If your story is increasingly compelling as you move forward, that’s all you need to worry about. 2. IT’S ALL ABOUT THE GOAL. The events and turning points in your story must all grow out of your hero’s desire.INNER CONFLICT
Inner Conflict. All stories are built on a foundation of three basic components: character, desire, and conflict. The hero is somewhere between 10-years-old (Elliott in E.T.) and late teens (the four heroes of American Graffiti ). At the beginning of the story, childhood hasalready been
CHARACTER DESCRIPTIONS IN SCREENPLAYS It may be true that your character is “the hero’s sister-in-law” or “mean and vindictive” or “a loser” or “my son” or “from Macon, Georgia”, but none of those statements will draw us to the character, or your story. (And if you’re a screenwriter, you must omit such descriptions altogether – you can only write what the WHAT DOES YOUR HERO WANT? #1: THE OUTER MOTIVATION This is the hero’s goal that will define your story, determine its structure, and keep your audiences (or readers, viewers and prospects) engaged and invested in your hero’s success. I use the term Outer Motivation because this desire is outwardly visible. But don’t worryabout the jargon.
