Hercules Pavilion
Located on Main Street and overlooking Stony Brook Harbor, the Hercules Pavilion is one of Stony Brook's more unusual attractions. The massive bust of Hercules once served as the figurehead of the USS Ohio, the first ship launched from the Brooklyn Navy Yard in 1820. The ship was decommissioned and destroyed, but the figurehead was saved. After changing hands at least twice, the Hercules bust was acquired by philanthropist Ward Melville in 1954. The pavilion is also occupied by the Polaris whaleboat, which is believed to be the only surviving artifact from the Charles Hall expedition to the Arctic in 1871.2
Cashmere Museum and Pioneer Village This entry includes a virtual tour The Cashmere Museum & Pioneer Village collects and preserves the natural and cultural history of our local region. Exhibits cover Native American objects, Pioneer artifacts, geological specimens, taxidermy, and ornithology. The Pioneer Village consists of 20 original structures from the area and are furnished with antiques from the late 19th and early 20th centuries.3
Lincoln High School
The former Lincoln High School has been an important educational, social, and civic landmark for the local African American community since it was established in 1937. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, it operated from 1937 to 1969 and now serves as a community gathering place for civic and social functions. The building represents a brief period when white South Carolinians who hoped to forestall racial integration supported better facilities for Black students after Black leaders pointed out that the doctrine of separate but equal implied that segregation was only legal if school facilities were equal. While the era of explicit segregation may seem distant, this former school is one of many public schools created prior to Brown v. Board that are now home to community organizations. Trump-Lilly Farm
This entry includes a virtual tour The Trump-Lilly Farm is a quintessential example of subsistence farming in West Virginia. The farm is named for two families that occupied the homestead between 1888 and the latter half of the twentieth century. Life was difficult on the farm. The families grew crops, raised animals, hunted local game, and foraged whatever they could. Almost all of the buildings erected to serve the farm are still standing in their original condition, a contrast to many other farm buildings in Appalachia, which were demolished or modernized. This property is now owned by the National Park Service, which has stabilized and preserved the buildings and grounds as a space to visit and see what frontier life was like.6
Ulysses S. Grant Presidential Library Established in 2012, this presidential library offers exhibits and records related to the life and career of Ulysses S. Grant, the 18th President of the United States, as well as the history of his years in office. Similar to other Presidential libraries, the organization is operated through private support and the National Archives. The Library includes artifacts, research collections, and personal effects that were owned by Grant and members of his family. This presidential library was opened on the 50th anniversary of the funding of the Ulysses S. Grant Association and receives administrative support from the U.S. National Archives and Records Administration. In addition to private donors, the library has received federal support from the National Endowment for the Humanities and other entities.7
Carnegie Public Library The old Carnegie Public Library was the city's first and only public library in Sumter from 1917, when it was built, to 1968 when a new library opened. Though relatively small and apparently vacant as of mid-2021, it remains an important landmark in Sumter. It was one of the thousands of libraries built around the county using funds donated from philanthropist and steel magnate Andrew Carnegie. Local architects Herbert Johnson and N. Gaillard Walker designed the building in the Beaux-Arts style. The building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1994 and served as the headquarters of the Sumter County Library and the local genealogical society for many years.8
Joseph Lloyd Manor (Home of enslaved poet, Jupiter Hammon) The Joseph Lloyd Manor House was completed in roughly 1768. Built in the federal style, the home sits on two acres of land and though changes have been made to the home over the years, it maintains a number of its original features. It was originally part of the Manor of Queens Village, a 3,000-acre provisioning estate. It remained in the Lloyd family until well into the nineteenth century. The manor is also notable for being the home of Jupiter Hammon, an enslaved man who has the distinction of being the first published African American poet. Hammon was born on the estate in 1711 and his works were published during his lifetime. Joseph Lloyd Manor is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.9
Samuel Adams Statue
This statue commemorates Founding Father, Samuel Adams (1722-1803). A native of Boston and graduate of Harvard College, he became an early proponent of American independence from Great Britain and one of the leaders of the Sons of Liberty. A signer of the Declaration of Independence, Adams served in the Massachusetts House of Representatives (1765-1774) and the Continental Congress (1774-1781) before becoming lieutenant governor (1789-1794) and then governor of Massachusetts (1793-1797). In 1873, the Commonwealth of Massachusetts commissioned sculptor Anne Whitney to design a statue of Adams for inclusion in National Statuary Hall within the U.S. Capitol. Made of Carrera marble, the sculpture was installed in 1876. A few years later, the City of Boston commissioned a bronze casting of the statue. Dedicated in 1880, the sculpture depicts Adams standing defiantly with his arms crossed and a scroll of papers in his right hand. Dressed in period clothing, he looks out into the distance. The statue rests on a tall pedestal made of Quincy granite. Originally installed in the city’s Adams Square, it now resides on Congress Street near FaneuilHall.

