This enthusiasm for this quilting fad continued until about 1910. NATIVE AMERICAN QUILTING FROM SEMINOLE PATCHWORK TO HOPI Seminole quilting originated from the Seminole patchwork used for clothing by these southeastern Native Americans. In the late 1800s it was a long trip from the Everglades to trade for cotton cloth so women began sewing strips made from the fabric left on the end UNDERGROUND RAILROAD/JACOB'S LADDER QUILT PATTERN When Marie Webster wrote the first known book on quilting in 1915 she referred to the Jacob's Ladder pattern in this way, "The bold and rather heavy design known as 'Jacobs Ladder' is a good example of a pieced quilt."She showed a black and white picture of this pattern with the caption, "One of the most striking quilts having Biblical names." 2 Biblical names were often used for quilts in a DOUBLE WEDDING RING QUILT PATTERN: A HISTORY OF ROMANCE A quilt made much like the Double Wedding Ring is in the Shelburne Museum, dated 1825-50. This quilt is titled Pincushion; see an example to the right. 2 But the actual Double Wedding Ring pattern appears to have been rarely used until the 1920s. Part of the difficulty in tracing the earlier use of this pattern is the fact that over time it was made under around 40 different names. QUILT PATTERN HISTORY: A QUEST FOR THEIR STORIES Although quilt publications did help standardize many patterns sorting it all out was a tremendous job. Barbara Brackman set out to do just that in her book Encyclopedia of Pieced Quilt Patterns which includes drawings of over 4,000 quilt blocks with their names. She used only quilt patterns and names that have been documented in magazines AFRICAN AMERICAN QUILTING FROM SLAVERY TO THE PRESENT The Pine Cone or Pine Burr quilt is a three dimensional quilt made of overlapping triangles. Although a few patterns were published in early America and more by the late 1800s women of the 19th and the early 20th centuries had another way to share and remember favorite block patterns. QUILTS MADE DURING THE CIVIL WAR BETWEEN THE STATES Eventually money had to be raised to buy the fabric to make soldiers' bedding as existing materials were used up. By the end of the war it is estimated that over 250,000 quilts and comforts had been made for Union soldiers. Southern Women Made Clothing and Blankets From Almost Nothing.
