IBM BRINGS FLEXIBLE UTILITY PRICING TO PRIVATE POWER SYSTEMS May 6, 2020 Timothy Prickett Morgan A lot of people, including us, focus on the technologies that go into private, on-premises cloudy infrastructure and how that is almost always distinct from compute, storage, and networking technologies based on the same raw compute – Intel Xeon, AMD Epyc, or IBM Power, pick one – available on the public cloud. But there is an equally important gap between private and public clouds, and that is the pricing methodology for the two. IBM’s Cognitive Systems division, which controls the Power Systems platform, wants to close that pricing gap by adopting the same flexible, utility-style pricing for on-premises Power Systems …Read more

ILEDITOR 2 GIVES IBM I SHOPS A NEW DEVELOPMENT OPTION May 6, 2020 Alex Woodie Liam Allan recently unveiled ILEditor 2, a new integrated development environment (IDE) for IBM i. For many years, members of the IBM i community have expressed frustration by the high price, size, and
performance of Rational Developer for i (RDi), which is IBM ’s flagship development tool for the IBM i community. While the IDE’s performance has improved in recent years, members of the community still bemoan the …Read more

IBM I PTF GUIDE, VOLUME 22, NUMBER 18 May 6, 2020 Doug Bidwell Hello good people of IBM i Land. This week, there are updates for Rational Developer for i Version 9.6.0.8, for all releases of IBM i. This has been an on again/off again dance with IBM, and we are not sure why Big Blue posted it a few weeks ago, then unposted it, and then reposted it. HAVING SECOND THOUGHTS ABOUT NEW POWER SYSTEMS IRON? May 4, 2020 Timothy Prickett Morgan Back in the day, when midrange computers cost somewhat more than they do today (without adjusting for inflation, mind you) and the amount of processing, memory, storage, and networking capacity of the boxes was absolutely miniscule compared to what we can buy today (but sufficient to the task), customers looking to add more AS/400 or iSeries capacity to their datacenter didn’t have to shop around a current _N_ generation or _N-1_ generation machine, but they could also look into the secondhand market for used _N-1_, _N-2_, and even _N-3_ generation machines and try to buy capacity on the …Read more

SHARING TAPE LIBRARIES ACROSS PARTITIONS WITHOUT VIOS May 4, 2020 Alex Woodie IBM i shops have a love-hate relationship when it comes to the Virtual I/O Server, or VIOS. With the latest IBM i Technology Refresh, IBM is giving the anti-VIOS group a feature they have been requesting: the capability to easily share a tape library among multiple logical partitions, or LPARs without involving VIOS, SANs, or multipleadapters.
IBM is calling the new feature “IBM i Virtualization for Tape Libraries,” and it’s based on RFE (request for enhancement) number 127631. While the words “tape libraries” and “virtualization” are in there, this is not a virtual tape library (VTL) solution. That already …Read more

BIG BLUE MAKES MOVES TO MAINSTREAM DB2 MIRROR May 4, 2020 Timothy Prickett Morgan When IBM brought out its active-active Db2 for i database clustering extensions, called Db2 Mirror appropriately enough, almost exactly a year ago to improve the resiliency of databases and therefore the applications that run atop them on the IBM i platform, we had a few asks. As part of the April Technology Refresh announcements for IBM i 7.3 and 7.4, some of those asks are answered and it looks like another one might be in the works. The two most important things that we asked for are related, and it is all about making Db2 Mirror available and affordable for …Read more

AS I SEE IT: WHEN THE SECOND SHOE DROPPED May 4, 2020 Victor Rozek I got tested today. Four ordinary words infused with extraordinary dread. They’ve now become part of a new language of fear, along with “cough,” “fever,” and “difficulty breathing.” A persistent sore throat and a slight fever that flared briefly a few days later, was enough to concern my doctor. She told me to come in the same day I called to complain about my throat and did a drive-by swabbing. When I arrived, she was waiting by the curb, helmeted, gloved, and gowned, like something out of Andromeda Strain. Another masked doctor stood behind her at a safe distance counting …Read more

SUNDRY SYSTEMS SOFTWARE AND COD POWER SYSTEMS ANNOUNCEMENTS May 4, 2020 Timothy Prickett Morgan There is a steady drumbeat of new stuff that always comes out of IBM for the Power Systems hardware platform, and sometimes it is Big Blue banging on the big kettle drum and sometimes it is using the brushes on the little snare drum. WHAT’S NEW IN OPEN SOURCE WITH THE LATEST TRS April 27, 2020 Alex Woodie New technology is exciting. IBM I BEFORE AND AFTER THE PANDEMIC April 27, 2020 Timothy Prickett Morgan _(Sponsored Content) _There is a lot of uncertainty in the world right now, both medically and economically, thanks to the coronavirus pandemic that has spread around the globe. I showed how to call an RPG program from a Python script passing single string parameters as input and output. In the second part of this series, I’ll make the process a little more robust by passing a data structure to the RPG program. The first part of the Python script (shown in the first piece of code below) imports the _itoolkit_ modules and assigns them to local names. Next, I set up the first command that adds a library list entry to where the RPG object resides. from itoolkit import…

POWER SYSTEMS HIT BY THE PANDEMIC IN Q1 2020 April 27, 2020 Timothy Prickett Morgan Thirteen weeks ago, when IBM reported its financial results for the fourth quarter of 2019, we told you that the Power9 platform was entering the long tail, that part of the cycle of the this generation of Power Systems machines where the revenue would dwindle off between that time and when the Power10 servers launch sometime in 2021. That tail perhaps just got a little longer and skinnier thanks to the coronavirus pandemic. IBM doesn’t talk very much about the specifics of revenues and profits for the Power Systems line any more, just like it stopped talking about the iSeries …Read more

Last week, we were asking for Big Blue to wake up and provide a stimulus package for its Power Systems business in general and its IBM i business in particular. And one of the things we asked for – an amnesty canceling so-called after license charges for Software Maintenance for IBM i and AIX platforms was actually quietly announced to business partners – unexpectedly at that – on April 13, the same day our essay ran and three days after we wrote it. GURU: A SIMPLE, EFFECTIVE WAY TO COMPARE DATA USING SQL April 20, 2020 Ted Holt One thing I have learned over the years is that no matter how much technology changes, people always ask the same questions like: “Why does the computer say we have 50 widgets when we only have 45?” and “Can you tell me who changed the due date of order number 12345?” and “How do sales of widgets this year compare to the same time last year?” It is the last of these that I wish to address today.
