The Scarbrough House is the elegant setting for the Museum's collection of ship models, paintings, and maritime antiques. It was built in 1819, for one of the principal owners of the Savannah, the first steamship to cross the Atlantic Ocean.Scarbrough's architect, William Jay from Bath, England, created one of the earliest examples of domestic Greek Revival architecture in the South. It involved the illegal capture and transport of Africans, a conspiracy, the hierarchy of both Savannah society and the United States government, over 40 years of failed U.S. policies, and a capital punishment trial.THE GARDENS

The Scarbrough House is the elegant setting for the Museum's collection of ship models, paintings, and maritime antiques. It was built in 1819, for one of the principal owners of the Savannah, the first steamship to cross the Atlantic Ocean.Scarbrough's architect, William Jay from Bath, England, created one of the earliest examples of domestic Greek Revival architecture in the South.THE GARDENS
The Scarbrough Garden contains a Weather Bureau Kiosk, a cast-iron "temple," that was the official United States Government weather station in Savannah. It held instruments to record wind speed and velocity, barometric pressure and temperature, and was also used to post public notices. The weather station stood in Wright Square from1900 to WWII.
PIONEERS | SHIPS-OF-THE-SEA- For those interested in the preservation movement in Savannah this is an excellent opportunity to visit three houses which were part of the movement’s induction: William Scarbrough House (Ships of the Sea), Isaiah Davenport House, and the Andrew Low House. This has been a journey that EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS We offer a variety of educational programs and all include a Museum tour. Program choices include: women pirates, sailor’s valentines, and scrimshaw boxes or medallions (see below). . The arrival of the slave ship Wanderer to the Georgia coast in 1859, was one of the most controversial events of its day. It involved the illegal capture and transport of Africans, a conspiracy, the hierarchy of both Savannah society and the United States government, over 40 years of failed U.S. policies, and a capital punishment trial.MEMBERSHIPS
