Last week, blog reader Jenn asked what’s on a lot of teachers' minds: "Could we maybe address the elephant in the room and that being why so many incredibly amazing teachers are leaving or looking to leave the profession?" I use these as Brain Teaser Tuesdays (I enjoy alliteration), but they’ll work great any day of the week. 2. Use them to soak up those occasional last few minutes of a class period when a FREE MEDIA LITERACY WORKSHEETS Last week, Stanford researchers released a “bleak” report showing that more than 80 percent of students can’t determine the difference between real and fake news. FAMOUS FAILURES #2 EVEN MORE GROWTH MINDSET Can you name the famous figures who faced the following? Ready for the answers? Here we go! The first set of Famous Failures bulletin board materials were such a hit I knew I needed to build a second set. Click here to see my newest collection of 24 historic and modern examples of famous people who picked themselves up after early career failure.. I use the materials as an interactive bulletin CONQUERING QUESTION FATIGUE 6. Place students into groups of three and give each team just one question from the study guide. Before class, write each team’s question on a Post-It Note or just slice up an existing question sheet. The trio needs to discuss the question and become experts on the answer. Once teams have had time to discuss and research theiranswer, they

Here’s a low-prep, high-quality formative assessment idea that I’ll definitely be adding to my classes this year. Thanks to a dear friend in the history department who encouraged me to modify her idea for my English teacher posse (You’re the best, M.W.!), I’m happy to present Odd One Out, a short-answer response idea that should OKAY, SO I WAS WRONG Okay, So I Was Wrong. I’ve been slow to embrace the idea of group essays. Several teachers I know use group essays, replacing one of the big writing assignments of the year with a group assignment where they place three or four students together and task them to collaborate on a single paper. This always feels like a cheat to me, especially 5 THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT THE NEW MLA WORKS CITED Hi Margaret, Great questions! And I can understand your confusion. If you have students who need to add weight or maturity to their writing voices, a quick fix is to teach them that part of the problem lies in their habit of ending sentences with prepositions. Though not the gravest of writing sins, tacking a preposition onto the end of a sentence can make the writer’s voice in a formal document too casual ESSAY WRITING HELP: CONCLUDING PARAGRAPHS Essay Writing Help: Concluding Paragraphs. On a Mission to Prevent English Teacher Burnout. Avoid the mental slog that sometimes arrives in the middle of a novel unit with unexpected and, dare I say, fun activities that will keep your students reading, thinking, and writing. DOSE SPELLING MADDER? YES AND NO Hi Laura . . . I was traumatized in elementary school for missing a word in an in class spelling bee. My third grade teacher told the kids they needed to do something about the fact that I messed up and I got beat-up after school for causing my team to lose. OKAY, SO I WAS WRONG Okay, So I Was Wrong. TURN A PDF INTO A GOOGLE WORKSHEET (NO ADD-ON By far, the top question I’ve been asked this week is how to turn a PDF worksheet into an interactive assignment that can be posted to Google Classroom. I use Adobe InDesign to create most of my PDF handouts and, unfortunately, there’s no converting an Adobe file into a fully editable Google file. I’ve been up since before the sun, working my way through three sections of essays on “The Scarlet Ibis,” a gut-wrenchingly sad short story by James Hurst. For the 22nd time this morning, I read clumsy attempts of freshman brains trying to symbolically connect thecrushed red body of
MESS WITH THEIR MINDS 1. Use as a routine bell-ringer activity to begin class one day each week. I use these as Brain Teaser Tuesdays (I enjoy alliteration), but they’ll work great any day of the week. 2. Use them to soak up those occasional last few minutes of a class period when a 5 BEST TWILIGHT ZONE EPISODES FOR THE CLASSROOM “Hey Ms. R., that was pretty goodfor a school movie.”Yes, The Twilight Zone, that 60-year-old black-and-white TV show, earns what I call high praise from teenagers. Part biography/part mystery, the program is POETRY FOR TEENS WHO THINK THEY DON’T LIKE POETRY Even the most reluctant students love creating “found” poems, also known as blackout poetry. All you’ll need to fill an entire class session is this Prezi (click here to download a FREE copy from my shop), dark markers or crayons, and a few newspaper pages or photocopies of a few pages from any novel you’re currently studying.Begin with an explanation of the technique, hand out 5 THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT THE NEW MLA WORKS CITED Hi Margaret, Great questions! And I can understand your confusion. So the MLA folks consider Netflix (and other portals, such as Hulu, YouTube, etc.) to be separate “containers,” which means you end the first “container” info. involving the Discovery Channel with the 2013 date (end with that period) and then launch the second container info. involving Netflix as the second separate line. OKAY, SO I WAS WRONG Okay, So I Was Wrong. I’ve been slow to embrace the idea of group essays. Several teachers I know use group essays, replacing one of the big writing assignments of the year with a group assignment where they place three or four students together and task them to collaborate on a single paper.
