TALKING MATS
Talking Mats is a social enterprise whose vision is to improve the lives of people with communication difficulties. Improving communication-improving lives. FREE STUFF ON COMMUNICATION DISABILITY Free Stuff on Communication Disability. As a result of our research on communication disability we have developed a number of useful templates and resources which we wish to provide as ‘free stuff’ to anyone working with people with communication disability. MEET THE TEAM
Meet the Talking Mats Team. We are a team of experienced Speech and Language Therapists and Social Workers and have combined our clinical experience, gained through our work in the NHS, and our programme of research at Stirling University. We are happy to offer telephone or email advice and support on any aspect of our work. THE HIERARCHY OF VISUAL REPRESENTATION The generally accepted hierarchy of visual representations aims to organise types of symbols by their level of iconicity, but misses some subtleties. This means that phrases such as “photos are easier to understand than line drawings” are often overgeneralisations. For example, image 1 looks more like an apple than image 2, even thoughthe

It provides: A listening space for people with learning disability to raise concerns. A structure for staff to find out what people are thinking about their lives, and raise issues that can be difficult to discuss. USING TALKING MATS WITH INDIVIDUALS WITH AN AUTISTIC Talking mats principles The Purpose -Use a mat initially for practical reasons, e.g to give information about the sensory environment, and make sure any actions from the mat are explicit and immediate. We have developed a range of Talking Mats symbol sets called “Conversation Topics” which can be used by people of all ages and abilities to take part in conversations and have a chat. IMPROVING COMMUNICATION WITH BOARD GAMES Improving communication with board games. Thanks to Karen MacKay from Focus Games for this new guest blog. Playing board games can deliver more benefits than just having fun with friends and family. In the workplace they help people to learn, collaborate and communicate, while they are having fun: 1. Breaking the ice. CONSIDERING MENTAL CAPACITY Considering Mental Capacity. When considering someone’s mental capacity its is important to bear in mind that the right to self-determination is enshrined in law. In 1948 Eleanor Roosevelt, as the chair of the United Nations Human Rights Commission, was the driving force in creating the Universal Declaration of Human RightsAct (1948).
AAC, GROUP WORK AND OCCUPATIONAL THERAPISTS By continuing this tradition, occupational therapists are well placed to take the lead in running and facilitating groups for AAC users, integrating social and community activities into the groups, for example, meeting in local shops to provide real life experience of interactions and, importantly, promoting the use of AAC to the generalpublic.
SYMBOLS VERSUS PHOTOGRAPHS Our gut feeling is that for many people who use Talking Mats (who we refer to as ‘thinkers’), symbols may be more helpful than photographs and, although we have not carried out any academic research, we have lots of anecdotal evidence from a number of practitioners about some of the pitfalls of using photos. It was particularly helpful as a way of talking about difficulties, where a focus on the mat rather than on direct questioning was useful. We are a team of experienced Speech and Language Therapists and Social Workers and have combined our clinical experience, gained through our work in the NHS, and our programme of research at Stirling University. We are happy to offer telephone or email advice and support on any aspect of our work. It was particularly helpful as a way of talking about difficulties, where a focus on the mat rather than on direct questioning was useful. As expected, more people were able to access the more concrete topics we discussed and the more abstract topics were more difficult.
