Living on Martha's Vineyard when I first looked through a lens was a perfect match for my interior life; and while it appears I am photographing the landscapes around me, the truth is, IMARCIA SMILACK
In a dream, I was playing the piano, using this image as written music. The picture was seated on a music stand on my left. I could easily play the shape of the mountains as long as I viewed the image in peripheral vision, but as soon as I turned my head to look at itdirectly, I

The way I taught myself photography is to shoot when I hear a chord of color, which is one of my Synesthetic responses to what I see. I knew nothing about photography at the time so decided to just trust what I hear in my mind's eye.MARCIA SMILACK

The first note I played on the piano was green although it did not occur to me to tell anyone for twenty-five years. Even then, it was not my idea to bring up the subject because I did not know that it was a subject. The first time I heard the word synesthesia I was in a laundromat where I believed I was alone, perhaps explaining why I was dancing with abandon to the percussion of the dryerMARCIA SMILACK
This exhibition examines the impact of Synesthesia on visual art. It features the art of the known synesthetes David Hockney, Joan Mitchell, Marcia Smilack and Carol Steen; and the works by artists thought to be Synesthetic, Charles Burchfield, TomMARCIA SMILACK
A DECADE: is a three-dimensional rectangle in a bluish-gray color like that of the uniforms worn in the Civil War. It is shallow (like a gun box – don’t ask me why) suspended in space, in front of me slightly to my left in a horizontal position.MARCIA SMILACK
When I look at a picture of a brain -- before I have time to "think" or recognize what I'm actually looking at -- I see a person in a fetalposition.

I was once sent to a researcher in light therapy because I had a sudden depression no one could explain. My doctor was trying to determine if light therapy would help.MARCIA SMILACK
