Shakira didn't leave rock music fans entirely out of the equation during her Super Bowl LIV halftimeshow
performance alongside fellow superstar Jennifer Lopez on Sunday (Feb. 2). In separate portions of the concert, Shakira brandished a sparkly electric guitar and sat behind a drum kit. Not to mention the very rocking practice of crowd surfing that Shakira participated in during her televised Super Bowl set. As if to underscore her rock nods, Shakira also wore a Guns N' Roses T-Shirt to a pre-game event with J.Lo. See that photo and watch the pair's complete Super Bowl halftime show video down toward the bottom of this post.-advertisement-
For the second song of the evening, "Empire," Shakira donned an eye-catching red guitar during the chorus of the tune. (The number originally appears on the Colombian singer's self-titled 2014 album, and it was the second single from that effort, following "Can't Remember to Forget You" with Rihanna.)
The guitar that Shakira used during the show at Miami's Hard Rock Stadium was actually a customized version of a Gibson Firebird.
Loudwire included the same guitar in its 2019 Holiday Gear Guidelast year.
Just after that section, a portion of Led Zeppelin 's "Kashmir" was played by the band before Shakira continued her set. Later, the singer took some drum sticks to a white Pearl drum kit as J.Lo welcomed her daughter, 11-year-old Emme, to the stage for a duet that subsequently saw Shakira join in. Some more blatant rockers popped up during the commercial breaks. A new Pearl Jam song appeared in a Verizon ad,
and a classic Guns N' Roses tune formed the basis of a beer spot. Foo
Fighters' music got used in a T-Mobile commercial,
and a Facebook advertisement featured musical assistance from none other than Twisted Sister.

66. RISE AGAINST, 'HELP IS ON THE WAY' (2011) An impassioned response to the effects felt by communities in New Orleans as a result of Hurricane Katrina, “Help Is on the Way,” was the anthemic lead single from Chicago punks Rise Against’s sixth LP, _Endgame_. Built around a razor-sharp, catchy guitar line, it’s a track characterized by frontman Tim McIlrath’s trademark emotive delivery. A triumphant plea for compassion, “Help Is on the Way” displays the power that lies within Rise Against’s ranks. ––JakeRichardson
Wind-Up
65. EVANESCENCE, 'WHAT YOU WANT' (2011) After a lengthy gap between records, Evanescence returned with a self-titled album in 2011 and “What You Want” leading the way. Relying more on drums and synths early in the track, the song set a more driving and urgent pace before the guitars kicked in. But with Lee’s power vocals long being the centerpiece of the band, the singer gets a chance to unleash while singing about the empowering impact of not being afraid to dive headfirst into life. The track would top out at No. 7 on the Mainstream Rock Songs chart. —ChadChilders
Dirty Honey
64. DIRTY HONEY, 'WHEN I'M GONE' (2019) Whatever happened to good ol’ riffs and groove rock ’n’ roll? While it may not be as prominent as it once was, upstart Los Angeles rockers Dirty Honey may be at the center of bringing the sound back in style with “When I’m Gone” taking a trip to the top of the Mainstream Rock Chart in 2019. The undeniable hook from guitarist John Notto, catchy beats from Corey Coverstone and a “walk it” bass line from Justin Smolian provide the base for some “bad man” vocals from singer Marc Labelle. Their ascent was all the more remarkable considering the group remained an unsigned artist during their rise to No. 1. —CC Low Country Sound / Atlantic 63. RIVAL SONS, 'DO YOUR WORST' (2018) Rival Sons took to the wooded lands outside of Nashville, Tenn., to record their 2019 effort _Feral Roots_, and that atmosphere was especially influential on opening track “Do Your Worst.” With fuzzy riffs and gritty vocals, it sounds like a bluesy garage-rock track that was fermented in a smoked Tennessee whiskey barrel. While it reached the top of the Rock Songs chart and became a radio regular, its vintage sound made it stand out against many other high-performing contemporary rock hits. —Lauryn SchaffnerCentury Media
