This isn’t horrible, but those two lines of boilerplate at the start of the loopare bit annoying
BINDING TO THE CURRENT ITEM IN WPF Ian Griffiths' Weblog. When working with collection-like data sources in WPF, you can read properties of the selected item by writing your binding expressions as though there were only DEFAULT TEMPLATES IN WPF WHAT EXACTLY IS AN UNMANAGED RESOURCE? Ian Griffiths' Weblog. Given the distinction .NET draws between managed and unmanaged code, it is tempting to think that unmanaged resources are the kinds of things you tend to deal with in unmanagedcode.
GENERATING PERMUTATIONS WITH C# ITERATORS Jason Whittington isn't the only person who can do bizarre and pointless stuff with C# iterators.. On a mailing list I frequent, Tim Tabor asked: "What handy tool will enumerate all permutations, of, say, a list of 10 doubles taken five at a time?" MODIFYING A POSTSCRIPT FILE TO PRINT DUPLEX (DOUBLE SIDED) From time to time, I come across PostScript (.ps) files that I want to read. I also have a printer that understands PostScript. And I often like to read stuff in print rather than on screen. LEARNING POWERSHELL: FINDSTR EQUIVALENT Ian Griffiths' Weblog. I've been using Windows PowerShell as my main command prompt now for a while. Good command prompt skills are extremely useful, so I wanted to learn PowerShell because it's a profound improvement over any command line technology I've seenbefore.
WPF RADIOBUTTON GROUPNAME SCOPE I recently had an email from a Pluralsight On-Demand! customer about a problem with WPF’s RadioButton. (Yes, the italics and the exclamation mark are part of the brand, apparently) I thought I’d post my response here, because it might be useful to a wider audience. INTERACT SOFTWARE LTD. GRADIENT FILL MIDPOINTS AND WPF WPF offers a couple of gradient fill types. LinearGradientBrush is for gradients that follow a straight line, and RadialGradientBrush is for gradients that run from a point to an elliptical boundary.. Both fill types support only linear interpolation of fill colours. This makes them more limited than the equivalent fills in Adobe Illustrator. FILLING LISTVIEW COLUMNS IN WPF WPF’s ListView control left-aligns the content of columns by default. This can lead to slightly surprising results when you use a TextBox in one of the columns:. What’s happening here is that the TextBox is being sized to content. (That’s what happens if you left-align an element in WPF.) LISTVIEW COLUMN MARGIN In my previous post, I showed how to set the alignment on a ListView column in order to make the column contents stretch to fill the available width.I also observed that it’s tricky to get rid of the margins to the left and right of the contents of each column. ASYNC, AWAIT, AND YIELD RETURN Sooner or later, it seems to occur to a lot of C# developers to try something like this: // NOTE: doesn't work! public async Task < IEnumerable < string >> GetItemsAsync() {string item1 = await GetSomething Async (); yield return item1; string item2 = await GetSomethingElse Async (); yield return item2;} This basic idea showed up recently in a question on Stack Overflow.I answered it, but CREATING IMAGES FROM RAW PIXEL DATA IN WPF One of the restrictions I've often run into with GDI+ is that it makes life awkward if you want to work with raw pixel values. (E.g., for generating images from scratch or performing image processing.) DESIGNING A WPF TIMELINE CONTROL PART 1: STRUCTURE For a change, I’m involved in an endeavour I can blog about. I’m working with Brian Randell, Matthew Adams, and Felix Corke on a project that involves building a kind of timeline control. This blog describes the thinking behind the control’s structure—WPF controls tend to end up looking very different from their equivalents in anything based on classic Win32 UI underpinnings such as MONITOR.TRYENTER, LOCK, USING, AND DEADLOCK I have issues with the lock keyword in C#. It is designed to make writing thread-safe code easier, but I never use it in production code. In case you're not familiar with it, lock is just shorthand - the following code: lock (obj) { do something with shared state . is expanded by the compiler into this: INTERACT SOFTWARE LTD. DECONSTRUCTING KEYVALUEPAIR Deconstruction won’t work for KeyValuePair by default with any of the frameworks listed because right now, the necessary Deconstruct method has only been shipped with .NET Core 2.0. We can demonstrate that the deconstruction language feature works in some cases on .NET 4.7.1 by mapping the dictionary into a tuple first, and you can BINDING TO THE CURRENT ITEM IN WPF Property= " {Binding /Name} ". Ideally, WPF would provide something like an attachable RadioButton.IsGroupNameScope property that we could set to limit the scope of our names, just like we can with grid size groups. Unfortunately, group names are always scoped to the containing root visual, which is usually your window DEFAULT TEMPLATES IN WPF Ian Griffiths' Weblog. Someone recently asked me how WPF controls get their default templates. If you create a built-in control such as Button, its Template property will automatically be set to a ControlTemplate that defines the appropriate appearance for that control. Most controls look different in the various Windows themes, so the exact template you get depends on which theme is HOW TO STOP A THREAD IN .NET (AND WHY THREAD.ABORT IS EVIL) Have a volatile bool field that is visible both to your worker thread and your UI thread. If the user clicks cancel, set this flag. Meanwhile, on your worker thread, test the flag from time to time. If you see it get set, stop what you're doing. The issue most people initially have with this approach is that it doesn't forcibly stop thethread
C# 3.0 LAMBDAS AND TYPE INFERENCE Towards the end he showed a slightly irritating problem in C# 3.0. He wanted to write this: var transformer = x => new { Original = x, Normalized = x.ToLower () }; However, the C# compiler complains because it doesn’t have enough information to infer the type of the transformer variable. The problem it reports is “ Cannot assignlambda
