BIODIVERSITY AND GREEN ROOFS Biodiversity on extensive green roofs. Detailed research in Switzerland and the United Kingdom has shown that ecologically designed extensive green roofs can provide good habitat for wildlife. However, there are limitations in terms of replicating habitat at ground level. In the first place, green roofs are very ‘stressed’environments.
GREEN ROOFS AND AIR QUALITY IN CITIES Green Roofs can help air quality in London. Extensive planting within cities is now widely recognised as a means of improving air quality. Therefore, green roofs contribute to the reduction of a number of polluting air particles and compounds not only through the plants themselves, but also by deposition in the growing medium itself. BIOSOLAR GREEN ROOFS Whilst it is increasingly common to combine solar panels with green roofs, true biosolar green roofs are where green roof and solar technologies are integrated in a seamless fashion. In addition, true biosolar green roofs , especially on extensive green roofs is also designed to maximise biodiversity. GREEN ROOFS AND RAINWATER HARVESTING Water quality can be improved when a green roof is installed on a building. Pollutants within the atmosphere and from roofs can cause run off from roofs to have poor water quality. Many studies in Europe and North America have shown that green roofs can improve the waterquality of

The amount will be dependent on the depth and type of substrate in the green roof system. In the summer a green roof can typically retain between 70%-80% of the run off. In Germany between 40%-100% of rainfall can be retained –dependent
MEXICAN HILLSIDE IN LONDON, DAVID MATZDORF'S GREEN ROOF The green roof covers the whole house. The planted area is 15m x 5.5m and the roof is a curved mono-pitch, with a flat area at the top and an increasing slope toward the bottom, with its steepest point at 22º. It slopes down toward the Northeast. The top (flat) end is shady, the middle is very sun-baked and the bottom end is moderatelysunny.

GREEN ROOFS, THE MENTAL AND PHYSICAL HEALTH BENEFITS There is growing evidence that visual and physical contact with natural greenery provides a range of benefits to people. These include both mental health benefits (such as reduction of stress) and physical health benefits (including cleaner air). Access to green space can bring about direct improvem GREEN ROOFS & SOLAR POWER Green roofs and solar power – often referred to as Biosolar roofs – is smart green infrastructure. SCHOOLS - LEARNING THROUGH GREEN ROOFS Teaching sustainability should be an important part of the curriculum. A green roof is the perfect place to learn about green infrastructure and how cities could adapted to climate change. Cities need to become more resilient – soil and vegetation is a key element in this agenda – helping: reduce the effects of the urban heat island. INTRODUCTION TO TYPES OF GREEN ROOFS ON BUILDINGS IN CITIES Types of Green Roofs. Green roofs are internationally placed in three different ’types’: Of course there is some cross over between the categories. Intensive - parks and gardens including Urban Agriculture Semi-intensive - garden green roofs Extensive - natural low maintenance green roofs Blue-gr GRO AND THE CODE OF PRACTICE FOR GREEN ROOFS IN THE UK GRO is a partnership of industry and stakeholders that came together over 10 years ago to develop a Code of Practice for green roofs in the UK. The latest GRO Code of Practice, launched in 2014, is available here The partnership is currently working on the next update of the Code. GRO is an open and inclusive organisation. GREEN WALLS ARE ESSENTIALLY A LIVING CLADDING SYSTEM Green walls or living walls are part of Green Infrastructure in the urban realm when it comes to buildings. Climbers have been used as a self-regenerating cladding system for centuries. However, there are now modern techniques and processes that have taken the idea of planted walls to a whole new level. GREEN ROOFS AND URBAN HEAT ISLAND EFFECT The Urban Heat Island Effect (UHIE), already a problem for cities across the globe, will be exacerbated as the planet gets hotter. Green spaces in cities are recognised as ameliorating the adverse effects of the Urban Heat Island. ’Summers by 2050 will be 1.5 - 3.5ºC hotterin central London. The DAVID ATTENBOROUGH BUILDING AND CAMBRIDGE GREEN ROOF POLICY The David Attenborough Green Roof – Cambridge. The David Attenborough Building is an iconic brutalist building originally designed by Arup Associates in the 1960s. However, it underwent a refurbishment to house the Cambridge Conservation Initiative (CCI) in 2015 by Nicholas Hare Architects. The refurbishment included redesigning the roofscape. HAMBURG TO BURY THE A7 MOTORWAY Hamburg to bury the A7 motorway – as Linz did over seven years ago. Hamburg is the latest city in Europe to reconnect neighbourhoods with a green roof over its motorway. As is common in many cities in the world, motorways can disconnect neighbourhoods. By covering the transport links with green roofs, not only does the traffic disappearbut
THE BLUE GREEN ROOF
The blue green roof – helping cities cope with stormwater. The blue green roof combines blue and green roof technologies. Conventional green roofs conventional use a drainage layer to provide lateral drainage and irrigation. Blue roof technology, however, aims to increase both the volume of water stored and control the amount ofwater released.