62. FOZZY, 'JUDAS' (2017) Fozzy are no overnight success story. After starting off more metal-leaning in the early stages of their career, the band eventually caught the notice of rock radio, earning their breakout hit “Judas” from the album of the same name in 2017. Chris Jericho does a standout job of building the tension, bridging a more hypnotic opening to the anthemic chorus, all while Rich Ward and Billy Grey deliver some muscular guitar riffs to pull in the listener. The track remains their highest charting song to date, peaking at No. 5 on the Mainstream Rock Chart. —CC International Death Cult 61. FRANK CARTER AND THE RATTLESNAKES, 'LULLABY' (2016) A far cry from his work with cult U.K. punks Gallows, but retaining a sense of darkness, Frank Carter’s work with The Rattlesnakes has seen him rise to become one of the most vital voices in British rock. “Lullaby,” taken from 2017’s _Modern Ruin_ LP, is a mainstream-friendly rocker with a widescreen chorus and plenty of groove. Angsty, anarchic and armed with a vicious edge, “Lullaby” is a monster of a track. ––JRBMG
60. GLORIOUS SONS, 'S.O.S.' (2018) Canadian rockers The Glorious Sons had nearly run their course on the _Young Beauties and Fools_ album when they decided to give one more song a shot at radio, and it turns out that it was worth it. “S.O.S. (Sawed Off Shotgun)” became their breakout hit on the U.S. airwaves, topping the Mainstream Rock chart. Though singing about the most dire of circumstances, the band keeps the mood light and the music incredibly catchy. Never has a downward spiral been so enjoyable.—CC

59. AFI, 'I HOPE YOU SUFFER' (2013) 2013’s ninth album _Burials_ was a record steeped in darkness, but AFI retained a sense of hope across its 13 tracks. The pick of the bunch is “I Hope You Suffer,” a sultry, brooding song that sees frontman Davey Havok’s voice swell around the band’s ethereal music. Combining punk rock with goth, dark-wave and more progressive elements, “I Hope You Suffer” is pure fire. ––JRVirgin
58. SICK PUPPIES, 'MAYBE' (2010) If you’re looking for something uplifting to spark a change in your life, Sick Puppies’ “Maybe” could be the song for you. This incredibly positive mid-tempo rocker was the band’s first big single of the decade and their third single off the _Tri-Polar_ album, connecting with the life-affirming message of not being afraid to try for something more. The song would enjoy its greatest success on Billboard Alternative Songs chart, peaking at No. 6, while also hitting No. 20 at Mainstream Rock and No. 15 on Billboard’s RockSongs chart. —CC

57. GREEN DAY, 'REVOLUTION RADIO' (2017) A spikey dose of classic Green Day punk excellence, “Revolution Radio” is exactly what fans have come to expect from the trio. A rollicking three-minute burst of angst-laden pop punk that lyrically takes issue with our age of “anti-social media,” this song is evidence of a band determined to grow old gracefully while maintaining a link to their scrappy roots. Viva la revolution! ––JRBig Machine
56. BADFLOWER, 'GHOST' (2018) Mental health has been a frequent subject in rock over the last year or two, but many songs don’t generate as much of a reaction as Badflower’s “Ghost.” Released as a single months before their debut album _OK I’m Sick,_ the song truly put the band on the map as not only a good rock ’n’ roll outfit but one with an important message. The lyrics are probably the most captivating part of the song, and they get very descriptive about the subject’s experience with depression and wanting to end their life — which they ultimately succeed at in the end. While it’s a bit graphic, the shock element is effective, and thus the song has become a staple in the group’s live set. —LSLava / Universal
55. BLACK VEIL BRIDES, 'IN THE END' (2012) With second album _Set the World on Fire_, Black Veil Brides burst onto the rock scene amid a wave of hype, Andy Biersack and co. considered by some as the would-be successors to My Chemical Romance’s theatrical throne. They were, however, lacking a monster single with genuine crossover appeal, that was until they dropped “In the End,” the lead single from 2012’s _Wretched and Divine: The Story of the Wild Ones_. Possessing a huge chorus, stratospheric solos and a carpe diem attitude, “In the End” saw Black Veil Brides come of age. ––JRRoswell / RCA
54. SIRVANA, 'CUT ME SOME SLACK' (2012) Before Brexit, there was Sirvana. The unlikely, but totally awesome, collaboration between Paul McCartney and the surviving members of Nirvana debuted at the 12-12-12 concert for Superstorm Sandy relief. With his cigar-box guitar, McCartney stated he had no idea a jam session with Dave Grohl was in fact a Nirvana reunion at first. That jam session resulted in “Cut Me Some Slack,” the crown jewel of the _Sound City_ documentary soundtrack, which would go on to win the Grammy for Best Rock Song in 2014. —Graham HartmannWarner Bros.
