March 17-18, 2021 tornado outbreak. The first March high risk since 2012 led to numerous tornadoes across the South and into the Southeast. Tornado Chasing Year in Chasing.TORNADO TRACKING
Research has found that supercell tornadoes generally require LCLs below 1,500 meters. Strong tornadoes are more common with LCLs below 1,000 meters, and probably more in the 600 to 800 meter zone or lower. LCLs are often lower in a storm environment than shown in a large-scale analyses like above. ( return to top) SPRING 2021 SEASONAL TORNADO OUTLOOK Spring 2021 seasonal tornado outlook. Tornadoes have been in short supply to start off the year. The ones that have occurred have already been impactful, with both January and February containing killer tornadoes. A relatively quiet start to the tornado year is not all that unusual, so that fact doesn’t mean much in itself. MARCH 17-18, 2021 TORNADO OUTBREAK March 17-18, 2021 tornado outbreak. March 17, 2021. March 23, 2021. Ian Livingston. (Katie Wheatley) A multi-day tornado event swept across parts of the mid-South and Southeast, focused on Mississippi and Alabama. Among at least 46 tornadoes in total over the two days, some strong twisters occurred and caused significant damage. MARCH 25, 2021 TORNADO OUTBREAK March 25, 2021. March 30, 2021. Katie Wheatley. For the second time in eight days, the Storm Prediction Center issued a “high risk” – level five of five – for parts of the mid-South, focused on Alabama and parts of Mississippi, Georgia and Tennessee. The result was another tornado outbreak. PEAK TORNADO SEASON IS OFTEN APRIL OR MAY, BUT THAT'S NOT Peak tornado season is here. While it is true that tornadoes can happen across the calendar, the spring and early summer is highly favored over other time. MAY 31, 1985: A TORNADO OUTBREAK OUT OF PLACE The May 31, 1985 outbreak is staggering in many ways in addition to its unusual geographic location. The count of violent F4/F5 tornadoes it produced outnumbers all but four tornado events since 1950, and its death toll exceeds everything else in the period between the two massive outbreaks of April, 1974 and April, 2011. Tornadoes sweep through the Pilger, NE area in June 2014. (Aaron Rigsby via Flickr) This is the first of a three part series that covers the basics on how to forecast tornadoes. The most recognized and well-known radar signature for tornadic supercells. This “hook-like” feature occurs when the strong counter-clockwise winds circling the mesocyclone (rotating updraft) are strong enough to wrap precipitation around the rain-free updraft area of the storm. U.S. TORNADO HISTORY: EARLY AMERICAN THOUGHT PRESENTED IN U.S. Tornado History: Early American thought presented in textbooks of the 1800s. Accounts of tornadoes or tornado-like winds have been noted throughout English history back to around 1,000 AD. In the present-day United States, the first sightings of tornadoes or waterspouts by English speakers date back to the late 1500s, during expeditionary 5 UNDERRATED TORNADO CHASING AREAS 5 underrated tornado chasing areas. March 7, 2016March 7, 2016 Quincy Vagell. When thinking about tornado chasing, places that generally come to mind are typically Oklahoma, Kansas and Nebraska, in the heart of “tornado alley.”. Knowing that tornadoes happen all around the country, there are other areas that often get overlooked. HERE’S WHERE TORNADOES TYPICALLY FORM IN JUNE ACROSS THE The high Plains, the central Plains, northern Plains and upper Midwest are particular hot spots. Where tornadoes form: January, February, March, April, May, June, July, August, September, October, November, December. Tornado averages for the month range from about 230-250 depending on the length and recentness of the averaging period. LONG-TRACK TORNADOES: HISTORICAL CLUES ABOUT INTENSITY I live about 20 miles west of Huntsville, Alabama, and I can attest to the fact that long-track, violent tornadoes are quite common here. Since 1974, 3 F5/EF5’s have hit my neighborhood. THE NATCHEZ, MISSISSIPPI TORNADO OF 1840 The date is May 7, the year is 1840. The place, Natchez, Mississippi. A bustling and booming river town along the Mississippi River, it’s 20 years after Mississippi joining the union and 20 years before the Civil War. 1840 along the Mississippi river is reminiscent of Mark Twain’s Adventures of Huckleberry Finn and Tom Sawyer. If you’re familiar with these tales, it is easier to imagine MONTHLY TORNADO AVERAGES BY STATE AND REGION The dominant tornado states in this region of Texas, Oklahoma and Kansas all see tornado averages peak in May. Texas is somewhat unique in the region, in that it has a tornado average in every month of the year. Both the western, and partly mountainous, states of New Mexico and Colorado see their tornado years peak in June on average.USTORNADOES.COM
