Many years ago (decades now, if I’m being honest), I would begin a birthday countdown not long after Christmas. “Forty days until my birthday!”. I’d announce to anyone who’d listen. As you stir, break up the whole tomatoes into smaller pieces. Reduce this mixture to a thick sauce. Add salt and pepper to the sauce to taste, along with the rest of the basil leaves. Cook the pasta in generously salted water. INTRODUCING THE NEW FAMILY MEMBERS Jessica on 4 May 2016 22 January 2016. Introducing the New Family Members. In which I write a bit (a lot) about myself and my work. I am a traveler. I am a writer. I am a social butterfly. Thank goodness for the internet, where those things go together like Nutella and bananas. ITALY ROUNDTABLE: WHAT THE HELL AM I LISTENING TO This month’s installment of the Italy Blogging Roundtable has two sides – at least, it has two possible sides. We had decided on the topic of VICES AND VIRTUES last month, and then pushed it back in favor of writing about the earthquakes in Emilia-Romagna, so this month we’re back on track.. The brick walls are there for a reason. The brick walls are not there to keep us out; the brick walls are there to give us a chance to show how badly we want something. COOKING (& LIVING) FROM THE HIP In the 17+ years since I last lived on my own, a few things about me have changed. Okay, more than a few. For the purposes of this post, I’m going to focus on one thing – my cooking. NO BIRTHDAY SURPRISE REQUIRED A few years ago, I wrote some birthday resolutions just before I turned 40. I was, I realize now, extremely unhappy in a lot of ways, though at the time I just figured that was my lot in life. As I stared down the gauntlet of 41, I was reflecting on a mostly terrible year, completely unaware that 41 would bring both the most difficult thing I had ever done and, subsequently, the beginning of a ONE DOOR CLOSES (AND I’M OFF TO FIND THE NEXT DOOR I don’t know how your year is going, but so far 2012 and I are not on very good terms. The latest curve ball is a bit of a doozy. The short version of the story is that I lost my job on Friday (though, I’m assured, not because I was doing it poorly), and I’ve been in recovery mode since then. TRAVEL WRITING: WHY IT SUCKS I tracked down the story in question and, as it happens, I did read it when it came out. It is my understanding that the publication in which the story ran does not permit its freelance contributors to accept any type of discounted or free travel, hotel stays, meals, etc., so the speaker would seem to be incorrect if he intended to imply that such perks were actually received by the writer of HOW A HIGH SCHOOL REUNION IS ACTUALLY ABOUT THE PRESENT my alma mater colors outside the reunion I’ve been flipping through my high school yearbooks lately..
