OVERVIEW - WEEDS AUSTRALIA Of the more than 28,000 plant species introduced into Australia from all over the world, approximately 2,700 have formed self-supporting populations in the natural environment.ABOUT THIS SITE
Creation of Weeds Australia. This site is a deliverable of the Centre for Invasive Species Solutions (CISS) project Po1-E-008 ‘Development of National Invasive Species Management’ digital information platform’ led by Dr Ian McDonald with major support from Dr Rachel Melland, who facilitated the stakeholder workshops, surveys and focus groups to help understand user needs and requirements. REPORT - WEEDS AUSTRALIA Who is responsible for managing weeds? Collective action may be necessary where the problem is beyond the capacity of the individual landholder or land manager to address. MONITOR - WEEDS AUSTRALIA The Atlas of Living Australia (ALA) is a collaborative, digital, open infrastructure that pulls together Australian biodiversity data from multiple sources, making it accessible and reusable. INTEGRATED WEED MANAGEMENT Physical control is the removal of weeds by physical or mechanical means, such as mowing, grazing, mulching, tilling, burning or by hand. The method used often depends on the area of weeds to be managed, what the land is used for, physical characteristics and the value of theland.
HOW CAN YOU HELP STOP THE SPREAD? It’s common for hobby farms to be located in peri-urban areas, that is, on the fringes of our cities. The physical location of such properties can pose challenges for owners when it comes to managing the spread of invasive plants from gardens to surrounding habitats. NATIONAL - WEEDS AUSTRALIA The Atlas of Living Australia (ALA) is a collaborative, digital, open infrastructure that pulls together Australian biodiversity data from multiple sources, making it accessible and reusable. PREVENTING WEED INFESTATIONS IN AUSTRALIA The first step in weed prevention, and the most cost-effective means of managing weeds, is to prevent potential weeds entering Australia. More than 70% of plants now considered to be weeds in Australia were intentionally imported for garden or agricultural use.