Monroe Carnegie Library (Monroe County History Center) In 1918, the Bloomington Library Board completed the construction of this building on land that once housed a school for African American. The library was built with matching funds from Andrew Carnegie. Bloomington was one of 2500 communities who built a library with the industrialist's support as he donated an estimated $56 million for library construction. Though the town attempted many times to acquire public support and funds to build a library from 1897 to 1915, it wasn't until 1917 that the project finally came to fruition. Prior to that time, the library shared space with the courthouse. The library used the building from 1918 to 1970 and since 1994, the building has served as Monroe County History Center. VIRTUAL MUSEUM AND SITE TOURS AND SUPPORT FOR USERS We have FANTASTIC NEWS!Staring at the end of this month, we will have a team of three recent Ph.D. s with classroom and public history experience who will be available to help individuals, instructors, and organizations utilize Clio. Funding for this has been made possible by donations and a matching grant, and we still need some help with the match. (more on that later)With the uncertainty facing instructors and institutions alike, we know that having someone you can call, email, or video conference with will be reassuring. Each is available to help instructors and organizations, including one-on-one support and offering webinars and video conferencing with staff and students. In addition to helping instructors and organizations, I also believe that this will be an excellent opportunity for these recent graduates as they seek to build a nationwide network in preparation for their entry into a challenging job market next year. Our first of the three, Zac Cowsert, has already started and you may reach him by sending a message to zac@theclio.com Zac looks forward to helping faculty and organizations and members of the public use Clio.More big news… Yesterday we released a significant update to Clio that supports a variety of new options. In addition to the walking tours and driving tours that connect people to individual landmarks, Clio now supports virtual tours of museums and sites that work from any location and are designed to support in-person visitation. There are also options for providing interpretive tours of parks, hiking trails, historical and cultural sites, college complexes, cemeteries, and state and national parks.Because the in-person experience of a Clio tour or trail can include location-aware audio, images, sources, links, and other media, the virtual tours can offer the same interpretive experiences previously supported by shared devices and touchscreens. By bringing this content to a user’s device in a platform that is non-profit and free for everyone, we hope to provide a safe and free alternative at a time when museums and sites are facing both a budget and public health crisis. Representatives of organizations such as museums, historical societies, and universities will also be able to use Clio to create digital story maps. Clio was previously limited to individual entries and tours for landmarks such as markers and buildings that could be pinned to a precise location. The story map layer provides a new option and a way to use maps to tell a story about a neighborhood or topic without the restriction of making each part of that story correspond with a physical landmark. With a digital story map, all content is self-contained within an interpretive layer, which frees authors to build entries that are either roughly or precisely pinned to the map to build a narrative. Verified users of organizational and instructor accounts, along with their students and staff, will now see the following six options when they hit the “create a tour” button: Members of the public will see these three options when they click on the “create a tour” button as well as guidance to contact and work with their local museums, historical societies, and other organizations:These new options have been made possible by building a new system that allows authors to designate entries as either stand-alone entries or contributing entries. Stand-alone entries are similar to the kinds of entries that Clio has supported in the past- entries that interpret a single landmark such as a historical marker, museum, monument, landmark, or historic building. Contributing entries offer all the same interpretive options (text, audio, images, source, links, etc.), but they only appear withing a tour or within a stand-alone entry. As a result, you can now create a stand-alone entry for a museum or site and then create contributing entries that “live” within that entry and come together to form a tour. If this seems complicated, don’t worry. We built guidance at each step, along with examples. We also made it easy to change entries from stand-alone entries to contributing entries (and vice versa). This makes it easy to “play around” and immediately see how each new entry changes your tour or trail and make adjustments in draft mode or in real-time and see each change in the website and app. And now, just one more thing…In the past, Clio could only support one entry for each landmark. While there can still only be one stand-alone entry for any marker, building, monument, etc., a landmark can have multiple contributing entries. This is because each contributing entry “lives” within a tour, and this offers the opportunity for authors to create entries that focus on a particular theme or event without creating a second Clio entry for the same landmark on the general Clio map.We have also added new guides and resources for instructors and organizations, and we will be publishing new videos and guides to correspond with these new options and the needs of instructors as they use Clio in either face-to-face or online courses. You will likely notice some small changes over the next few weeks, and as always, there will be that mutual learning curve that comes with major updates to a familiar website. We tested and retested, and while we know that you will love some of the changes, we also know that we probably got a few things wrong. If you notice a bug or have an idea, we hope you will tell us. We’re easy to reach at clio@theclio.com Thank you for your support of Clio. This completely free website and mobile application is only possible thanks to tax-deductible donations and the content created by historians and organizations. If Clio has helped you, please consider a small donation as every penny will support part-time work for students and recent graduates during this crisis. Please consider sharing Clio with your colleagues and friends and via social media, and if you have a website, please consider adding a link to Clio. And if you have enjoyed using the mobile app, please consider authoring a review. It’s no secret that app stores rank apps by the number of reviews and rankings, so every positive review means that more people will discover Clio.Thank you again for your support of Clio. I have been deeply moved by the way people have used this resource in their communities, and I am committed to improving it a little each day.DavidDr. David TrowbridgeINDIVIDUAL ENTRIES
