Kidney failure is a common complication of multiple myeloma. When first diagnosed, as many as 20-40% of patients with multiple myeloma will have some amount of kidney failure. Multiple myeloma can affect the kidney in several ways. It can affect the filter ( glomerulus ), the tubules (pipes), or the tissue of the kidney itself ( interstitium).

MYELOMA KIDNEY
Kidney failure is a common complication of multiple myeloma. When first diagnosed, as many as 20-40% of patients with multiple myeloma will have some amount of kidney failure. Multiple myeloma can affect the kidney in several ways. It can affect the filter ( glomerulus ), the tubules (pipes), or the tissue of the kidney itself ( interstitium).
MPGN | UNC KIDNEY CENTER What is MPGN? Membranoproliferative glomerulonephritis (MPGN) is a disease that affects the glomeruli, or filters, of the kidneys. Most instances of MPGN are caused by other diseases or disorders, including autoimmune diseases (such as systemic lupus erythematosis), chronic infections (like hepatitis B or more commonly hepatitis C), monoclonal immunoglobulin deposition diseases, and hereditary FOCAL SEGMENTAL GLOMERULOSCLEROSIS (FSGS) What is FSGS? FSGS stands for Focal Segmental Glomerulosclerosis. It is a relatively common form of kidney disease, especially in the US. Although there are several known risk factors, we don’t yet know why most people develop FSGS. In order to be diagnosed with FSGS, you must undergo a kidney biopsy. C1q Nephropathy is a kidney disease in which a large amount of protein is lost in the urine. It is one of the many diseases that can cause the Nephrotic Syndrome (see below). C1q is a normal protein of the immune system, and can be found floating in the circulation of mosthealthy people.

Anti-Glomerular Basement Membrane disease (anti-GBM disease) is a disease that occurs as a result of injury to small blood vessels (capillaries) in the kidneys and/or lungs. Autoantibodies are antibodies directed toward the body itself (rather than towards something foreign such as bacteria or viruses). In anti-GBM disease, these autoantibodies THROMBOTIC MICROANGIOPATHY (TMA) Thrombotic Microangiopathy (often known simply as TMA) is a rare but serious medical disease.