GREEN ROOFS AND ENERGY CONSERVATION Energy performance is a key benefit of green roofs. Whilst green roofs are important for cooling cities as a whole, a green roof can roof can also have a positive impact on the energy balance within any given building. This is particularly relevant if a building has poor insulation and poor ventilation. SCHOOLS - LEARNING THROUGH GREEN ROOFS Teaching sustainability should be an important part of the curriculum. Urban Rooftop food – Intensive green roofs and farms. Rooftop food growing has a growing interest. In general, rooftop farms or gardens, sit within the intensive green roof category. However, it is possible to grow herbs on extensive green roofs. For instance Allium species can thrive on extensive green roofs, especially chives. GREEN ROOFS AND LIVING WALLS IN THE NETHERLANDS Green roofs and living walls are a booming business in the Netherlands. Many respected architects integrate green roofs in their designs as a common practice. Project-developers and housing associations also see the benefits. Specifically the multiple uses of space is beneficial where space is limited, which in the Netherlandsoften poses a
AN INTRODUCTION TO INTENSIVE GREEN ROOFS Intensive green roofs are the heavy-weights, literally, of the green roof world. In essence, they are parks or gardens on roofs. Intensive green roofs - maintenance The word ’intensive’ actually refers to the amount of input required to maintain a green roof. As parks and gardens, they need freque THE ORIGINAL BROWN ROOF The original brown roof – biodiversity in action. This green roof – or rather ‘brown’ roof gave birth to livingroofs.org at the Laban Dance Centre in Deptford London. Installed in 2002, we have been visiting this roof for over 16 years on a regular basis. How better to start our new green roof photo of the week. SMALL GREEN ROOF GUIDE The small green roof online grew out of the innovation that occurred in a garden and property in Essex in the UK. With a range of green roofs the Urban Landscape Festival due to take place in July 2018 is the perfect venue to show how to create landscapes for people andwildlife.

THE UK'S LEADING INDEPENDENT GREEN ROOF WEBSITE Livingroofs.org is an independent organisation set up by Dusty Gedge in 2002 to promote green roofs and living walls in urban areas in the UK and around the world. The organisation has been a member of the European Federation of Green Roof and Wall Associations (EFB) since 2006 as the UK representative. Dusty Gedge is the current president of the EFB, an office he has held since 2008. Livingroofs.org is a rich resource providing news, analysis and in-depth research into the latest innovations in green roof and wall technology and developments in the industry, from contractors and suppliers to large-scale developers. The campaigning work carried out by livingroofs.org led to the first ever green roof policy being made in the UK. In 2019, we produced a green roof and wall report assessing the success of this policy which was introduced into the London Plan 2008: LIVING ROOFS AND WALLS: FROM POLICY TO PRACTICE – 10 YEARS OF URBAN GREENING IN LONDON AND BEYOND. Although this report is available online here, over the coming months, we will be publishing additional articles and blogs. These aim to add greater detail to elements in the report, including: * exemplar case studies from London, around the UK, Europe and therest of the world
* articles looking at cities around the world which are developing policies and new approaches to green roofs and walls * a full set of infographics for London – the Greater London Authority, the Central Activity Zone and 33 boroughs/councils withinthe UK capital
Livingroofs.org also provides a consultancy service. The organisation and our associates are recognised international authorities on urban green infrastructure.*