53. MUSE, 'RESISTANCE' (2010) Muse made great use of Matt Bellamy’s insane vocal range and some well placed piano to score a major hit in 2010 with the title track from the band’s _The Resistance_ album. With a few nods to George Orwell’s “1984” book, Bellamy speaks of “love” being the ultimate resistance on this epic, driving track. “Resistance” would top the Alternative Songs chart, peak at No. 7 on the Billboard Rock Songs chart and receive a pair of Grammy nominations for Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group With Vocal and Best Rock Song.—CC

52. SKILLET, 'SICK OF IT' (2013) Skillet have kept hard rock relevant well past the genre’s prime in the early 2000s. “Sick of It,” a single off of the band’s 2013 record _Rise_, is a perfect example of this band’s ability to create the most catchy of choruses while still staying true to the rebel spirit. “Sick of It” is a battle cry for everyone who has ever felt depressed or put down. It’s a call to arms for the beaten to rise up and take charge. —Taylor MarkarianHollywood Records
51. BREAKING BENJAMIN, 'FAILURE' (2015) The beauty of “Failure” definitely lies in its digestible abrasiveness. In fact, that's what's so great about everything Breaking Benjamin have done. There's a bite beneath the euphoria, and given it was almost entirely crafted by founder Benjamin Burnley during his band’s mid-decade hiatus — and features an entirely new lineup — the essence of Breaking Benjamin holds itself close. Coming back strong with a post-hiatus single called “Failure” may have tempted the fates, but Breaking Benjamin certainly came out on top.—Steven Loftin

50. BAD WOLVES, 'ZOMBIE' (2018) In a seemingly impossible feat, Bad Wolves have managed to not only cover one of the most powerful songs ever penned, but they've also given it a Cranberries approved snarl. It retains a subdued nature that paves the way for the rapturous chorus that we all know and love. It's the Bad Wolves teeth-showing snarl entwined with the respect the original deserves that moves “Zombie” into a dynamic, altruistic power-house. Unfortunately, Cranberries vocalist Dolores O'Riordan was set to add her vocals to the track the day she passed away. In a grand gesture, Bad Wolves ended up donating all proceeds from the single toher children. —SL

49. I PREVAIL, 'SCARS' (2016) One of this decade’s biggest breakout metalcore success stories, I Prevail have steadily built a strong reputation for themselves based on great songwriting, something evidenced on career highlight “Scars.” Possessing everything a brilliant modern metalcore track needs –– metal aggression, melodic sensibilities and a huge chorus –– “Scars” is a particularly impressive feat given it was penned on the band’s debut album. The kind of song it takes many bands decades to master, I Prevail perfected the formula with “Scars” in a fraction of that time. ––JRLakeshore Records
48. CHRIS CORNELL, 'THE PROMISE' (2017) When he was approached by producer Eric Esrailian to write a song for the film _The Promise_, Chris Cornell honorably agreed. The film was to focus on the Armenian Genocide, which had affected his wife Vicky’s family. The personal ties to the cause combined with his strong humanitarianism resulted in the title track, and his passion really resonated in his vocal delivery and lyrics. It’s a bit different than much of the work he had done in the past, but it has the same haunting vibe many of his songs do — especially considering it was the last he released before his death a few months later. Since then, his family and fans have carried on his legacy by encouraging us to “keep the promise.” —LSVirgin / EMI
47. THIRTY SECONDS TO MARS, 'THIS IS WAR' (2010) The title track to the band’s third album starts with Jared Leto’s whisper-quiet lyrics, but the song builds and erupts to an uplifting crescendo bolstered by the band’s fans who submitted vocals that were used for a chorus. “This Is War” is a soaring track that went on to top the Billboard Alternative Songs chart, hit No. 4 on the Rock Songs chart and eventually was gold certified for sales in the U.S.—CC

