THE QUAD
Located in the heart of campus, UNC Asheville’s Quad is the place where academics and extracurriculars intersect. This large green space is surrounded by academic buildings, including Ramsey Library and the main administrative building Phillips Hall, and lined by maple trees that inspire an annual tradition of Turning of the Maples, celebrated each fall. It’s also the setting for the Farm-to-Table Dinner in September, campus concert series such as Echofest and outdoor movies, and spring commencement, weather permitting. On any given day, you’ll see classes circling up for an outdoor meeting, hammocks hung from tree-limbs for laid-back study sessions, slack-lining, jam sessions, or yoga breaks. "Before we get started, let me explain the many ways you can explore our beautiful space.-You can click on the forward facing arrow to start walking around. -You can jump to the next stop by clicking on the ""Next"" button. -Now, if you already know where you want to go, you can select any location by using the list OR by clicking directly on the map. -Lastly, remember that you can explore any particular location in more detail by clicking the supplemental icons."

RAMSEY LIBRARY
Ramsey Library is the central academic resource on campus or online. The entrance offers Argo Tea and collaborative spaces for study, including a connected Glass House or greenhouse. Ramsey Library’s first floor houses hands-on spaces, with Ramsey Library’s Media Design Lab and CrAFT Studio interactive learning spaces offering students access to software and equipment to create images, video, printed designs, presentations, audio, websites and more. No experience is needed since lab assistants are available to help you through the process. You’ll also find the Academic Success Center on the lower level, with all of the offices and resources to connect with your classes ona deeper level.

LIPINSKY HALL
Pass by Lipinsky Hall or step inside, and you are likely to hear something wonderful. This building is home to UNC Asheville’s Music Department, and with a 650 seat auditorium, also hosts major events and notable speakers on campus, including Summer Reading authors Wes Moor, Jennine Capó Crucet, and Kevin Ashton, as well as StoryCorpsfounder Dave Isay.
At UNC Asheville’s Music Department, the classical co-exists with the contemporary. We explore the many connections and interactions between music and all facets of human life through instruction and performance. Students learn in cutting-edge classrooms at the only university where music pioneer Bob Moog – inventor of the Moog Synthesizer – ever taught. In addition to being dedicated teachers, our faculty are active musicians who enrich Asheville’s thriving music scene and the cultural life of our campus.*
ZEIS HALL
UNC Asheville’s ranking as a top 10 national public liberal arts university also recognizes a robust science curriculum, with majors in Atmospheric Sciences, Biology, Chemistry & Biochemistry, Computer Science, Engineering, Environmental Studies, Mathematics, New Media, Physics & Astronomy, and Pre-Health Professions. Many of these programs are located in adjacent buildings: Zeis Hall and RhoadesRobinson Hall.
Zeis Hall is four stories and houses the departments of Biology, Chemistry & Biochemistry, and New Media. It also features 44 teaching and research labs that allow students to learn in small groups, mirroring leading science and research workplaces, and many of these labs are funded by the National Science Foundation, North Carolina GSK Foundation, and National Geographic Explorers.*
BELK THEATRE
Unique to a college campus, Carol Belk Theater has almost 200 seats and is arranged "in the round" so that the stage is entirely surrounded by the audience. Theatre UNCA usually performs two major productions each semester and one-act plays directed by senior drama students offering first-hand experience in all aspects of theatre production. Go behind the scenes with the costume shop or scene shop or take center stage with theatre and dance. Auditions are held at the start of the semester and are open to all UNCA students, faculty, and staff. In the summer they host Asheville Theatre for Young Audiences, a theatre camp and production company. Students do not have to be drama majors to participate in productions, and that opens doors for students across majors and extracurriculars to add acting, stage management, and set design to their resumes.*
MULLEN & JAMES HUMANITIES HALL The humanities hall is named for pioneering faculty emeriti Dolly Jenkins-Mullen, Dwight Mullen, Charles James and Deborah (Dee) Grier-James, who taught in political science, chemistry and English, joining the University in 1984. They were among the university’s first African-American faculty members, recruited as part of an effort to diversify the faculty. The Mullen & James Humanities Hall, as its name suggests, is home to Humanities classes and lectures, as serves as a forum for discussions and visiting writers, and has been the site for NPR recordings, such as Krista Tippett’s On Being. The humanities curriculum is a hallmark of UNC Asheville. Humanities courses aren’t just about history; they draw together faculty and subject matter across subjects including history, literature, philosophy, religion, natural science, social science and fine arts. Humanities helps us make educated and ethical decisions as we strive to solve problems and make progress as a civilization. Students take three Humanities courses, usually one each year, and choose between two senior capstone experiences.*
THE BULLDOG
The Rocky statue, a gift from the class of 2000, was created by Class of 1998 art student Matt West who’s now a professor here). Legend says he worked on Rocky in the same clothes everyday, and when he was done, he put all his clothes in Rocky before sealing him up. Students give Rocky a good-luck pat before they start their first semester at Convocation and again as they walk to Commencement, a favorite campustradition.
