Aquatic environments offer much to moose. Water brings coolness. In the water, moose reduce their respiration rate by almost 30%, and their overall energy expenditure by about 10%. Water also brings nutrition. Of all the food that moose consume, aquatic plants are the richest in protein and sodium. Water also brings safety. INSIGHTS | THE WOLVES AND MOOSE OF ISLE ROYALE Insights. The wolves and moose of Isle Royale occasionally offer intimate glimpses into the experiences of their lives. They can also inspire a sense of who we are and what our relationship with nature should be. This is the place to share in these simple observations, narratives, visual impressions, and other insights from nature.EDUCATIONAL VIDEOS
Presentation #8: The mechanisms of predation, part 1(67 mins) Learn about how much of our knowledge about predation is rooted in ecological theory and concepts like kill rate, predation rate, functional response, numerical response, and more. Learn what the wolves and moose of Isle Royale teach us about these theories ofpredation.
MINONGERS | THE WOLVES AND MOOSE OF ISLE ROYALE The artist: Gendron Jensen. Gendron Jensen's life is devoted to sharing the beauty and mystery of bones through his drawings. To learn more about Gendron Jensen and his art, visit his webpage, where you can also purchase a limited edition copy of Minongers.. In February 2003, Gendron joined our research team during that year’s winterfield season.

All About Wolves. Wolves develop from pups at an incredible rate. Pups are born, in late April, after just a two-month pregnancy. They are born deaf, blind, and weigh no more than a can of soda pop. At this time, pups can do basically just one thing – suckle their mother’s milk. Within a month, pups can hear and see, weigh ten pounds, andDISCOVERIES

THE PLACE | THE WOLVES AND MOOSE OF ISLE ROYALE The Place. Isle Royale is a remote wilderness island, in one of the planet’s most unforgiving lakes, Lake Superior, North America. Isle Royale was born of fire and smoke, from lava that poured from a crack in the earth’s crust a billion years ago. She was shaped of ice and water, from glaciers that piled rich sediments in the south and THE PEOPLE | THE WOLVES AND MOOSE OF ISLE ROYALE Rolf Peterson began leading the wolf moose project in the early 1970s. He is a world authority on wolves and moose. After retiring as a professor on 2006, he began to devote even more time to the wolf-moose project, and now spends more time on Isle Royale than on the mainland. THE POPULATION BIOLOGY OF ISLE ROYALE WOLVES AND MOOSE: AN The wolves and moose of Isle Royale have been studied for more than five decades. This research represents the longest continuous study of any predator-prey system in the world. WHY DON'T WOLVES EAT ALL THAT THEY KILL? The first possibility is that partial-prey consumption is a simple physiological constraint. That is, an animal doesn’t eat all that it’s killed because it is full. It cannot digest all that it has captured. An alternative possibility is that partial-prey consumption is an optimal foraging strategy—an intricate, albeitcounterintuitive

A Small, Safe Haven. It was a crisp cold morning in early June 2006. I was awakened to the sound of moose grunts outside the yurt, where we live. My alarm had not gone off, so it had to be sometime before 6am. I was not prepared (mentally or logistically) to make observations on FACEBOOK AND INSTAGRAM Greetings, Friends. Typically, wolves consume impressive portions of their prey, eating all but the rumen contents, larger bones, and some hair. They routinely eat what you and I would not dream of eating – the stomach muscles, tendons, marrow, bones, hair and hide.ALL ABOUT MOOSE