46. NOTHING MORE, 'THIS IS THE TIME (BALLAST)' (2014) Nothing More made their case for one of the 2010s best new arrivals, having finally caught their break after signing with Eleven Seven and getting a major push for their 2014 self-titled album. The band’s introduction came in the form of the crushing single “This Is the Time (Ballast).” A killer low end, pulse-pushing drumming and guitar work and Jonny Hawkins’ sick vocal range rightfully caught the attention of listeners, with the song climbing to No. 2 on the Billboard Mainstream Rock Chart. —CCBMG
45. ALICE IN CHAINS, 'NEVER FADE' (2018) Alice in Chains have a handful of songs about grieving and loss, especially on the albums following the death of Layne Staley. But the more lighthearted aura of _Rainier Fog’s_ “Never Fade,” compared to some of their other work, makes it shine in a different light. Inspired primarily by the deaths of Staley, Chris Cornell and vocalist William DuVall’s grandmother, the track offers an element of hope for those coping with the loss of a loved one. The harmonies in the choruses are so elegant and soft they could easily bring a tear toyour eye. —LS

THE HU, 'YUVE YUVE YU' (2019) The Hu may be the most unlikely breakout act of the 2010s. Most audiences have never heard anything like the Hu, but the incredible soul of their Mongolian folk roots mixed with the balls of rock icons like AC/DC creates an undeniably fun listen. The rock ’n’ roll swagger of “Yuve Yuve Yu” translates brilliantly to the Hu’s traditional Mongolian instruments, earning the song a staggering 30 million views on YouTube as of this posting. With the world becoming a smaller place every day, the Hu may soon become leaders of a world music revolution. —GHWarner Bros.
43. ROYAL BLOOD, 'FIGURE IT OUT' (2014) The U.K. duo of Mike Kerr and Ben Thatcher had started making inroads at rock radio over the course of 2014, but things really began to blow up for the band with the release of the fourth single from their self-titled debut disc. Kerr’s sick, solitary distortion-fueled bass guitar opens the song before Thatcher kicks in with the drums and beats. Kerr’s dance around trying to figure out a new relationship is ultimately quite danceable. The track ended up being the big hit from their debut, peaking at No. 3 on the Mainstream Rock chart. —CCRoadrunner
42. FEVER 333, 'MADE AN AMERICA' (2018) Fever 333 arrived on the scene in 2018, providing an intense passion and ferocious political-mindedness not seen since Rage Against the Machine two decades prior. While the comparisons are easy to make, the Jason Aalon Butler-led group are carving out their own place in the rock world, with the title track to their _Made an America_ EP unleashing a no holds barred aggression over some swinging verses and an anthemic chorus, all while addressing America’s problematic history with discrimination. —CCInterscope
41. THE STRUTS, 'COULD HAVE BEEN ME' (2013) There’s something to be said for persistence. The Struts somewhat quietly released the song “Could Have Been Me” in 2013, followed by their debut album _Everybody Wants_ in 2014, but it wasn’t until 2015 that their breakout single finally caught fire in the U.S. The uplifting anthem about living life to the fullest captured the attention of listeners, singer Luke Spiller opening the track with, “_Don’t want to live as an untold story / I wanna go out in a blaze of glory._” The message connected, serving as the band’s calling card and catapult to a buzzy rise in the rock world. “Could Have Been Me” hit No. 5 Alternative and No. 12 on the MainstreamRock chart. —CC
