Schools play a big role in embracing and accommodating the unique socio-emotional needs of immigrant students and their families, well beyond academics. But not all school personnel are equipped to respond to these needs. Fortunately, recent guidelines from the National Dropout Prevention Center MENTAL HEALTH RESEARCH: LATINO FAMILY ISSUES Mental health affects from having a Latina immigrant mothers. Stacciarini, et al., conducted interviews with 31 pairs of Latino immigrant mothers and adolescents to determine the effect of family, community, and social environments on the mental well-being of the adolescents. WHY DO LATINOS HAVE UNTREATED MENTAL HEALTH ISSUES A recent poll found that over 20% of Latinos say they are suffering from increased anxiety due to COVID-19 and related lockdowns, while 15.7% say they suffer from increased stress. In addition to COVID-19, we know that Latinos experience more mental health issues from discrimination, the stresses of immigration, and family and communitystressors.
NEW $9.8 MILLION STUDY IS 1ST TO SEEK FULL UNDERSTANDING Latinos with cancer face a tough survivorship journey. Many suffer advanced disease, poor quality of life, and stressful social and economic inequities. This is why a new, first-of-its-kind national cohort study will unpack the social, cultural, behavioral, psychosocial, biological, and medical influences on post-cancer life in Latino cancer survivors to fill a crucial gap in CAN FINANCIAL LITERACY HELP CLOSE THE LATINO WEALTH GAP Financial literacy can help us understand wealth and the economic opportunities available to us. Latinos face many barriers to economic opportunity, like systemic and historic discrimination, generations of inequity and wealth gaps, and a lack of access to resources on financial literacy. One business is stepping up to help teach younger Latinos about financial literacy. 2020 ELECTION BRINGS MORE LATINO REPRESENTATION TO 2020 Election Brings More Latino Representation to Congress. Though Latinos are the largest non-white demographic in the U.S., our federal government is disproportionally white. In early 2020, less than 10% of the U.S. House of Representatives were Latino, despite Latinos making up 18.5% of the population. Only 4 of 50 U.S. senators were Latino. UNIVERSITIES ACROSS THE U.S. MOVE TO ADDRESS SYSTEMIC With student pressure, universities across the nation are beginning to make statements and take action to address the systemic racism that impacts students, staff, and faculty of color. ALCOHOLISM: A RISING HEALTH CRISIS FOR LATINOS Alcoholism: A Rising Health Crisis for Latinos. When it comes to Latinos and alcohol, there is good news and bad news. Good news: More Latinos have never had even one drink of alcohol (31.8%) than their white peers (15.8%). Bad news: About 1 in 10 Latinos will have alcohol dependence at some point in their lives, according to the National THE UPSTREAM-DOWNSTREAM PARABLE FOR HEALTH EQUITY Public health advocates talk about health in an “upstream-downstream” fashion. They want to highlight the importance of health promotion and the influence of social, economic, environmental and cultural factors on health equity for Latino and other people of color. HELPING LATINOS WITH AFFORDABLE HOUSING In June 2018, MEDA broke ground on a 100-percent affordable, 94-unit housing project for seniors at 1296 Shotwell St. The project is the first affordable project to break ground in the Mission in a decade. “In the last four years, MEDA has transformed into something of an affordable real estate empire,” wrote Julian Mark for Mission Local. DOWN SYNDROME AND ITS STARTLING IMPACT ON LATINOS: A Down syndrome is a genetic disorder where a person has three copies of chromosome 21 instead of two.
