The new voluntary guidelines are supported with increased knowledge and the emergence of a wide range of new challenges and opportunities for tropical forest management. OBJECTIVES | ITTO | THE INTERNATIONAL TROPICAL TIMBER ITTO's objectives. ITTO's objectives, as set out in the ITTA, 2006, are: To provide an effective framework for consultation, international cooperation and policy development among all members with regard to all relevant aspects of the world timber economy; To provide a forum for consultation to promote non-discriminatory timber trade practices; TIMBER TRADE AND MARKETS ITTO’s online statistical database provides time-series data (beginning in 1990) for 83 countries—including all ITTO producer and consumer member countries—on the production and trade of 16 primary timber products, such as logs, sawnwood, veneer and plywood. ANNUAL REPORTS
2013 Annual Report. 2013 was the first year in which ITTO operated under the modalities established by the ITTA, 2006. We resumed publication of two flagships, the Tropical Forest Update and the Tropical Timber Market Report, thus providing valuable information to our stakeholders on sustainable forest management and the tropicaltimber trade.
FOREST LANDSCAPE RESTORATION Forest landscape restoration is a vehicle for delivering on internationally agreed commitments on forests, biodiversity, climate change and desertification. Among other things, it contributes to Sustainable Development Goals 1 (“no poverty”), 6 (“clean water and sanitation”) and 15 (“life on land”). In cooperation withthe Centre
CRITERIA AND INDICATORS Photo: FORDA. ITTO pioneered the development of criteria and indicators (C&I) for the sustainable management of natural tropical forests in the early 1990s and has continued to provide leadership in their review, improvement and implementation. C&I are tools for defining, assessing and monitoring progress towards sustainable forestmanagement.

It entered into force on 7 December 2011, superseding the International Tropical Timber Agreement, 1994. Published : 1 February 2006. REDUCED IMPACT LOGGING Reduced impact logging (RIL) is the intensively planned and carefully controlled implementation of timber harvesting operations to minimize environmental impacts on forest stands and soils. It involves a number of practical measures, such as: Pre-harvest forest inventories and the mapping of individual crop trees.
