This tune was heavily adopted by bebopers such as Charlie Parker and Clifford Brown and remains to be a popular jam session tune for cutting contests. It has adopted a reputation as a MINORITY - LEARN JAZZ STANDARDS “Minority” was written by American musician Gigi Gryce. This tune was first recorded with Clifford Brown in 1953. Since then it has been recorded and performed by many jazz greats and has become a standard piece in the jazz repertoire. This tune is most commonly played in thekey of F minor.

Because of its popularity, All The Things You Are is often on the short list of songs that beginners should learn. CORCOVADO - LEARN JAZZ STANDARDS Corcovado is a wonderful bossa nova tune by Antonio Carlos Jobim. It’s also known as “Quiet Nights and Quiet Stars,” which is the first lyric of the tune when sung in English. It was originally written in Portuguese. It is important to know that this tune can be a 34-bar or 36-bar song form. 24 PLACES TO USE THE DIMINISHED SCALE The Diminished Scale is often misunderstood. Many people first learn to improvise using major and blues scales, and so we are used to learning scales that have a different scale for WORK SONG - LEARN JAZZ STANDARDS “Work Song” was written by Nat Adderley. This tune is essentially a 16 bar F minor blues. Pay special attention to the hits that are played on the head. Check out the original recording to learn them, as they are an important part of this composition.STRAIGHT NO CHASER
“Straight No Chaser” is a 12-bar blues head written by Thelonius Monk. It was first recorded on Monk’s Blue Note Sessions in 1951. The song was originally written in Bb, but later it became popular in F as well due to Miles Davis’s famous recording on his hit record“Milestones”.
SOFTLY, AS IN A MORNING SUNRISE “Softly, As In A Morning Sunrise” is a tune written by Sigmund Romberg with lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II. It was written for the 1928 operetta “The New Moon”. The lyrics are bitter and talk of yearning for a lost love. HOW TO SUBSTITUTE A DOMINANT 7 FOR A DIMINISHED 7 A diminished 7 chord can replace an altered dominant 7 chord (commonly b9 or #9) when the root of the diminished 7 is a half-step above the root of the altered dominant 7. Essentially, if you see a dominant 7 chord resolving to another chord, it can be altered. For example, a ii-V-I chord progression. The G7 is resolving to a Cmaj7.__
