THE YEAR OF MUD
The Year of Mud is dedicated to providing personalized, enriching Natural Building Workshops. Our workshops are a place where you can take your curiosity to the next level, forge new friendships, and return home with essential skills and knowledge that participants often claim exceeded their expectations.COB HOUSE FOR SALE
Cob House, Gobcobatron For Sale. Notice 12/2015: Gobcobatron has been officially sold — congrats to the new owner!I will leave this page up for the time being for reference. Thanks for stopping by. Gobcobatron, one of the most recognized homes at Dancing Rabbit Ecovillage in northeast Missouri, is for sale. It’s a cob house that’s been featured in Yes! magazine, Popular Mechanics, Parade APPLYING LIME PLASTER ON FASWALL BLOCK HOME Applying lime with Japanese jigane trowel. We used steel trowels to apply the plaster and compress fiberglasss stucco mesh, which should help immensely with the longevity of the plaster work. Actually, most of the walls are blessedly well-protected, except for the large east-facing wall. Even though lime is much more resilient than clayplaster
JAPANESE PLASTER HAWK: HOW TO MAKE YOUR OWN Japanese-style plaster hawks are a comfortable, ergonomic alternative to the typical hawk design you come across in the states. Best of all, you can very easily make your own with only a few basic materials and customize the proportions to your liking. BUILDING WITH COB: HOW TO MIX A BATCH OF COB Mixing Cob: Step By Step. Lay out a recycled lumber tarp (at least 6’x8′). Load up your wheelbarrow of sand, and dump it in the middle of the tarp. Use your hands to carve out a small depression in the middle of the sand pile. Pour off the water from 3 buckets of clay, and dump the clay into the sand pile. TIMBER FRAME JOINERY Timbers are an exactly match and positioned and typically require specialized tagging/marking systems to track their future assembly. Scribes, Plumb bobs and specialized transfer tools are often used to layout the joinery. With Scribe Rule, you can more easily lay out round wood and irregular timbers. There is a lot more hefting andmoving of
MY LARGE DUTCH TOOL CHEST PLANS & DESIGN I know I’ll eventually acquire more, but for now a moderately-sized tool chest is more than enough for me. While searching around for ideas, I came across these plans for a Dutch tool chest in Popular Woodworking. (The PDF download is worth the $6 for the plans and drawings.) The finished Dutch tool chest with blue milk paint. TRITON TPL180 7" PLANER: WIDE ELECTRIC HAND PLANER Rough sawn timbers have their place, but it’s not always what you want in a finished building. And the options for wide electric hand planers is limited from what I can tell. You basically have three options: a $600 6 3/4″ wide Makita planer, a $2000 HEAVY DUTY HOMEMADE DOOR DESIGN Custom Door Details. The design is essentially a sandwich, with a 1.5″ polyiso foam board surrounded in 3/4″ tongue and groove boards. The construction was fairly simple thanks to the ease of using t&g. I simply laid out the proper number of t&g boards, cut them to length, clamped them together, and braced them with an X style brace. DIFFERENCES BETWEEN INSULATION AND THERMAL MASS Synthetic materials (including foam board) frequently have higher R-values per inch, up to R-6.5 per inch. In the most simplistic terms: the higher the R-value, the more effective the insulation is. The more effective the insulation is, the less thickness you need to achieve high levels of efficiency. THE CONTINUOUS ARM WINDSOR CHAIR The Continuous Arm Windsor Chair. Apparently, the continuous arm Windsor chair is a true American design, developed in New York in the 18th century. But the real reason I was drawn to this chair is the super slick appearance. I mean, look at that arm. I love the flow, and how lightweight and trim the appearance is, but at the same time,it’s
AXES WE LOVE
Pictured above is the Djarv line of carving axes, ranging from a 1.3 kg weight model with a 14 cm edge length, to 0.8 kg and 10 cm, and finally the “baby axe” with a weight of 0.4 kg, and a 7 cm edge. The particularly mean-looking Timber Axe. This beast SHOU SUGI BAN: JAPANESE CHARRED WOOD FINISH AND Shou sugi ban (more properly, ‘yakisugi’) is a traditional method of wood preservation. Charring wood is not specific to Japan, but charring sugi (Japanese cypress) for cladding use is a traditional feature of Japanese architecture. It’s been used primarily for practical reasons — charred wood is less susceptible to rot andmoisture
DIY ROUBO WORKBENCH PLANS DIY Woodworking Workbench Plans. The time has finally arrived. After almost two years of dreaming about building a workbench for woodworking, and sitting on a cache of wood for the project for nearly a year, we’re building a Roubo workbench. This style of bench is named after André Jacob Roubo, a French woodworker who lived duringthe 18th
WOODEN PIZZA PEEL
Making your own wooden pizza peel is a fairly simple process, and can be done in a short morning with the proper tools and material. It’s nice to be able to make the peel from one solid piece of wood, instead of laminating different pieces together. I should note that quarter-sawn lumber would be best for a solid wood peel, or at leastwood
HANS KARLSSON: AMAZING HAND FORGED TOOLS Greenwood & Leather Crafts has a nice mini-interview with Hans Karlsson about his entry into blacksmithing. They’ve also got a nice little write-up with photos about making a dough bowl with a basic set of his carving tools. Karlsson runs a small outfit, but makes many many varieties of gouges, axes, drawknives, inshaves, etc. GRAND FINALE: BUILD A BETTER OUTDOOR OVEN To prepare your light clay straw, grab a wheelbarrow (or tarp), and shake a few flakes of straw out. To make your clay slip, use a high-powered electric drill with a large paddle (like a Hole Hawg), and spin up a 5 gallon bucket partially filled with slaked clay. The clay slip should be very thin, like the consistency of chocolate milk. BUILD YOUR OWN DIY BARREL OVEN There’s an up-and-coming outdoor oven out there: the wood-fired barrel oven promises some pretty compelling advantages over a cob or masonry oven, and it is the subject of Max and Eva Edleson’s latest Build Your Own Barrel Oven book. It’s the first I’ve heard of this particular design, and I must say, it has definitely captured my attention, and the Edlesons’ book does a fantasticThe Year of Mud

UPDATE 1/9/2021: Last summer, we had to cancel our full lineup of Natural Building Workshops due to ongoing COVID-19 concerns. At this point, it’s unclear how & when to go about scheduling for 2021 since we don’t have full confidence that safety will be significantly improved. Basically, we have to play it by ear. Scheduling will not be nearly as early as we normally like. The best way to keep in touch is to sign up for our newsletter and we’ll make announcements for new classes when we’re able. Please take care out there, friends. 2021 WORKSHOPS: NOT TO BE MISSED NATURAL BUILDING ESSENTIALS WORKSHOP An excellent course for new natural builders – learn about the versatility of clay and straw in our 4 day hands-on class JAPANESE CARPENTRY WORKSHOP A rare chance to learn traditional carpentry methods and skills with professional carpenters from Japan TIMBER FRAME WORKSHOP One of our most popular courses: a 7 day exploration of traditional timber framing techniques with hand tools.
