WHO MAINTAINS THE UK'S CANALS AND RIVERS? The UK’s canals and navigable rivers are managed by navigation authorities. UK navigation authorities are responsible for looking after the waterways including maintaining locks and bridges, dredging and flood management. If you want to use the waterways for activities like boating, paddling or fishing you may need a licence from the BUYING A BOAT FOR UK CANALS AND RIVERS Boat size. Canal and river navigations vary in size, so you’ll want to buy a craft suitable for all the waterways you want to use it on. Many locks on the narrow network can take boats up to 70 – 72 ft in length but some locks are shorter and there are some tight corners so we recommend a length of 58 – 60 ft (17.62m – 18.22m) for cruising the whole network. We are passionate about protecting and restoring Britain’s network of canals and navigable rivers for everyone to enjoy. The inland waterways are special outdoor places – sometimes tranquil and sometimes bustling – whose unique heritage and habitats are under threat from lack of funding and inconsiderate planning. We campaign locally and nationally for the waterways – supporting restorations, lobbying parliament, championing regeneration and raising waterways users concerns. We’re also prone to rolling up our sleeves and giving the waterways a bit of TLC. Our members are waterways-lovers from all walks of life who want to preserve and improve the network for future generations. WATERWAYS AFFECTED BY HS2 WE’RE CAMPAIGNING TO PROTECT CANALS AND RIVERS FROM THE DAMAGING EFFECTS OF HS2, ESPECIALLY WHERE THE TRANQUILLITY OF THE WATERWAYS ISUNDER THREAT.
