March 17-18, 2021 tornado outbreak. The first March high risk since 2012 led to numerous tornadoes across the South and into the Southeast. Tornado Chasing Year in Chasing.TORNADO TRACKING
Research has found that supercell tornadoes generally require LCLs below 1,500 meters. Strong tornadoes are more common with LCLs below 1,000 meters, and probably more in the 600 to 800 meter zone or lower. LCLs are often lower in a storm environment than shown in a large-scale analyses like above. ( return to top) SPRING 2021 SEASONAL TORNADO OUTLOOK Spring 2021 seasonal tornado outlook. Tornadoes have been in short supply to start off the year. The ones that have occurred have already been impactful, with both January and February containing killer tornadoes. A relatively quiet start to the tornado year is not all that unusual, so that fact doesn’t mean much in itself. MARCH 17-18, 2021 TORNADO OUTBREAK March 17-18, 2021 tornado outbreak. March 17, 2021. March 23, 2021. Ian Livingston. (Katie Wheatley) A multi-day tornado event swept across parts of the mid-South and Southeast, focused on Mississippi and Alabama. Among at least 46 tornadoes in total over the two days, some strong twisters occurred and caused significant damage. MARCH 25, 2021 TORNADO OUTBREAK March 25, 2021. March 30, 2021. Katie Wheatley. For the second time in eight days, the Storm Prediction Center issued a “high risk” – level five of five – for parts of the mid-South, focused on Alabama and parts of Mississippi, Georgia and Tennessee. The result was another tornado outbreak. PEAK TORNADO SEASON IS OFTEN APRIL OR MAY, BUT THAT'S NOT Peak tornado season is here. While it is true that tornadoes can happen across the calendar, the spring and early summer is highly favored over other time. Knowing that tornadoes happen all around the country, there are other areas that often get overlooked. THE NATCHEZ, MISSISSIPPI TORNADO OF 1840 The date is May 7, the year is 1840. The place, Natchez, Mississippi. A bustling and booming river town along the Mississippi River, it’s 20 years after Mississippi joining the union and 20 years before the Civil War. 1840 along the Mississippi river is reminiscent of Mark Twain’s Adventures of Huckleberry Finn and Tom Sawyer. MONTHLY TORNADO AVERAGES BY STATE AND REGION The dominant tornado states in this region of Texas, Oklahoma and Kansas all see tornado averages peak in May. Texas is somewhat unique in the region, in that it has a tornado average in every month of the year. Annual Tornadoes. In the United States, tornadoes are rated on a zero to five scale, with zero being the least intense and five being close to unfathomable in its destruction. Using today’s Enhanced Fujita Scale, EF0 and EF1 tornadoes are typically considered weak. EF2 and EF3 tornadoes are considered strong, and sometimes intense when it STORM CHASING IN 2021 Chase days of 2021. Thus far, there have been a number of tornadic or otherwise significant Plains-focused chase days. They are March 10, 12, 13, and 24. April is so far a bit sparse in the Plains, but as you’ll see below the wait for the 23rd was worth it, and more chasing occurred April 27.