Puscifer Entertainment 40. PUSCIFER, 'GRAND CANYON' (2015) One of Puscifer’s secret weapons is the inspiration Maynard James Keenan takes from his home state of Arizona. The influence of nature is found throughout Puscifer’s gorgeous _Conditions of My Parole_ album, but even more lavish and addictive is “Grand Canyon” from 2015’s _Money Shot_. “Grand Canyon” is a grounding track for those lost in the ether, encouraging listeners to find comfort in Earth’s physical wonders and reawaken their appreciation for the gift of existence. —GHT-Boy / Universal
39. ROB ZOMBIE, 'DEAD CITY RADIO' (2013) One of the most important choices in a band’s career is picking an album’s lead single. When Rob Zombie opted to set the tone for 2013’s _Venomous Rat Regeneration Vendor_ with “Dead City Radio and the Gods of Supertown,” he made it clear that he was here for a good time. The song has a poppy flare to it, complete with keys, tambourines and some snazzy accents from guitarist John 5. The overall feel-good attitude is certain to ignite the listener’s instincts toparty. —KI
Columbia / Null Corporation 38. NINE INCH NAILS, 'CAME BACK HAUNTED' (2013) Alluding to their second resurrection, every move Nine Inch Nails have made has been purposeful; and nothing sounds as driven and swinging-lightbulb-in-an-empty-room eery as “Came Back Haunted.” As always there's some classic NIN glitching intensity at play on the album that no one at the beginning of this decade saw coming. The first since their second hiatus in 2008, those dark depths of Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross are plastered all over the decrepit walls of _Hesitation Marks_, and particularly “Came Back Haunted.” With its breathless haunting repetition that open and close, it’s a single that reminded us all just how fierce they could be. —SLWarner Bros.
37. RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS, 'THE ADVENTURES OF RAIN DANCE MAGGIE'(2011)
There could be a case for someone saying Red Hot Chili Peppers day is well and truly behind them, but in reality, all the Chilli Pepper's goodness is alive and kicking. Everything about _The Adventures of Rain Dance Maggie_ is quintessential. It's got a funk-driven bass line that raps along behind muted guitars and offbeat drums, leading to a euphoric melodic chorus that you feel you've always known. Given that it's certainly on the modern end of the California kings' singles, the proof is written across the captivating nature; Chilli peppers can most certainly still write a hit. That's not to mention some sweet, sweet cowbell. —SL300 Entertainment
36. HIGHLY SUSPECT, 'LYDIA' (2015) 2015 gave us a solid new voice in the rock world, as Highly Suspect arrived with their lead single “Lydia” from the _Mister Asylum_ album. A lurching guitar lick helps set the tension for singer Johnny Stevens’ tale of a tortured love story. His angst drips off the vocals as he sings, “_I’ve seen better days / So unafraid in my youth / I can’t breathe / Much less believe the truth._ The powerhouse performance certainly caught the attention of many in the rock world with the song climbing to No. 4 at Mainstream Rock radio and earning Highly Suspect a Grammy nomination for Best Rock Song.—CC

35. PAPA ROACH, 'GRAVITY' (2015) Retrospection is the order of the day for this Papa Roach cut. It conveys the complexities that arise in relationships, seemingly romantically, but the level they peg it at hits far beyond that of tangible love. With the addition of In This Moment vocalist Maria Brink, the perspective falls on equal terms, truly hitting home the intrinsic nature of human relationships. Factor in the barrelling nu-metal sound Papa Roach have finely tuned, and you've got a recipe for emotional turmoil. —SLEpic
34. CHEVELLE, 'TAKE ME TO THE GUNMAN' (2014) Chevelle raised their game with 2014’s _La Gargola_ album, experimenting a little more musically and taking on less obvious topics for musical inspiration. Among them, the media’s role in gun violence, which would be analyzed even more in the years to come. There’s a general unease in the instrumentation that begins the song with Pete Loeffler providing a gritty ferocity in the delivery of the titular lyrics. “Take Out the Gunman” topped the Mainstream Rock chart and finish as the fifth biggest song of the year on the samechart. —CC

