APPROVED REGULATORS
Approved regulators. The Legal Services Board is the oversight regulator for legal services approved regulators in the Legal Services Act 2007. These bodies directly regulate the lawyers practising in England and Wales. Some of the approved regulators are also licensing authorities which means that they can license alternative business RESERVED LEGAL ACTIVITIES Section 12 of the Legal Services Act 2007 (“the LSA”) first sets out the six specific legal services activities that only those who are authorised (or those who are exempt) can carry on.These are called “reserved legal activities” and their scope is set out in Schedule 2. The largest ever survey of legal needs in England and Wales lays bare the advantages of the public understanding the legal landscape and seeking professional legal help. Six in 10 adults (64%) experienced a legal problem in the last four years, including 53% who faced a contentious 1 problem. The Board was delighted to meet stakeholders from across the profession in Wales this week as part of our ongoing programme of virtual events to hear from those we work alongside in tackling the legal services sector’s challenges. We discussed technology, diversity and inclusion, access to justice and market transparency from a Wales perspective. We STATE OF LEGAL SERVICES 2020 REPORT State of Legal Services 2020 event – 14 January 2021. Following the publication of our State of Legal Services 2020 report, we have developed a draft strategy for the legal services sector, alongside our draft business plan 2021-22. Our consultation closed on 05 February. The draft strategy outlines the part that we will play intackling the

INDEPENDENT REGULATION Background. Concern about self-regulation by some categories of lawyers was one reason why the Legal Services Act 2007 was introduced.
