OUR HISTORY
Our History. Kielder Observatory was opened in March 2008. The vision of its original director Gary Fildes, the Observatory was opened by the former Astronomer Royal Sir Arnold Wolfendale, and now has a world class reputation for astronomical outreach under one of the best dark sky sites in all of Europe.. Join us at Kielder Observatory for the famous Lyrid Meteor Shower, every year the atmosphere of the earth is peppered with comet dust. We see this comet dust in our night sky as shooting stars, also known as meteors. Every 415 years a comet called C/1981 G1 (Thatcher) completes one orbit around the Sun. The Observatory was opened by Sir Arnold Wolfendale, 14th Astronomer Royal, and has a design in keeping with the ethos of the forest, not only in style but also being environmentally friendly.The observatory look is the result of a design competition, tendered to over 230 architectural firms around the world, and which was won by Charles Barclay Architects, based in London.GETTING HERE

CORONAVIRUS MEASURES Additional measures we have put in place are: All staff will have their temperature checked on arrival. One member of staff will be in charge of additional cleaning measures throughout the event – door handles, handrails, toilets will be cleaned every 30 minutes. Telescope eyepieces and other equipment will be sanitised betweenguest use.

In 2020 the planets aligned, quite literally, and 3 missions launched with the same destination in mind- Mars. About half of all Mars missions have failed, but with Hope and Tianwen-1 already in orbit and working well, 2021 could well be shaping up to be a year of historic success.EVENTS : SPACE KIDS

These are our main evening events which are aimed at all levels of knowledge and experience and ideally ages from 8yrs upwards and last 3 hours. VOLUNTEER - KIELDER OBSERVATORY Kielder Observatory is happy to support and pay incurred travel costs that any volunteers have (a maximum limit applies), and we provide on site training, which has included areas as diverse as telescope operations to first aid training. Kielder is a magical place, which after you visit you'll most likely want to come back again and again. WHICH EVENT IS BEST FOR ME? These are our main evening events which are aimed at all levels of knowledge and experience and ideally ages from 8yrs upwards and last 3 hours. Our History. Kielder Observatory was opened in March 2008. The vision of its original director Gary Fildes, the Observatory was opened by the former Astronomer Royal Sir Arnold Wolfendale, and now has a world class reputation for astronomical outreach under one of the best dark sky sites in all of Europe..
