The grouping, one of the Germans’ famous “wolf packs,” was called Pfadfinder and the impact of that mission brought World War II far too close to Nantucket for comfort. NATURE’S LIVING LIGHT SHOW, BIOLUMINESCENCE Bioluminescence is a subset of chemiluminescence, where the light-producing chemical reaction occurs inside an organism. At least two chemicals are required to create this light. The one which produces the light is generically called a “luciferin” and the one that drives or catalyzes the reaction is called a “luciferase.”. SCALLOP SHELL CRAFT IDEAS SCALLOP SHELL LIGHTS. Look for shells roughly the same size. Once the shells are cleaned, buy a strand of white LED Christmas lights. Remember to test the lights before you use them. Pair two similar sized shells and hot glue them together with the light in the middle, forming the shape of a whole scallop. When the lights are plugged in,the

FRIEND OR FOE? EASTERN TENT CATERPILLAR An old wives tale persists that Eastern Tent Caterpillar are only edible to Cuckoos and poisonous to other birds. While not as palatable as other species, research from the University of Michigan shows that Eastern Tent Caterpillar are eaten by over 60 species of birds, many of which call Nantucket home (including orioles, jays, chickadees and LPGA LEGENDS TOUR BENEFIT THIS WEEKEND The Legends of the LPGA are coming to Nantucket Island for the inaugural Nantucket Golf Weekend September 9 to 11 to benefit Nantucket Cottage Hospital. Some are plain, beautiful in their simplicity and deeply colored by age. Others are elaborately constructed and adorned with carvings of ivory and ebony, scrimshaw, gold, and gems.
