Philadelphia II. In May 1989, Lake Champlain Maritime Museum began construction of a replica of the Philadelphia. To save time, LCMM boatbuilders used modern power tools in conjunction with traditional hand tools, but a period-correct blacksmith shop was built to forge the ironwork, including nearly 9,000 nails. BRITISH SLOOP BOSCAWEN (NYSM 11684) The British Sloop Boscawen was discovered in 1983 when the Champlain Maritime Society (CMS), a predecessor of the Lake Champlain Maritime Museum, surveyed the bottom of the Lake Champlain between Fort Ticonderoga and Mount Independence.The goal of this survey project was to locate the “Great Bridge” that spanned this section of the lake in 1776 and connected these two formidable LAKE CHAMPLAIN MARITIME MUSEUM Connect with Lake Champlain. PINE STREET BARGE CANAL BREAKWATER SITE The Pine Street Canal Breakwater site contains the remains of four vessels: three mid-twentieth century construction barges (VT-CH-793, VT-CH-795, and VT-CH-797) and the mid-nineteenth century lake schooner Excelsior (VT-CH-796).The sites were initially located during a 1991 Phase I Archaeological Survey for a Proposed AT&T Fiber Optic Cable Line from Burlington, Vermont to Keesville, New York.ADULT ROWING
The Rowing for Racing Club is our advanced adult rowing club which meets every Tuesday evening at the Museum campus. Best suited for intermediate and experienced adult rowers of all ages (18-99+), this weekly club sets out for an aggressive 1.5 to 2 hour row each week and practice strength training, rowing techniques, and endurance. OPEN-WATER ROWING RACES Open-Water Rowing Races. The Champlain Longboats program at Lake Champlain Maritime Museum hosts four open water rowing races or light craft races each year for regional youth rowing teams, as well as adult rowing teams. REPUBLIC SEABEE SEAPLANE Sonar Image of the Republic Seabee. The Seabee, a civilian airplane, was built in the years following World War II by Republic as an inexpensive amphibian aircraft. Its low cost was intended to appeal to returning WWII veterans. Although the Seabee was never commercially successful, it was considered a safe and rugged aircraft. Boat building students come to the boat shop at Lake Champlain Maritime Museum for five days a week for five months to build a 32′ wooden rowing gig. Students learn to use woodworking tools, collaborate with peers and program staff, and understand what it means to function effectively in a working environment. Along the way, theykeep
COMMERCIAL ERA (1823-1945) Decline of Lake Commerce (1874-1945) One of the most negative effects on Lake Champlain commerce resulted from the construction of a rail line on the western shore of Lake Champlain. Many vessels operating on the lake had depended upon the transport of bulky cargoes of iron ore mined in the Adirondack Mountains.ADULT ROWING
