Measuring glaciers. The glaciers in Iceland have changed immensely in historic time, in particular in most recent decades, as the decrease amounts to approximately 0,3-0,5% every year. In an expedition twice a year, spring and autumn, scientists of the IMO keep track of the development of Hofsjökull and Drangajökull, measuring precipitationHAZARD ZONING
Older maps based on one month of meteorological data. Presented here are two maps showing concentric zones of increasing risk of dangerous SO 2 levels, the closer you get to the eruptive site. First a map of Iceland meant for the public (50% risk) and then a zoom in towards Holuhraun meant to inform authorized personnel (90% risk) and assistin
RE-EVALUATION NEEDED OF THE SIZE OF THE HAZARD AREA A summary from the Institute of Earth Sciences states that the average lava flow for the first 30 days of the eruption was 5.6 m3/s. Compared to most other Icelandic eruptions, the flow is remarkably low and relatively stable. The measurements on the lava now show that there has been some increase in the last 1-2 weeks. HARMONIE - NUMERICAL WEATHER PREDICTION MODEL HARMONIE is a non-hydrostatic convection-permitting NWP and is operated at 2.5 km horizontal resolution over a domain that covers Iceland and the surrounding seas. The development and maintainance of the model is a research cooperation of European meteorological institutes that was founded in 2005 when two research consortia joinedforces.

TÍÐARFAR Í MAÍ 2021 -2.6.2021
Maí var kaldur og þurr. Norðaustlægar áttir voru ríkjandi fram eftir mánuðinum, það var kalt og óvenju úrkomulítið um land allt. Gróður tók lítið við sér og sinueldar voru tíðir. Það tók svo að hlýna og rigna í lok mánaðar. Sólskinsstundir mældust óvenjumargar í Reykjavík.Lesa meira
HEILDARFLATARMÁL ÍSLENSKRA JÖKLA MINNKAÐI UM HÁTT Í 18% ÁSÍÐUSTU 130 ÁRUM
- 31.5.2021

21.5.2021
Í gær og í dag hefur gráblá móða legið yfir víða sunnan- og vestanlands. Þetta er gosmóða frá eldgosinu á Reykjanesi. Gosmóðan er samsett úr brennisteinsögnum (SO4) sem hafa orðið til vegna efnahvarfa gosmakkarins við súrefni andrúmsloftsins. Þessar brennisteinsagnir mælast ekki á SO2 gasmælum en sjást hins vegar sem gráblá móða þegar ákveðnum styrk er náð Lesa meira GÓÐ REYNSLA AF MÆLITÆKJUM SEM VAKTA OFANFLÓÐAHÆTTU Í SEYÐISFIRÐI OG ESKIFIRÐI- 21.5.2021

SAMVINNA MILLI LANDA OG STOFNANA LYKILLINN AÐ ÞVÍ AÐ TAKAST Á VIÐ ÁHRIF LOFTSLAGSBREYTINGA- 19.5.2021
Í dag var haldin ráðstefna á vegum Veðurstofu Íslands “2nd Arctic Met Summit” í tengslum við formennsku Íslands í Norðurskautsráðinu. Ráðstefnan bar yfirskriftina “Arctic Adaptation and Resilience – Building a Bridge Between Science and Community”. Lesa meira
