CROW MURAL BY SKYE WALKERJune 3, 2021

It is a fact that if my sister had not needed to visit the local Post Office during our recent stay in the funky little desert town of Moab, Utah, then I would not have had the good fortune to discover this fantastic mural of a BLACK CROW poking its head through a sea of cactus. The unfortunate presence of two trash bins is owed to the fact that the mural faces an alley between the Post Office and the town’sMain Street.
Entitled _KEEPER OF THE GARAGE_, the 40ft x 12ft x 28ft scene adorns the back of the local coffee shop MOAB GARAGE. The work dates back to OCTOBER 2019 and is one of two town murals by artist SKYE WALKER from a commission by the MOAB ARTScouncil.

Design and Innovation EYE ON DESIGN: SAM MALOOF, _CRADLE CABINET_June 2, 2021

“When you’re working, there’s a communion between the object-maker and the material, it transcends into something much greater,” said furniture designer and woodworker SAM MALOOF. “When you make something and someone likes it, enjoys it and all, you’re paid tenfold.” _CRADLE CABINET_, DETAIL MALOOF was one of the United States’ preeminent woodworkers during the second half of the twentieth century. In 1966, PAUL J. SMITH, Director of the MUSEUM OF ARTS AND DESIGN (MAD), invited Maloof to show his _CRADLE CABINET_ in a thematic exhibition, _THE BED_. A masterpiece of woodworking skill and sensitivity, the cabinet is also innovative in its design, combining all of the functional needs of a newborn’s nursery into a single piece of furniture.INSTALLATION VIEW

ASTEROID LANDED SOFTLY, SALT LAKE CITYJune 1, 2021
rezpect Leave a commentALL PHOTOS BY GAIL
If you don’t know already, it will soon became apparent from my posts that I was recently traveling _(on vacation)_ in the beautiful state of Utah! Our first stop on a ten-day road trip was Salt Lake City, where I was able to see this ‘floating boulder,’ entitled _ASTEROID LANDED SOFTLY_ (1994) by Japanese artist KAZUO MATSUBAYAHSI, from my window at the Marriott hotel! Aside from being a stunning public landmark, _ASTEROID LANDED SOFTLY _is a working sundial that also suggests the image of Southern Utah’s landscape. The sundial works through a slit in the tower (seen in the above photo) as a beam of sunlight is cast on the plazafloor.
The mirrored column supporting the pinkish-brown rock also beautifully reflects the changing faces of the surrounding office buildings and fluctuating weather patterns to offer a limitless number of perspectives that can be captured in photos. I did not realize when I took this particular photo that I had also captured a restingpigeon!
The above photo was taken a bit later in the day, so there’s a complete shadow on the face of the sundial. You can read more about this beautiful and functional work of public art at THIS LINK!

MODERN ART MONDAY PRESENTS: _JOHN_ BY CHUCK CLOSEMay 31, 2021
rezpect Leave a commentPHOTO BY GAIL
CHUCK CLOSE is known as much for his detailed representation of the human face as he is for his subsequent deconstruction of it. Close uses head-on portraits as his templates, exploring portraiture and his subjects through a variety of drawing and painterly techniques, as well as through printmaking, tapestry and photography. _JOHN_ (1971–72) one of Close’s earliest paintings, is described as photo-realist. Indeed, Close refers to photographs to create his artworks, employing their inconsistencies perspective as much as their verisimilitude. Here, the sharp detail of the rim of the subject’s glasses contrasts with the blurred soft focus of his shoulders and the back of his hair, as it likely did in the original photograph. But instead of using mechanical means to transfer his images onto canvas, Close works entirely from sight to achieve the intensely animate detail, sectioning off the reference photographs into grids and transferring each piece by hand onto is monumental canvases, _PHOTOGRAPHED AT THE BROAD IN LOS ANGELES, CA. _SHARE THIS:

MUST SEE ART: JULIE MEHRETU AT THE WHITNEY MUSEUMMay 30, 2021

> A post shared by Gail Worley (@worleygigdotcom)>
Memorial Day weekend is literally a washout here in Manhattan, but I managed to save the day on Saturday by taking a trip to the Whitney Museum to see the JULIE MEHRETU exhibit, which is just mind blowing! Mehretu is an Ethiopian-born, New York-based abstract painter whose monumental canvases create layered worlds and vortexes of energy that must absolutely be experienced in person to really lose yourself in their surreal presence. Two Thumbs way up on this one. Be sure to follow me on Instagram by clicking on the image above so that you don’t miss out on any of my exciting weekend art adventures!SHARE THIS:
