Paper Boats. Here at the Museum we have our own collection of Scottish sea inspired art. This includes painting, drawings and sculptures. One of the artists is George Wylie. He was an artist who made us notice things around us especially things that were appearing and things that were disappearing. George Wyllie built his very large Paper Boat SCOTTISH MARITIME MUSEUM JOINS SMITHSONIAN IN GLOBAL The Scottish Maritime Museum has joined with 28 museums and cultural organisations across the world, including the famed Smithsonian Institution, to give the public free and uncopyrighted access to enjoy, download and re-imagine 3D scans of some of the world’s HMS CARRICK SHIP’S WHEEL UNVEILING The wheel of HMS Carrick (ex City of Adelaide) was unveiled on the ship in Port Adelaide in November 2018.Launched in 1864, the clipper ship City of Adelaide was purchased by the Royal Navy in 1923 and renamed HMS Carrick. The ship was saved by Adelaide volunteers and moved from Scotland to Australia, arriving in February 2014. YouTube.CSCOAL.
AIR – SEA RESCUE CRAFT (ASR-10) – SCOTTISH MARITIME MUSEUM Air – Sea Rescue Craft (ASR-10) This craft, known as ASR-10, is a rare example of a type once stationed in the North Sea and English Channel and played an important role during World War II. Its role was to provide emergency shelter for the crews of downed aircraft, and it contained vital equipment and supplies, including food, drinking water “VENUS”, A SHETLAND FOURAREEN “Venus”, a Shetland fourareen. Built in 1898 on Foula, one of the most remote islands in the Shetland archipelago, this traditional fishing vessel (known in the Shetland as a ‘fourareen’) was made from pieces of driftwood. The crofter who built “Venus” used boat building techniques that had been passed down from generation to genaration and were similar to those used by Vikings onSILENT MONITOR
Silent Monitor. This small four-sided wooden block was known as a ‘silent monitor’ and was used by Robert Owen as a means of imposing discipline at his New Lanark Mills. In 2018 Scottish Maritime Museum began a programme of 3D digitisation of its collection. By using 3D technology we are bringing our collection closer to the public, enabling audiences from all around the world to explore it digitally. DUMBARTON – SCOTTISH MARITIME MUSEUM Dumbarton. Built in 1898 on Foula, one of the most remote islands in the Shetland archipelago, this traditional fishing vessel (known in the Shetland as a ‘fourareen’) was made from pieces of driftwood. The crofter who built “Venus” used boat building techniques that had been passed down from generation to genaration and were similar to those used by Vikings on AIR – SEA RESCUE CRAFT (ASR-10) – SCOTTISH MARITIME MUSEUM Air – Sea Rescue Craft (ASR-10) This craft, known as ASR-10, is a rare example of a type once stationed in the North Sea and English Channel and played an important role during World War II. Paper Boats. Here at the Museum we have our own collection of Scottish sea inspired art. This includes painting, drawings and sculptures. One of the artists is George Wylie. He was an artist who made us notice things around us especially things that were appearing and things that were disappearing. HMS CARRICK SHIP’S WHEEL UNVEILING The wheel of HMS Carrick (ex City of Adelaide) was unveiled on the ship in Port Adelaide in November 2018.Launched in 1864, the clipper ship City of Adelaide was purchased by the Royal Navy in 1923 and renamed HMS Carrick. SCOTTISH MARITIME MUSEUM JOINS SMITHSONIAN IN GLOBAL The Scottish Maritime Museum has joined with 28 museums and cultural organisations across the world, including the famed Smithsonian Institution, to give the public free and uncopyrighted access to enjoy, download and re-imagine 3D scans of some of the world’s “VENUS”, A SHETLAND FOURAREEN “Venus”, a Shetland fourareen. Built in 1898 on Foula, one of the most remote islands in the Shetland archipelago, this traditional fishing vessel (known in the Shetland as a ‘fourareen’) was made from pieces of driftwood. The crofter who built “Venus” used boat building techniques that had been passed down from generation to genaration and were similar to those used by Vikings on AIR – SEA RESCUE CRAFT (ASR-10) – SCOTTISH MARITIME MUSEUM Air – Sea Rescue Craft (ASR-10) This craft, known as ASR-10, is a rare example of a type once stationed in the North Sea and English Channel and played an important role during World War II. This week I have been researching some interesting images related to the history of shipbuilding here in Irvine, where the Museum is located. They show maintenance work being undertaken on the coaster “Lady Dorothy” atAyrshire

Paper Boats. Here at the Museum we have our own collection of Scottish sea inspired art. This includes painting, drawings and sculptures. One of the artists is George Wylie. He was an artist who made us notice things around us especially things that were appearing and things that were disappearing. George Wyllie built his very large Paper Boat IRVINE – SCOTTISH MARITIME MUSEUM Irvine. School visits typically begin at 10am and finish at 2pm and can include a mixture of guided tours tailored to your topic, time to explore our exhibitions, hands-on workshops and trails and space to have lunch. Built in 1884, Vagrant is a 23ft ‘plank on edge’ racing cutter yacht built to an early design by yacht builder William Fife III, at the Marquess of Ailsa’s Culzean Ship and Boatbuilding Co. yard at Maidens, Ayrshire.Vagrant is thought to be the oldest surviving Clyde-built racing yacht.. Built for Thomas Trocke, an Irishman who already owned a Fife-built yacht named ‘Rival’.DONATING ITEMS
