Previously, he was also project lead for the Panorama Project; director, content strategy & audience development for Library Journal & School Library Journal; and founding director of programming & business development for Digital Book World. HOW I BUILT PLATFORMS, AND HOW THEY DETERIORATED OVER TIME I’ve written about the importance of platforms numerous times over the years — from both the writer’s and publisher’s perspective — but I’ve never explicitly dug into my own personal and professional experiences with them. The two I’ve referenced the most are my history in the slam poetry scene and how I helped launch the original Digital Book World, but they’ve usually been THE RISE AND FALL OF DIGITAL BOOK WORLD Digital Book World debuted in January 2010 in the midst of giddy predictions that both traditional publishing and print itself were dead, perhaps best personified by the Tools of Change conference, an annual gathering of pundits and technophiles who relished dancing on the industry’s virtual grave. The iPad officially debuted on DBW’s second day and the program was adjusted to RUNNING THROUGH 2019 Fast forward to 2012 and I purposefully started running again because I thought it’d be fun to do a Tough Mudder with some friends! In my closing comments at the first Digital Book World, I declared: “People are reading more than ever, and some think that’s a threat to publishers.I think it’s an opportunity.” Any publisher who can’t recognize the opportunity libraries have to play a role in maintaining a viable consumer marketplace is effectively PUBLISHING DIRT: PRIORITIZING THE WHITE GAZE FOR FUN Guy LeCharles Gonzalez is the Chief Content Officer for LibraryPass, and former publisher & marketing director for Writer’s Digest. Previously, he was also project lead for the Panorama Project; director, content strategy & audience development for Library Journal & School Library Journal; and founding director of programming & business development for Digital Book World. IN THE BIG 5'S SHADOW, PUBLISHING GETS CREATIVE Jessica Russell (Sno-Isle Libraries) demonstrated the peculiar unsustainability of expensive library ebook prices combined with expiration terms—typically two years or either 26 or 52 checkouts per ebook for the Big Five and a few other large publishers—where maintaining access to a single copy of Michelle Obama’s Becoming would cost them $275 over 10 years. SUBARU, RED BULL AND RABBIT HOLES—HOW I GOT SUCKED INTO I’ve nibbled at the fringes of car culture off-and-on over the years—from impulsive subscriptions to Car & Driver and Motor Trend; dozens of hours spent playing Project Gotham Racing and Forza Horizon; and even my time in the Army as a Light Wheel Vehicle Mechanic—but a string of unrelated events last year somehow culminated in my having a 2019 calendar featuring photos of rally RESUME — GUY LECHARLES GONZALEZ Entrepreneurial media professional with 25 years’ consumer and B2B experience in audience development, content strategy, community engagement, and print & digital publishing.DISCLOSURES

TEAMWORK MAKES THE DREAM WORK—RANDOM MUSINGS ON #WDC19 The weirdest Summer of my professional career came to a surreal close this past weekend as I attended the Writer's Digest Annual Conference as a speaker and journalist rather than the publisher and marketing director who curated ~80% of the event before my departure in early July. I'm obviously still biased, but overall, it was an invigorating experience—from the amazing keynotes and insightful presenters, to the mini-reunion with some of my all-time favorite colleagues, all survivors of F+W Media's disastrous bankruptcy process that seems to have ended relatively well... for Writer's Digest, at least. MARKETING MEMOS: METRICS, CHURN, AUTHENTICITY, AND PLATFORMPERSONALITIES
I read (and listen to) a lot about what's happening in marketing and media these days, and while the desire for clicks and the illusion of engagement generates a lot of useless noise, there are still some good, actionable insights being put out there that can be easily missed. I share the good stuff on Twitter and LinkedIn when I find it, but "Marketing Memos" is a weekly selection of 3-5 of the most interesting and insightful articles and podcast episodes—curated after I've had a chance to process them and identify the best. MACMILLAN’S LIBRARY EBOOK EMBARGO IS A CALL TO ACTION In a letter sent to “Macmillan Authors, Macmillan Illustrators, and Agents“ on Thursday, July 25th, Macmillan CEO John Sargent announced new lending terms and pricing for library ebooks, claiming library lending was “cannibalizing sales“ and impacting royalties as revenue from library sales are “a small fraction of the revenue we share with you on a retail read.” While the embargo is disappointing news for libraries, authors, and, most importantly, readers—it reinforces the need for a cross-industry initiative to identify ways publishers and libraries can continue to support their intrinsically related missions while delivering mutually beneficialoutcomes.

SCAPEGOATING LIBRARIES FOR DECLINING SALES. AGAIN. With few exceptions, publishers don't really know what drives most book sales, so the industry's focus on chasing bestsellers and trends lends itself to an unscientific combination of last-click attribution, confirmation bias, and way too often, scapegoats. Publishers have relied on booksellers and libraries to connect with readers for decades, but—despite the continued decline of physical bookstores, the intersectional challenge of "book deserts," and a lack of consistent and verifiable data on ebook sales—libraries seem to have become an easy scapegoat. Again. Guy LeCharles Gonzalez Marketing , PublishingLeave a comment
