About the reserve. At over 400 years old, this ancient semi-natural woodland near Shamley Green is a rare haven for wildlife. But Cucknell’s Wood is no wilderness. Careful management is now enabling a wide range of species to flourish – and the wood to resume its productive life. In spring the flora is spectacular, with lime-greenwood
PAPERCOURT MEADOWS
Papercourt Meadows is part of the larger Papercourt SSSI (Site of Special Scientific Interest) complex that lies on a floodplain between the village of Send and the River Wey. The majority of the reserve is covered by a floodplain grazing marsh, with areas of open water and trees. The site is bordered by watercourses on three sides - these NOWER WOOD EDUCATIONAL NATURE RESERVE Nower Wood Members Days - Summer 2021. Puttenham Common is of high archaeological interest. Substantial finds have been recorded from almost every period. The main feature is the Hill Fort at Hillbury which is a Scheduled Ancient Monument, probably dating back to the Iron Age. The reserve was also used extensively by the military during World War 2 with evidence including slit BIODIVERSITY OPPORTUNITY AREAS The Government’s 25 Year Environment Plan sets out why we need to create a national Nature Recovery Network. To realise our part in this at a county level we are focusing our work in a prioritised set of Surrey’s Biodiversity Opportunity Areas, that will eventually be part of the Nature Recovery Network and where we feel we can make the most impact using our finite resources for the next HOW TO HELP WILDLIFE AT SCHOOL Recycling at school is a great way to get other people involved in helping wildlife around the world. You could set up a recycling scheme even a recycling challenge! Having a recycling challenge is a fun way to get your students thinking about what needs to be recycled. If you help them understand why we should all recycle, the challenge will FOREST SCHOOL AND OUTDOOR LEARNING TRAINING Forest school is a learner-led process with regular sessions throughout the year in a woodland or other natural environment. It gives rein to children’s innate desire to discover and to take (appropriate) risks; the role of the qualified leader is to facilitate the holistic development of the child by providing resources and teaching new skills as required by the child. BUZZARD | SURREY WILDLIFE TRUST In the spring, male buzzards perform a 'roller coaster' display, soaring up high and then swooping down over and over again to attract a mate. Once paired, buzzards construct their bulky nest in the fork of a large tree, often near to a wood. The female will lay between two and four eggs, which take just over a CONTACT US - SURREY WILDLIFE TRUST SWT Livestock Emergencies only – 07817 769672. List of Surrey County Council sites. VOLUNTEER | SURREY WILDLIFE TRUST Whether you can spare a few hours or a full day, the time you can give makes a huge difference for wildlife and people. Trust volunteering restarts from 12th April for existing volunteers. However, it will take us a little while longer to get back on our feet before we start taking on new volunteers. Please bear with us while we work our wayHACKHURST DOWNS
Hackhurst Downs has been designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest and as a Local Nature Reserve, due to its abundance of chalk grassland fauna and flora. At times the site is grazed with goats - the perfect animal for the steep slopes. Notable species of butterfly have been recorded including adonis blue, chalk hill blue, brownCHINTHURST HILL
The tower was built in the late 1930s by Lord Inchcape and is now a listed building. Walk further along and you’ll see Chinthurst Hill House, designed by Edwin Lutyens and completed in 1895. Then, of course, there is the wildlife. Birds include buzzards and sparrowhawks, red kites and wrens. WONDERFUL WILDFLOWERS Whether it is carpets of blooming purple heather, the exotic blooms of rare orchids, or the waving heads of oxeye daisies – Surrey's wild meadows and heathlands hum with life. With just 15,000 hectares of species-rich neutral grassland remaining in the UK, theseGRACIOUS POND
About the reserve. Gracious pond is a private nature reserve situated alongside Chobham Common. As a closed site, it is a sanctuary for many heathland species including the amazing raft spider, which isPRIEST HILL
Priest Hill has been transformed from abandoned playing fields to a brand new nature reserve. Nature had reclaimed the playing fields with large areas of rough grassland, scrub and hedgerows having developed over the years. Whilst these habitats supported many species, without management, the site's diversity was declining, particularly within NUTFIELD MARSHES (THE MOORS & SPYNES MERE) Spynes Mere. Spynes Mere is a wetland nature reserve of 14 ha, created from restored sand workings by WBB Minerals, who lease the site to the Wildlife Trust. Before sand was extracted the area was farmland. Spynes is a very old word, in use before the Norman Conquest to describe the area. It means 'summer fattening pasture'. Skip to main content Enable accessibility forvisually impaired
