HOW DO I HELP MY LOVED ONE WHO IS SUFFERING FROM INTENSE It's important to just be there for them in a non-judgmental way. Try to engage them in activities that will benefit them mentally and physically, including exercise (going for walks or runs, assuming you're living together). Don't force them to talk about their feelings but do be ready to talk to them when they are. HOW CAN I KEEP MYSELF MENTALLY HEALTHY WHILE HAVING TO Feeling cutoff from friends and classmates can create a number of problems. The first thing you may already be utilizing is technology; FaceTime; SnapChat; Facebook etc. is an obvious way to maintain social contact. One of the main things that no work and no school impacts is structure. Both impose a structure on how and where we spend our time so the second thing you can do is impose CAN YOU SHARE SOME ACTIVITIES TO DO TO DISTRACT AND KEEP It stands for Activities: Involve yourself in activities that require a lot of concentration.What requires intense focus depends on the person, but some examples might include brain teasers, doing an online Zumba video, or playing a musical instrument. HOW DOES ONE KEEP WORKING WHEN THE WORLD NEEDS HELP? I CAN With so much uncertainty, it’s perfectly normal to feel distracted. So, the first thing that I would recommend is to make sure that you are practicing self-compassion. Instead of judging yourself for having a hard time being productive, recognize and acknowledge that we are in uncharted territory and that you are worried about the world. Then, take a deep breath, check in with yourself, and MY FAMILY AND I ARE HEALTHY, BUT I FEAR WE'RE DOOMED IF WE I agree with you that hearing all of the discussion about COVID-19 and the numbers of reported cases can be very scary. However, the vast majority of people who are dying from it are seniors, or individuals with preexisting conditions, which is a low percentage of the overall number of people who have contracted it. Given how you described you and your family, you would likely be okay, even if SHOULD MY TEENAGER SELF-QUARANTINE? IT WILL BE VERY Current guidelines are really encouraging us to be prudent about social distancing. While it may vary based on region (for example San Francisco has just put a 24 hour lockdown in place), the safest thing to do for the community is to avoid such gatherings. Although your teen(s) are likely healthy, if they unwittingly get the virus, they could spread it to others who are in more vulnerable ALL OF THE 'WHAT IFS' ARE KEEPING ME FROM BEING PRODUCTIVE It sounds like you’re feeling a bit stuck. To address this, I would start by scheduling the activities you are hoping to do on your calendar. Set a reminder to go off at the designated time, and commit to yourself to at least give them a try. HOW DO I MANAGE MY EXTREME ANXIETY ABOUT THIS VIRUS WHILE With all of the unpredictability in which we find ourselves, it is normal to feel some anxiety. Routines have been altered, our ability to socialize has been disrupted, and dealing with all of the change and uncertainty can be overwhelming. The media coverage of COVID-19 has been constant (and is probably exacerbated by the fact that not much else is going on right now - since we’re all at AS SOMEONE AT RISK, HOW DO I GO ABOUT MY LIFE WHILE IN Focus on what's in your control. You can practice strict social distancing and stay home. And you can focus on taking care of yourself and incorporating healthy habits, like exercise, healthy eating, lots of sleep, and maintaining your social connections digitally and otherwise.
