In January 2020 the Government reintroduced an Environment Bill for England, to replace the EU’s nature laws and “green watchdog” role, and to help nature to recover.THE LINK TEAM

From mind-bogglingly massive environmental efforts like the RSPB’s work to protect the UK SPEND £6 MILLION A YEAR TO SAVE £2.7 BILLION ON NATURE An estimated 42 new invasive species will establish in the UK by 2040 without Government action. This would cost our economy around £3.4 billion over the next 20 years. But with the investment of £6m p.a. this figure could be slashed by 80% to around £670 million. Saving around £135 million per year. REVIEW THE ENVIRONMENTAL COST OF HS2 Well firstly, the current Government review of HS2 lead by Douglas Oakervee must take into account the environmental costs of the scheme. Secondly, any works on the approved Phase 1 section that would involve ancient woodland clearances must be stopped until a go or no-go decision on HS2 has been made. In February 2021, Blueprint worked alongside Link's Chemical Taskforce to respond to the EAC Inquiry into Water Quality in Rivers. We raised concerns around the lack of progress in protecting and enhancing water quality, and outlined the need for strong and ambitious targets underpinned with sufficient funding, monitoring and enforcement. A BETTER DEAL FOR ANIMALS Better Deal for Animals. The Government has committed to using Brexit to make the UK ‘a world leader on animal welfare’. Over 50 of the leading animal protection groups in the UK have joined forces to campaign for a strong law that recognises animal sentience, and creates a duty for Government to consider animals’ welfare needs in its decision-making. In February 2021, Blueprint worked alongside Link's Chemical Taskforce to respond to the EAC Inquiry into Water Quality in Rivers. We raised concerns around the lack of progress in protecting and enhancing water quality, and outlined the need for strong and ambitious targets underpinned with sufficient funding, monitoring and enforcement. A BETTER DEAL FOR ANIMALS Better Deal for Animals. The Government has committed to using Brexit to make the UK ‘a world leader on animal welfare’. Over 50 of the leading animal protection groups in the UK have joined forces to campaign for a strong law that recognises animal sentience, and creates a duty for Government to consider animals’ welfare needs in its decision-making. WELCOME WORLD OCEAN DAY ACTION TO PROTECT OUR MOST 8 June 2021. Welcoming the announcement that the Government intends to pilot the Highly Protected Marine Areas (HPMAs) recommended in the Benyon Review, Wildlife and Countryside Link’s Marine Group Co-Chair Gareth Cunningham said: “Our seas are struggling from pollution, over-use and under protection, with more than 90% of UK seagrass lost and British seabird numbers declining by up to 70%. THE THREE ESSENTIAL FEATURES OF A STATE OF NATURE TARGET June 2021. The Government has agreed to introduce “a new world-leading target on species abundance for 2030 aimed at halting species decline”. The target, promised in response to the State of Nature campaign, is intended to give domestic effect to the G7 ambition to “bend the curve of biodiversity loss by 2030”.. A BETTER DEAL FOR ANIMALS Better Deal for Animals. The Government has committed to using Brexit to make the UK ‘a world leader on animal welfare’. Over 50 of the leading animal protection groups in the UK have joined forces to campaign for a strong law that recognises animal sentience, and creates a duty for Government to consider animals’ welfare needs in its decision-making.ENVIRONMENT BILL
Environment Bill. The UK Government has said it will “make ours the first generation to leave the natural environment in a better state than we found it.”. In January 2020 the Government reintroduced an Environment Bill for England, to replace the EU’s nature laws and “green watchdog” role, and to help nature to recover.BLUEPRINT FOR WATER
In February 2021, Blueprint worked alongside Link's Chemical Taskforce to respond to the EAC Inquiry into Water Quality in Rivers. We raised concerns around the lack of progress in protecting and enhancing water quality, and outlined the need for strong and ambitious targets underpinned with sufficient funding, monitoring and enforcement.THE LINK TEAM

The Government has agreed to introduce “a new world-leading target on species abundance for 2030 aimed at halting species decline”. The target, promised in response to the State of Nature campaign, is intended to give domestic effect to the G7 ambition to “bend the curve of biodiversity loss by 2030”.. STATE OF NATURE CAMPAIGN State of Nature Campaign. We need urgent action from the Government to protect nature. The Prime Minister has called on world leaders to agree to turn round nature’s decline by 2030. In just a few months, Governments will come together to try to agree a global target to 'GOODBYE BYCATCH' CAMPAIGN April 2021. In February my colleague Sarah Dolman wrote about the launch of the Goodbye Bycatch campaign..
