WE ARE NOT NUMBERS! || STORIES by Saja Jaber Al-Moghair The Palestinian says, “Do not let the olive branch fall from my hand.” WE ARE NOT NUMBERS! || THOUGHTS THAT RISE UP AS ISRAELI The destroyed al-Hanadi Tower. WE ARE NOT NUMBERS! || THEY ARE NOT NUMBERS They are not numbers. Originally I had planned to write about our Palestinian rituals in Eid el-fitr, a holy occasion in which we share happiness, make ka’ak and buy new clothes, especially for the children. But things turned into a grim form of topsy-turvy as the barbaric Israeli occupation began attacking Gaza on WE ARE NOT NUMBERS! || A PALESTINIAN MEETS PALESTINE A Palestinian meets Palestine. The Dome of the Rock behind me. Wandering the alleyways of Hebron’s streets, specifically the neighborhood of Ras al-Joura, I saw a different side of life. In the evening, the houses lit up like stars. The constant power outages in Gaza drapes our streets in WE ARE NOT NUMBERS! || CALENDAR OF FREEDOM This story has been woven with threads of hope, though that hope is still locked inside a box. The Dome of the Rock behind me. Wandering the alleyways of Hebron’s streets, specifically the neighborhood of Ras al-Joura, I saw a different side of life. WE ARE NOT NUMBERS! || COVID DIARIES: THREE NIGHTMARES AND COVID diaries: three nightmares and now a fourth. It’s the fourth day of the lockdown imposed on Gaza due to the COVID-19 outbreak that has finally arrived. An annoying Israeli drone is hovering high in the sky, it’s bee-like zzzzz invading my brain. Israel’s ban on fuel imports has reduced our electricity to four hours a day, sometimes WE ARE NOT NUMBERS! || COVID-19 CAUSES ANTI-PALESTINIAN COVID-19 causes anti-Palestinian backlash in Israel. Ever since the announcement of the Palestinian Ministry of Health on March 6 that a Bethlehem resident had become the first person in the West Bank to be identified as carrying the novel coronavirus, there have been massive ripple effects. And they have particularly impacted the estimated WE ARE NOT NUMBERS! || CALENDAR OF FREEDOM This story has been woven with threads of hope, though that hope is still locked inside a box. This old man has somehow managed to get hold of that hope, by creating a beautiful painting called the calendar of freedom, which makes the days quickly fall away—the days that separate those imprisoned inside the Israeli prisons and those outside—their families, sons and lovers.