33. ALTER BRIDGE, 'ADDICTED TO PAIN' (2013) It will come as a surprise to no one that Alter Bridge guitarist Mark Tremonti is a die-hard metalhead. And while “Addicted to Pain” maintains an upbeat, catchy rock ‘n’ roll beat, the shredder manages to sneak his love for heavy into small pockets of this song, tinging this _Fortress_ anthem with metallic tones that beautifully compliment Myles Kennedy’s bright, soulful vocals, ultimately making this opus a standout track on the band’s most memorable album. —KIDik Hayd
32. SLASH, 'YOU'RE A LIE' (2012) Slash and Myles Kennedy had an obvious chemistry from their very first songs together on 2010’s _Slash_, which featured a handful of other guest vocalists. The duo released their first full collaborative effort in 2011 with the Conspirators — _Apocalyptic Love_ — and “You’re a Lie” was the first taste of what the group had in store as a permanent entity. The song not only made the statement that Slash was going to continue on with the whole solo thing, but that he found a damn good team to do so with. Kennedy showcases his vocal range like never before, and Slash has just as much of the spotlight with his bluesy riffs and crisp solos. —LSCentury Media
31. IN THIS MOMENT, 'BLOOD' (2012) After primarily leaning more metal early in their career, In This Moment enjoyed their rock radio breakout with “Blood,” the title track from their fourth studio album. The song provided a perfect showcase for vocalist Maria Brink, allowing for a more vulnerable vocal in the verses, building to her more empowered and aggressive vocals in the chorus. The song would climb to No. 9 on both the Active Rock and Mainstream Rock charts, while opening new avenues for theband. —CC

29. BRING ME THE HORIZON, 'CAN YOU FEEL MY HEART?' (2013) An early precursor to the band’s full-on electro evolution on most recent album _amo_, “Can You Feel My Heart,” the opening track from 2013’s stunning LP, _Sempiternal_, saw U.K. rockers Bring Me The Horizon give in to their desire to pen a mainstream-friendly rock anthem. Built around catchy electronic beats and seeing frontman Oli Sykes deliver an impressive vocal performance, “Can You Feel My Heart” set the tone for the more measured and mature approach of _Sempiternal_, in the process displaying the tremendous songwriting ability of its creators. ––JR Warner Bros. / Machine Shop 28. LINKIN PARK, 'BURN IT DOWN' (2012) Another example of Linkin Park’s unrivalled sonic innovation, “Burn It Down,” taken from 2012 LP _Living Things_, is a cacophony of futuristic musical excellence. Sounding like the kind of thing you’d expect to hear in a nightclub 100 years from now, the band’s blend of electronica and rock has rarely sounded better than it does here. More than anything, though, “BURN IT DOWN,” proves just how special a frontman Chester Bennington was. There’ll never be another quite like him. ––JRReprise
27. DEFTONES, 'TEMPEST' (2012) This slow-burn rocker from the _Koi No Yokan_ opens with a soulful Chino Moreno vocal building to a propulsive explosion as “Tempest” ebbs and flows with atmospheric excellence. The track was inspired by end-of-the-world prophecies, with Moreno singing of the anticipation of such an event and theorizing how a demise might take place. The track peaked at No. 3 on the Mainstream Rock chart, becoming one of their most successful songs to date. —CCWind-Up
