HOW DOES ANTENNA HEIGHT AFFECT VHF COMMUNICATIONS To calculate range for an antenna such as the KB9VBR J-Pole antenna, you can use this simple equation to determine antenna’s receiving range over a flat surface: range in miles = square root of height X 1.42.An antenna mounted at 30 feet should have a theoretical range of 7.78 miles. BUILDING AN OFF CENTER FED (OCF) DIPOLE ANTENNA The OCF or Off Center Fed Dipole antenna is much like a conventional dipole antenna in that the formula you use to calculate the length of it is the same. RADIODDITY BAOFENG UV-5RX3 TRI-BAND HANDHELD RADIO So 220 radios and repeater systems tend to have better range and coverage than similar VHF and UHF systems. With that said, I was excited when Radioddity approached me to take a look at their new handheld, the Baofeng UV-5RX3. The UV-5RX3 is a triband radio with coverage on the 2 meter, 70 cm, and 1.25 meter 222 Mhz band. YouTube.KB9VBR Antennas.

CROSS-BAND REPEAT WITH THE YAESU FTM-400XDR Simply put, cross-band repeating is an effective way to extend the range of your handheld radio. The cross-band repeat function works by using using a dual band mobile or base radio to retransmit on one frequency band a signal received on another frequency band, and viceversa.
CAN I SHARE MY ANTENNA WITH 2 RADIOS Great question I receive is how to split the signal from the antenna for two or more radios to use. If you live an area that doesn’t allow for multiple antennas to be installed, or have multiple radios that you would like to share a common antenna with, then splitting the signal is a big concern. USING AN EXTERNAL ANTENNA WITH YOUR HANDHELD RADIO Starting out in amateur radio, our first rig usually is the venerable handheld radio. Compact and all-in-one design, these HT’s or handi-talkies are an inexpensive choice. In fact, now with the Chinese handhelds flooding the market, a ham can get on the air for as little as $30. But soon after buying one, you realize the HOW TO BUILD YOUR OWN DMR DIGITAL RADIO CODE PLUG A DMR radio isn’t any good if it doesn’t have any frequencies or channels programmed into it. 6 METER J-POLE AMATEUR RADIO ANTENNA Six meters, often called the 'magic band' can be mystifying at times. Bridging between the HF spectrum and the VHF/UHF spectrum, 6 meters shares the propagation vagaries of both. You quite never know when sporadic-E is going to open up or an inversion layer sets in and whisks your signals to who know where. If you are a lover of 6 meters, then this antenna is for you. BUILD A DIPOLE ANTENNA CENTER INSULATOR One of the most common and ubiquitous antennas for amateur radio is the simple dipole antenna. And for good reason‚ dipole antennas are easy to build and are proven performers. The ARRL antenna book says this about dipole antennas: The dipole is a fundamental form of antenna – in its most common form it is VHF PUBLIC SAFETY, MURS, MARINE, & SCANNER SLIM JIM Our extremely popular Slim Jim Antenna is now available for the VHF 150 - 160 MHz band. This means our Slim Jm is optimized for VHF Public Safety, MURS, Marine band, and Business frequencies. The Slim Jim is an end fed folded dipole antenna that gives you approximately 5.5db of gain. Plus the antenna also have the great low noise floor and wide bandwidth typical of our other antennas. BUILD IT: 2 METER 1/4 WAVE GROUND PLANE ANTENNA Today we’re going to build a simple ground plane for the VHF 2 meter band. Ground plane antennas are easy to recognize by their appearance. First off you’ll notice the radiating element. This element is 1/4 wavelength long, or about 19 inches for the 2 meter band. Next up are the ground radials. a ground plane will often have three or four DOES MY J-POLE ANTENNA NEED THE CHOKE BALUN Bryan, LMR-400 cable is pretty stiff, so using 2-3 ferrite chokes near the feedpoint (about 12 inches) of the antenna is a good substitute. Radio Shack carries a couple of ferrites (#273-1005) but I’m not sure if the diameter of the core is big enough to accommodate LMR-400. The antenna was a learning experience, and Bob is going back to the drawing board to create a bigger and better balloon lifted vertical antenna. Weather Balloon: $80. Wire and Connectors: $60. WHAT IS THE DISTANCE THAT MY ANTENNA WILL RECEIVE Antenna range is a common question that I receive from ham radio operators and scanner buffs looking to purchase my antennas. I wish there was an easy answer to this question, but unfortunately there are plenty of variables to consider when analyzing what kind of distance you’ll receive from your KB9VBR J-Pole or Slim Jim Antenna. EXTENDING THE RANGE OF THE DAKOTA ALERT MURS DRIVEWAY Connecting the antennas to the transmitters or receivers is easy; you’ll need two parts, both of which are available at Radio Shack. First is a BNC to PL-259 adapter, RS part number #278-120 and some RG-58 coax cable with PL-259 connectors RS part number 278-967. Attach the antenna to a pole, mast, or even a fence post driven into theground.

