OFFICER DUTY TO INTERVENE: WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW The officer “duty to intervene” (or intercede) concept has recently been thrust into the spotlight, but there are many misconceptions about what this duty entails. It can be difficult to watch scenarios unfold without asking the question: Why didn’t the other officer(s) step in? By law and by department policy, officers are required to intercede in certain circumstances.
