One of the things that makes Islington unique is our vibrant voluntary sector, which is supported by a hidden army of volunteers. There are lots of opportunities to get involved and give something back to the community – from befriending to mentoring and community gardening, there is something for everyone.ISLINGTON LIFE
Islington is the third smallest local authority in the capital, covering an area of just over six square miles. In 2020 the borough's population is estimated to be approximately 243,000 people.ISLINGTON LIFE
Islington Council’s Black History Working group is excited to bring you a range of events all about Black history, culture, literature, life and learning, packed with opportunities toISLINGTON LIFE
To help keep our traders, shoppers and community safe we took the difficult decision to close all street markets in Islington until further notice on 3 April. A small number of market stall traders will be able to reopen for business from 9 May, to test whether new guidelines on social distancing can keep shoppers and workers safe. We hope to have a phased reopening of our markets as soon asISLINGTON LIFE
By 1861 there were approximately 700 Italians living in densely-populated streets of Clerkenwell and Holborn. The overcrowding was exacerbated in 1880s with a second wave of migration, comprising of predominantly poorer, younger Italians from central and southern parts of the country.ISLINGTON LIFE

According to one early writer, it was a savage place, a forest “full of the lairs of wild beasts”, where bears and wild bulls roamed.ISLINGTON LIFE

The Irish in Islington. 25. May. The arrival of the Irish into Islington began in the 1700s, mainly as agricultural labourers. The early part of the 19th Century attracted large numbers of Irish migrants, drawn by London’s rapid economic growth. This increased when many from Ireland fled the effects of the Irish potato famineduring the 1840s.

Islington Grandmentors is a volunteer mentoring programme which trains and supervises volunteers who are over the age of 50 to provide support, guidance and advice to young people leaving the care system. A new cafe has opened at St Andrew’s Church, in Thornhill Square, for people with dementia and their families. Because of the current COVID-19 threat, the cafe is currently a virtual one that you can visit via its Facebook page.But once back up and running, it will be held on the third Saturday of the month from 10am-1pm.. St Luke’s Hospital for Lunatics was established on Old Street in 1786-87. The building had a magnificent frontage of clamp brick, 500 feet (150 m) long. The Finsbury Health Centre was opened in October 1938 and was hailed as setting “new standards in modernist architecture and in public health in Britain” *. The building was commissioned by Finsbury Council, before the local authority merged with Islington Council later in the century.ISLINGTONLIFE
