The Original Art is an annual exhibit created to showcase illustrations from the year’s best children’s books published in the U.S. For editors and art directors, it’s an inspiration and a treasure trove of talent to draw upon. For art students, it’s a marvelous opportunity to examine—up close—the work ofFRANKLIN MCMAHON
Franklin McMahon. Born in Chicago in 1921, Franklin McMahon’s first artworks were grammar school posters in Beverly Hills, California, and cartoons for his high school newspaper in Oak Park, Illinois. These were the years of the Great Depressions so he began marketing his work at an early age, sending batches of drawings to the many magazines MAURICE SENDAK EXHIBIT AND SALE MAURICE SENDAK (1928-2012) illustrated his first book in 1946 at the age of 18 (published the following year) and went on to become the most important children’s book artist of the 20 th century. In association with Justin G Schiller and Battledore Ltd and in celebration of this 75 th Anniversary, the Society of Illustrators is sponsoring a Retrospective Exhibition and Sale of originalHAMILTON KING AWARD
The Hamilton King Award, created in 1965 by Mrs. Hamilton King in memory of her husband through a bequest, is presented annually for the best work in the Annual Exhibition executed by a member of the Society. One of the industry’s most prestigious awards, the selection is made by former recipients of this award and may be wononly once.
GÉRARD DUBOIS
Gerard was born in France in 1968. He grew up in the suburbs of Paris, but as a child never went to the museums in the legendary city nearby. This all changed when he moved to Paris to study graphic design and found new friends and perspectives at the city’s bars and cafes—experiences he’s remembered allDAVID GROVE
David Grove. David Grove (b. 1940) developed an interesting variation of the Coles Phillips “fadeaway” technique by melding background and foreground colors and values. This demands much preliminary planning for the final result to look so spontaneous. Grove was born in Washington, D.C. and attended the Syracuse University School ofArt.
ZANKEL SCHOLARSHIP
The Society of Illustrators proudly presents the Zankel Scholar named in memory of Arthur Zankel, whose generous bequest has made this scholarship possible. Mr. Zankel was a firm advocate for higher education. The Society is honored to seek, in his name, the best of the junior class and to financially support his or her senior year ofcollege.
