LET'S LOOK AT LIONS

LION REPRODUCTION & OFFSPRING OF THE AFRICAN LION During the periods between intercourse, the pair may lie down next to each other or walk a short distance. The male may gently stroke the female with his tongue on the shoulder, neck or back to initiate. Towards the end of copulation, the male may gently bite the back of her neck. During copulation, the female may purr loudly. Male cats have spines on their penis to cause slight trauma to the CHIZARIRA NATIONAL PARK Lion research. The African Lion and Environmental Research Trust (ALERT) began lion research in Chizarira in 2017. The research is aimed at understanding the population ecology of lions in the park and surrounds (numbers, population structure, pride dynamics, movements, associations between prides, interactions with other large predatorsand so on).

Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV) FIV is a significant cause of disease in domestic cats (FIV fca) producing AIDS-like pathology characterized by CD4 depletion, immune suppression and death.Species-specific strains of FIV were demonstrated in non-domestic cat species; however general opinion was that FIV ple, widespread in African lions, was benign.LION PHYSIOLOGY
Lion cubs are born with woolly, greyish coats. The coat is spotted (some more so than others), especially on the head, legs and back which aids in camouflage against their many predators, including hyena, leopard and buffalo. MEET THE LION FAMILY Lions. The head of the family is the pride male. He’s the king of the pride and it’s his job to protect the female lions, called lionesses and their young cubs.PREDATORY BEHAVIOUR

Fossil evidence suggests that lions have roamed the world’s wildernesses for approximately 1.8 million years, and were formally the most widespread large land mammal on Earth. LION DEPICTION ACROSS ANCIENT & MODERN RELIGIONS Egyptian Sphinx. Across history and across religion, the half-human half-lion is an icon of remarkable consistency and persistency. ALERT
AFRICAN LION & ENVIRONMENTAL RESEARCH TRUST IF WE ACT NOW WE CAN ENSURE THE SURVIVAL OF THIS ICONIC SPECIESWELCOME TO ALERT
Lions are currently listed as “Vulnerable” on the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List of Threatened Species. In West Africa, the species is now classified as “Critically Endangered”. Just over one hundred years ago, there were once more than 200,000 wild lions living in Africa. Today, there are only about 20,000 wild lions taking the plains of Africa. Lions are now extinct in 26 different African countries and 95 per cent of their historic rangehas disappeared.
Neither lions nor humans can survive in isolation; both are reliant on functional ecosystems. As such, we seek to engage in activities that conserve all of Africa’s wild species, as well as the ecosystems within which they live and on which we rely. ALERT collaborates with communities and policymakers, with non-governmental organizations, researchers and business leaders, to implement locally conceived and relevant solutions that aim to create sustainable motivation in these stakeholder groups to conservelions.
OUR DESTINATIONS
CHIZARIRA NATIONAL PARK ALERT is working to rehabilitate the national park and restore the landscape and wildlife to become one of the leading parks in Zimbabwe.ANTELOPE PARK
Antelope Park is a private game reserve set in the heart of Zimbabwe. This is where ALERT began and where a large portion of the research isdone.
VICTORIA FALLS
Victoria Falls is the leading tourist destination of Zimbabwe/Africa where a majority of the animal research is done by the team andvolunteers.
OUR WORK
The loss of lions has a negative effect on Africa’s fragile ecosystems. Lions play an important role in the food chain, helping to regulate numbers of the more dominant herbivore species, such aszebra and buffalo.
LION RELEASE PROGRAM ALERT recognizes that programs directed towards protecting habitat for the remaining wild lions must continue to be the mainstay of conservation efforts and that new multi-disciplinary and collaborative approaches are necessary to achieve this.