VHF/UHF ANTENNAS FOR AMATEUR RADIO, PUBLIC SAFETY, BUSINESS BAND, SCANNING, AND BROADCAST Welcome and thanks for viewing my site. My name is Michael, KB9VBR, and I carry a full line of VHF and UHF antennas for sale. I specialize in a certain type of antenna called a J-Pole. The J-Pole antenna is a 1/2 wave antenna with a 1/4 wave matching stub. Sounds complicated, but it really isn't. The great thing about J-Pole antennas is their simple design and excellent performance. My antennas have a low noise floor and a beautiful omnidirectional radiation pattern. They work great for amateur radio, public safety, scanner listening, business band, andGMRS purposes.
Got a question? Great, use my contact form to ask away. I'll be gladto answer them.

The 2-Meter JPole antenna I bought from you recently is working great! With the top of the antenna less than 30 feet in the air, I get great signal reports from more than 25 miles away while running on a 5-wattHT.
Bill, K2WML
I received my 220 J-Pole today and installed it, and immediately started contacting people on the Condor Connection. I hit three of their repeaters, one ninety miles away, all with great signal reports. Thanks for the rapid delivery. Love the antenna, made getting on 220 easy. Thanks………Jim Jim Tank Just wanted you to know how great I think your antennas are, first one I bought was the J-Pole,very good, then I bought a slim jim better yet,at 34ft.on top of my house, i can reach a repeater 90 to 100 miles away. Just ordered one more to put on a tower, will be around 47ft high, I expect to be able to reach further. Thanks KC9QPP. KC9QPP I have been using a prototype of Michael’s UHF Slim Jim antenna for about a year now. I am very pleased with it’s performance, & the wide SWR spread between 440-470 mhz. I would recommend it to anybody who needs this type of antenna. GARY N4KVE Gary, N4KVE Thanks, I received the J-Pole today! . . . I tested the J-Pole in my hand while hooked up to my VX-7R on 50mw of power. I was able to hit a repeater in Mt. Equinox, VT, 46 miles north east of me! Wow! Thanksagain! Mark, KC2OKN
As a new Tech i wanted a 2m/70cm set up for as little money as possible. I bought a Chinese Anytone AT-588UV and the Slim Jim antenna. . . The performance is so good that I can hit repeaters 75+ miles away with “full quieting” signal reports, of course the repeaters are at 8,000+ feet and the greater Phoenix, AZ Valley is propagation friendly, but still, the Slim Jim is an amazing performer. Well done KB9VBR! KG7FDW I just wanted to say thank you very much. The antenna is great and I can now reach repeaters farther than I ever expected. Some repeaters I thought were not active on my handheld I have found active now! My old antenna just could not reach. eBay Member Garrettautoparts I thought Id let you know about my experience since I’ve owned your 2 meter jpole for a few months now. Tonight I had an APRS come through from your hometown of Wausau which is 244 miles from me and over the lake ! As my QTH is 20 miles north of Grand Rapids mi, it has performed well with satellites perfectly and have caught some amazing QSO’s. Once again thanks for the great piece of equipment _ _Tyler
Just a quick note to tell you the antenna was installed and worked extremely well. A 25W landmobile portable set up as a base was able to be heard 28 miles from TX point on a handheld!! Farther ( by a lot) then we needed but proof that it gets out. Sean ThompsonStart
