WINNING ARCHITECTURE COMPETITION SUBMISSIONS: HOW THEY WON A book containing the best architecture competition submissions of 2020 with explanations of how they won and extra interviews with incredible architects who are absolutely killing it. Let us explore what these guys did to create projects that won global competitions. They have to be doing something right. Let us find out what that is. ARCHITECTURE SITE ANALYSIS GUIDE The first step of site analysis is about finding the limitations to the site, for example, the sun that goes in a set direction. These are the constraints. The things you cannot change that you need to work around or work with. That is really important. Because after you find all the limitations and constraints, the next step is finding how you MY ADVICE FOR YOUNG ARCHITECTURE STUDENTS 3 Lessons for Young Architecture Students. HOW TO USE A SCALE RULER (FOR STUDENTS) The common scales you’ll see on scale rulers are 1:1, 1:5, 1:10, 1:20, 1:50, 1:100, 1:200 and 1:500. Notice how these are all easy numbers to remember. This is really important. You won’t see any scale rulers or professional architects or engineering drawings at random scales such as 1:7, 1:52 or 1:300. I see quite a lot ofstudents make
HOW TO EXPORT AUTOCAD DWG TO REVIT First, open your DWG file in AutoCAD. Let’s centre the drawing to the origin. Select everything and type “move” into the command prompt. Choosing a centralised base point to move the drawing from, select the centre of the origin. This helps import the drawing in Revit to be centred to the origin, rather than going off the page. HOW TO MODEL A 3D SITE FROM GOOGLE EARTH IN UNDER 60 In this Sketchup and Rhino tutorial, you’ll learn how to model a 3D site in less than 60 seconds. It involves geo-locating a site from Google Earth in Sketchup, and then transferring that model to Rhinoceros 3D to create a NURBS surface 3D model of the chosen site. This is something I’ve only just discovered after spending 2 hours+ 15 REASONS NOT TO STUDY ARCHITECTURE First of all, studying architecture is bloody Intense. Architecture is a hard thing to study with a lot of work involved. Group work – sometimes you get stuck with a partner who just doesn’t do anything or a group that doesn’t care. This is one of the worst things about studying architecture. “Rest? HOW TO SCALE MATERIAL TEXTURES IN RHINO AND VRAY This can be done by changing the texture mapping of the material within Rhino. Go to properties, texture mapping, apply box mapping. The box mapping will ask you for 4 parameters. The first 3 are the dimensions of the box. For a uniform texture, this would be 2mm x 2mm x 2mm, as the current scale is 1000mm x 1000mm x 1000mm. SKETCHUP TO REVIT QUICK & EASY The typical process I see architecture students take when exporting from Sketchup to Revit is that they’ll export the Sketchup model as .dwg file – an AutoCAD drawing. SUCCESSFUL ARCHI STUDENT I wanted to create a community for these students to reside and a platform to help educate students on the things we don’t learn in architecture school. Leading into the next point, There’s no “set way” of doing things. Try new things and experiment. Architecture is subjective. There’s no set-in stone way of designing or doing things. TOP 15 MUST HAVE TOOLS FOR ARCHITECTURE STUDENTS Best Tools for Architecture Students #8: TRACE PAPER. Trace paper is transparent, the purpose behind using trace paper is to easily make iterations or changes to drawings. When you’re drawing along, you might make a mistake – you can easily recover by either scratching it out with an exacto knife, or by laying up on trace and startingagain.
THE 7 BIGGEST DRAFTING HACKS FOR ARCHITECTURE STUDENTS Step 1: Print off a picture you want to trace in colour. Step 2: Place the print face down on your sheet and dab rubbing alcohol on it. This will transfer the printer ink onto the sheet to make it look like a watercolour drawing. Step 3: Get a fine line marker and begin drawingover the top of it.

BUT WHAT IS SUCCESSFUL ARCHI STUDENT, ANYWAY? HI! MY NAME’S KYLE, AND SUCCESSFUL ARCHI STUDENT IS FOR YOU. I’m in no way claiming to be THE “Successful Archi Student”. Rather, IT’S ABOUT BECOMING A SUCCESSFUL ARCHITECTURE STUDENT.Not _me_, but US.
As I was reading a book about Real Estate, although not relevant to architecture, I remember reading that _“Success doesn’t happen AT THE EXPENSE of one another, but THROUGH one another.”_ I realised that sharing my ideas and advice doesn’t put me behind. In fact, it’s been a way to create friendships and networks with students and architects all over the world I thought would never be possible. It’s created opportunities to have 2-way relationship where we can share ideas and piggyback off one another. In May 2019, I decided to start an Instagram page to share what I had been learning. To see if there were students out there like myself. I started posting tips, advice and inspiration for other students. I realised there were students interested in what I had to share, and this page quickly grew a following of like-minded students. I wanted to create a community for these students to reside and a platform to help educate students on the things we don’t learn in architecture school. Things like managing our time, creating a positive mindset, overcoming challenges, working smarter and in general being a _successful architecture student._ And so was born this brand _Successful Archi Student_. Every day I get messages and emails from students asking questions and seeking help. I got hooked on helping others. I realised that instead of scrolling through Instagram, watching Netflix and sleeping in – I could be building something that can help others. I started creating checklists and eBooks. Blog posts and videos. A podcast to share what I had been learning and to share my experiences through architecture school. I began interviewing architects and other students and shared this with the community I had grown. My passion for helping others has grown into a community of similar people. Those who understand that SUCCESS COMES THROUGH ONE ANOTHER, NOT AT THE EXPENSE OF ONE ANOTHER. Every day I get messages and emails from students asking questions and seeking help.
