Yet there are so many powerful forces pushing our nation’s school meal program—and, indeed, almost all other kid-centric environments, from school aftercare to soccer practice—to offer kids ultra BREAKING: IN A NARROW VICTORY, FEDERAL COURT BLOCKS USDA Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue. Last April, I told you about two federal lawsuits seeking to block a 2018 U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) rule that weakened two key school meal nutrition standards. Yesterday, the Maryland District Court handed public health advocates a victory by vacating that rule.. But based on my own reading of the court’s opinion, the ruling is a narrow one. CHICKEN FROM CHINA: AN IMPORTANT FOOD SAFETY UPDATE In early 2014, I and fellow food advocate Nancy Huehnergarth launched a Change.org petition seeking to keep American-raised chicken processed in China out of our children’s school meals. We did so out of concerns over China’s deeply troubling food safety record (read about some of the sickening incidents here), concerns that were apparently shared by our almost 330,000 petition MY PROBLEM WITH JAMIE OLIVER'S WAR ON FLAVORED MILK As those who’ve followed “Food Revolution” know, Jamie Oliver has decided to make flavored milk Public Enemy Number One. In the first episode of this season, J.O. filled a school bus to near-bursting with white sand to demonstrate how much sugar is in the flavored milk offered to Los Angeles USD students each week.* He’s also circulating an online petition to get flavored milk out of REAGAN REVISITED: SHOULD PIZZA COUNT AS A SCHOOL FOOD For those of you too young to remember the early 80s, President Reagan once caused a ruckus by attempting to lower school food nutrition standards as a means of reducing federal spending on the program. The big headline was that ketchup was going to count as a vegetable, leading to a huge public outcry and an eventual retreat by the Reaganadministration.
INTERVIEW WITH J.M. HIRSCH, FOOD EDITOR OF THE ASSOCIATED A while back I posted an amusing video entitled, “Would You Give Your 2-Year-Old a Chef’s Knife?” The creator of that video, J.M. Hirsch, actually did give his toddler a chef’s knife, compelling evidence of the importance he places on teaching children about food from an early age. BETTINA'S BOOK: KID FOOD Bettina’s Book: KID FOOD. My first book, Kid Food: The Challenge of Feeding Children in a Highly Processed World, was released by Oxford University Press on November 1, 2019. It’s my attempt to offer parents and other interested readers a wide-angle view of how we feed kids in America today—and how we could do better. "IT TAKES A VILLAGE TO PACK A LUNCH" Warm It Up. First, I urge you to follow the advice of blogger Bri of Red, Round or Green and first fill the Thermos jar with boiling water, letting it sit for ten minutes or so while you prepare the food. This tip has helped a lot in keeping food warm at lunch time. And yeah, I know the little instruction sheet that comes with the Thermos tells WHAT WOULD HAPPEN IF YOU LET TODDLERS CHOOSE ALL THEIR OWN Last week I came across this Wall Street Journal article by Mark Schatzker, a journalist who has a book coming out next week called The Dorito Effect: The Surprising New Truth About Food and Flavor. The book will explore the connection between foods’ natural flavor and their nutritional benefits, including the ways in which modern agriculture has depleted our MY LOVE AFFAIR WITH STACY Last year, former FDA Commissioner David Kessler came out with a book in which he posited that the food industry, somewhat like the tobacco industry before it, has perfected the ability to make consumers crave their products through the excessive use of salt, fat and sugar. I haven’t yet gotten around to reading the book, but I remember hearing an interview with Kessler on NPR in which SCHOOL NUTRITION ASSOCIATION SEEKS TO LOOSEN "A LA CARTE Should foods like these be available on your child’s cafeteria a la carte snack line — and on a daily basis? When Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue announced late last year that his agency was permanently weakening certain school nutrition standards, it was a resounding victory for the School Nutrition Association (SNA).. It’s a classic food industry marketing ploy: first reinforce parents’ belief that all kids are hardwired to refuse healthy foods like fruits and vegetables, then offer your company’s [ sugary “toddler drink” / frozen “kid food” meals / boxed mac-n-cheese DAILY COFFEE AND DONUTS FOR SCHOOL BREAKFAST: WHY IT MAKES And as I sat through this district’s presentation, school food professionals in the audience were eagerly asking for more details about all of it: the cost of the coffee cups, whether the lid and cardboard sleeve were included in the price, which extra-brightly-colored Trix were used in the treats shown above (apparently Trix Swirls is the more eye-catching choice). KIDS AND TABLE MANNERS: HOW MUCH CORRECTION IS TOO MUCH Kids and Table Manners: How Much Correction is Too Much? August 5, 2010 by Bettina Elias Siegel.
