO, locals learned the boat’s story, they were able to pinpoint the Arabia ’s MILL MARKS: A LEGACY STAMPED IN STEEL Mill Marks. The latter part of the 1800s was the era that made Western Pennsylvania a leader in steel production. Several events added up to enable that growth. In 1869, the transcontinental railroad was completed. This spurred growth of all railroads. 1872 saw the invention of George Westinghouse’s automatic air brake.BOST BUILDING
Bost Building. Built in 1892 as a hotel for the rapidly growing worker’s ward of Homestead, the Bost Building was at the center of one of American labor history’s most dramatic episodes – the Homestead Lockout and Strike. SOUTHWESTERN PENNSYLVANIA’S ICONIC BARGES The Port of Pittsburgh itself is the fourth busiest inland port in the nation. According to 2014 data, each lock on the Monongahela and Ohio Rivers handles about 9,000 barges per year. All 200 miles of commercially navigable waterways in southwestern Pennsylvania are in the Port of Pittsburgh District, which encompasses a 12-county region. Rivers of Steel Heritage Tours. Rivers of Steel Heritage Tours is a heritage tourism program that markets to commercial tour operators, attracting group travelers to southwestern Pennsylvania and highlighting all that our region has to offer. PITTSBURGH’S TIME AS A STEAMBOAT CITY The Arabia had been built at the boatyard of John S. Pringle in West Brownsville, PA, in 1853. This 171-foot-long steamboat sat at the bottom of the Missouri until the late 1980s, during which time the river’s path changed course. When a team of Kansas City, MO, locals learned the boat’s story, they were able to pinpoint the Arabia ’s MILL MARKS: A LEGACY STAMPED IN STEEL Mill Marks. The latter part of the 1800s was the era that made Western Pennsylvania a leader in steel production. Several events added up to enable that growth. In 1869, the transcontinental railroad was completed. This spurred growth of all railroads. 1872 saw the invention of George Westinghouse’s automatic air brake. SOUTHWESTERN PENNSYLVANIA’S ICONIC BARGES The Port of Pittsburgh itself is the fourth busiest inland port in the nation. According to 2014 data, each lock on the Monongahela and Ohio Rivers handles about 9,000 barges per year. This 171-foot-long steamboat sat at the bottom of the Missouri until the late 1980s, during which time the river’s path changed course. Built in 1900, the shop produced parts for steamboats, coal mines, railroads, and for local businesses. When it closed in 1965 the building was locked, leaving all of its tools, equipment, and machinery in place – a perfectly preserved representation of the transition from the 1800s village blacksmith to the large machineshops of the 1900s.

Docked on Pittsburgh’s North Shore near the headwaters of the Ohio River, the Explorer was designed and built to LEED standards to host the award-winning STEM student education programs now led by Rivers of Steel. An excursion on Explorer offers unparalleled opportunities to become immersed in Pittsburgh’s rich history while being surrounded by its natural beauty. PUMP HOUSE — RIVERS OF STEEL The Pump House dates back to 1892 when it was built by the Carnegie Steel Company. That same year it was the site of the Battle of Homestead, a defining moment in the nation’s labor history. Today, the building and its adjacent water tower help to interpret the tumultuous events of 1892, as well as to highlight the illustrioussteel-making

In addition to telling the nationally important stories of the region’s workers and their accomplishments, we work to advance the communities who were forced to transition to a new economy. As both a National and a State Heritage Area, we do this by CARRIE BLAST FURNACES NATIONAL HISTORIC LANDMARK Carrie Blast Furnaces. Towering 92 feet over the Monongahela River, constructed of 2.5″ thick steel plate and lined with refractory brick, Carrie Furnaces #6 and #7 are extremely rare examples of pre-World War II iron-making technology. Since the collapse of the region’s steel industry in the 1970s and 1980s, these are the onlynon
THE HARDEST WORKING RIVER TOUR The Hardest Working River Tour is offered seasonally in May and October. This spring’s offerings include tours on May 15, 16, 22, & 23. Fall dates will be added soon. CARRIE CARPOOL CINEMA Admission to the Carrie Carpool Cinema is $12 for adults and $8 for kids—and $3 of each ticket purchased directly supports the conservation of this National Historic Landmark. Each night of this drive-in movie experience offers a feature film paired with pre-event activities. Starting times are adjusted for sunset throughout theseason.

Rivers of Steel Heritage Tours is a heritage tourism program that markets to commercial tour operators, attracting group travelers to southwestern Pennsylvania and highlighting all that our region has to offer. PITTSBURGH’S TIME AS A STEAMBOAT CITY The Arabia had been built at the boatyard of John S. Pringle in West Brownsville, PA, in 1853. This 171-foot-long steamboat sat at the bottom of the Missouri until the late 1980s, during which time the river’s path changed course. When a team of Kansas City, MO, locals learned the boat’s story, they were able to pinpoint the Arabia ’s GUIDED MACHINE SHOP TOURS Duration: Please allow one hour for your tour. Location & GPS: The Machine Shop is located at 114 Water Street, Rices Landing, PA 15357. The historic town of Rices Landing is located in a valley where cell service can be limited. You may not want to rely on your GPS. Parking: Guests are welcome to park in the parking lot near the entrance of SOUTHWESTERN PENNSYLVANIA’S ICONIC BARGES The Port of Pittsburgh itself is the fourth busiest inland port in the nation. According to 2014 data, each lock on the Monongahela and Ohio Rivers handles about 9,000 barges per year. All 200 miles of commercially navigable waterways in southwestern Pennsylvania are in the Port of Pittsburgh District, which encompasses a 12-county region.