Rocky anchors the athletics and recreation corner of campus.*
SHERRILL CENTER & KIMMEL ARENA The Sherrill Center is home to the North Carolina Center for Health and Wellness, the Health & Wellness Promotion department, which is one of the most popular majors, the fitness center, Kimmel Arena, dance studios, the meditation room, and the wellness cafe, which features Rosetta’s, a local watering specializing in vegan dishes. The campus location brings some of the best food from downtown to a convenient location for students to stop by between classes or workouts. Kimmel Arena is home court to UNC Asheville’s Division I men’s and women’s basketball teams. It seats more than 3,000 for games, and even more when the University hosts acclaimed national speakers, such as Bryan Stevenson, author of Just Mercy. Both men’s and women’s basketball have won Big South titles and played in the NCAA Tournament.*
CAMPUS RECREATION
UNC Asheville’s Campus Recreation is an expert resource for the campus community, encouraging everyone to explore, move, play, and thrive. Whether you’re interested in taking a fitness class, going on a hiking trip, using the gym and basketball courts, going for a swim, or signing up to play one of our intramural sports, Campus Rec has something for you. Designed to foster community, the six buildings feature four-, five- and six-bed configurations, with laundry rooms on site and full kitchens in each apartment. The Woods residents have the option to purchase a block meal plan, but it’s not required. The sixth building, Chestnut Hall, is located closest to University Heights and includes a welcome center, fitness room and an apartment for The Woods community director.*
BAILEY WELCOME CENTER The Donna and David Bailey Welcome Center located in Chestnut hall welcomes visitors to campus. Look for visitor parking and the friendly Bulldog statue in front of the Welcome Center and stop by for admission and financial aid information and an in-person campus tour. The Office of Admission and Financial Aid is here to assist you at any stage of the application process. Applications are available in early fall with Early Decision deadlines of November 1st and January 15th each year. Early Decision gives priority consideration to students who are certain that UNC Asheville is their first choice university and it is binding. The regular decision deadline is February 1st. Annual events such as discovery day, open houses and junior preview days offer an opportunity to explore UNC Asheville’s campus and curriculum in more detail. Scholarship candidates are invited to a Scholarship Day for interviews and overnight visits are available to fully experience a day in the life of a UNC Asheville student.*
DINING HALL
The University Dining Hall in Brown Hall features all of the ingredients for an innovative approach to dining on campus. With all-you-care-to-eat options, it’s open every day with a healthy selection of locally-grown foods for breakfast, lunch, and dinner and always includes vegetarian, non-vegetarian, and vegan options. Some stations are made-to-order, and the G8 station is customized to help diners avoid any of the eight major allergens. Regional and ethnic foods are on the hot line menu at least weekly - everything from Thai Beef Salads on Nourish to a curry bar on the Savor hot line offer a taste of far off places.*
HIGHSMITH STUDENT UNION UNC Asheville’s Highsmith Student Union is more than just a building! It is also the living room of campus, serving the university community by providing opportunities for personal growth and lifelong learning that align with a liberal arts education and enhance thestudent experience.
Highsmith Union’s Student Life Porch gives students an inviting space to study, take a break between classes, and hang out with friends. The nearby meeting spaces, complete with digital screens that students can easily connect their devices to, are ideal for group discussions or collaborating on projects. The newest addition to Highsmith Student Union is the Blue Ridge Room, a multipurpose room with seating up to 500. On the way to the Blue Ridge Room, people can check out the rotating art exhibitions featured in the Student Art Gallery.*
STUDENT LIFE
Inside Highsmith Student Union is a hub of activity, from student organizations such as SGA, Asheville Campus Entertainment, greek life, the Intercultural Center and Veterans Center, to the Key Center and Career Center. In other words, this is the place to gain hands-on experience or share your experience. It’s also the place to check your mail, buy your books or supplies, grab a bite to eat and take a break in the game room. Students can also use their meal plan in Highsmith’s food court. Set up much like a mall food court, offerings include Austin Grill, which serves burgers and sandwiches along with Tex-Mex favorites like tacos and burritos, and Build, a pizza shop where you can build your own flatbread pizzas and salads. Soup, sandwiches, sushi, drinks, coffee and snack food are also sold in the food court.*
STEAM STUDIO
Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math converge at STEAM Studio, an educational space at the River Arts Makers Place (RAMP) located less than a quarter mile from campus. STEAM Studio features equipment for 3D modeling and printing, as well as water jet, laser and plasma cutters, and includes multiple forms of metal fabrication equipment alongside a state-of-the-art woodworking facility and spaces designed to support cross-disciplinary learning. In 2017 and 2018, renowned conceptual artist Mel Chin worked with UNC Asheville students and faculty at STEAM Studio to create Wake, the largest sculpture ever to debut in New York City’s Times Square. STEAM Studio provides a place for Engineering and Art (two of UNC Asheville’s most popular majors) to converge.*
LOOKOUT OBSERVATORY
Lookout Observatory, also known as UNC Asheville’s window to the universe, invites members of the campus community and Asheville to explore the skies and learn about astronomy through guided stargazes. Many students in the Physics and Astronomy Department are employed part-time as docents at the observatory. These experienced and enthusiastic students operate the telescopes during public stargazes and school visits and communicate with thousands of interested members of the public each year.*
BEE CAMPUS & TREE CAMPUS UNC Asheville also has a hotel on campus...a Bee Hotel, that is. Our campus is passionate about pollinators and the vital role they play in maintaining ecosystems and providing us with fruits and vegetables. The Bee Hotel gives solitary bees a safe place to lay their eggs and over-winter, and was a collaboration with our Student Environmental Center, Office of Sustainability, the Asheville Design Center, and other community partners. Because of our focus on sustainability, UNC Asheville has been a certified Bee Campus USA since 2016 and was designated as a Tree Campus USA in 2018 by the Arbor Day Foundation for our forest management and conservation efforts.*
ASHEVILLE COMMUNITY
Many students first explore and connect to the Asheville Community through Pre-Rendezblue, Held in August every year before the beginning of classes, new students are invited to get a head start on their UNC Asheville education by delving into the many aspects of their new community. Pre-RendezBlue offers special-interest programs that showcase Asheville, including the vibrate music scene and successful arts organizations, literary history, social justice issues, and wellness in action. Participation in Pre-RendezBlue allows students to move in early to the residence halls and meet fellow students and staff who share their interests. First-year students also have the opportunity to build skills and connections across Asheville through their First-Year Seminar courses, FY 178 for short. These seminars introduce students to education in a liberal arts environment, assisting them in making the transition to UNC Asheville. FYS 178 is required for all incoming first-year students. To facilitate the first‐year college student’s transition to UNC Asheville, FYS 178 will address topics that are important to a “first year experience,” including time and money management, health, academic advising, effective use of college resources, and an appreciation of the rhythms of the academic year. Many UNC Asheville courses are also designated as service-learning courses, so students work directly with community partners as part of the course. Students completing six or more service learning credit hours, along with a Community Engaged Project and research paper, can apply to earn Community Engaged Scholar distinction at graduation.*
BLUE RIDGE MOUNTAINS Learning here expands well beyond the classroom walls. About 3,600 undergraduate students and about 330 full- and part-time faculty bring the campus alive with a genuine hunger to take on new challenges and opportunities through the more than 30 majors offered. Our university is situated in one of the most vibrant cities in the Southeast. Asheville offers an inviting downtown, exciting outdoor adventures, a thriving arts community and an array of eclectic dining opportunities. It’s also well-known for its assortment of historic architectural styles, including the nation’s largest private residence, the glamorous Biltmore Estate. Surrounded by the Blue Ridge Mountains, the boundaries of the city of Asheville merge into thousands of acres of National Forests, where students can hike, camp, kayak and rock climb. UNC Asheville offers an experience where every path leads to a new vista, where there’s room for every voice, and where the future is a frontier. 2021 UNC Asheville* Careers