26. SEETHER, 'COUNTRY SONG' (2011) Leave it Seether to make a ranking of rock songs with a tune called "Country Song." The South African rockers dropped this humdinger in 2011 as the first single from that year's _Holding Onto Strings Better Left to Fray_. And what better way to introduce an album? The band led by singer-songwriter Shaun Morgan sprinkles this alt-rock kiss-off with just the right amount of Southern twang. Maybe not enough to skin a mule but still plenty to get the late-night party started. When the bandleader sings that he "cannot shake the taste of blood in my mouth," one can almost sense that same metallic tang. —PTAtlantic
25. SHINEDOWN, 'CUT THE CORD' (2015) If "Cut the Cord" isn't Shinedown's signature song, it's because the band has so many other energy-fueled rockers that could just as easily vie for that title. But the 2015 _Threat to Survival_ single is anthemic to its core, the tune's aggressive (but not passive-aggressive) melodic hook asking for a witness to its unfettered freedom. That said, the type of emancipation that "Cut the Cord" seeks is one that makes itself free from substance abuse, free from self-harm, free from all matter of personal demons that can haunt a listener's life — no pain, no gain, as the old saying goes. Still, the agony itself brings no reward. —PTRoswell / RCA
24. FOO FIGHTERS, 'WALK' (2011) The “do over” is a powerful thing, and Dave Grohl and company brilliantly captured that feeling of starting fresh with plenty of hope in their 2011 megahit “Walk.” The uplifting rocker turns anthem in the feverish chorus, giving the listener a motivational kick in the pants. The track topped both the Alternative and Mainstream Rock Songs charts in 2011, finishing fifth at alternative and sixth at Mainstream Rock for the year back in 2011. Grammy voters also liked what they heard as Foo Fighters added to the trophy case with Best Rock Performance and Best Rock Song honors at the Grammy Awards. —CCReprise
23. MY CHEMICAL ROMANCE, 'NA NA NA' (2010) The rock world was stunned when My Chemical Romance announced their much-anticipated comeback show on Halloween of this year, and songs such as “Na Na Na,” the lead single from last album-proper, _Danger Days: The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys_, demonstrate just how special this band is. An introduction into the world of the Killjoys, which vocalist Gerard Way would later flesh out with a subsequent comic book series, “Na Na Na” is a rip-roaring ride that finds the band singing about drugs, rebellion and blowing up the world. It was, simply put, the best punk song of 2010. ––JRIpecac
22. FAITH NO MORE, 'SUPERHERO' (2015) In 2015, Faith No More returned with their first album in nearly two decades, _Sol Invictus_. Though “Motherfucker” was the album’s first single,“Superhero” was the track that gloriously explored Faith No More’s full sonic spectrum. The bombastic and cinematic track is unapologetically odd, yet extremely fulfilling and catchy — the exact dynamics that brought Faith No More their cult status. The push-and-pull of Roddy Bottom’s unnerving keyboards and Jon Hudson’s crushing guitar is expertly balanced by Mike Patton, who performs his trademark vocal acrobatics throughout the piece. —GHBorn & Bred
21. DROPKICK MURPHYS, 'ROSE TATTOO' (2012) Imagine a new Dropkick Murphys song reaching “I’m Shipping Up to Boston” heights of popularity. Well, that’s what happened with “Rose Tattoo.” The beautiful track pays tribute to lost loved ones memorialized in ink, led by tear jerking mandolin and the mournful voice of Ken Casey. The _Signed and Sealed in Blood_ dirge feels timeless, while the cathartic tears fans have shed to “Rose Tattoo” could likely fill Boston Harbor. —GHBMG
20. A PERFECT CIRCLE, 'DISILLUSIONED' (2018) Upon their return, A Perfect Circle opened things up a bit, delivering the more somber and piano-led track “Disillusioned” from their _Eat the Elephant_ album. 19. A DAY TO REMEMBER, 'ALL I WANT' (2010) Floridian pop-punk / metalcore crossover quintet A Day To Remember have grown over the past decade into one of their scene’s breakout stars. 2011’s excellent _What Separates Me From You_ LP saw the band embracing the heavier side of their sound, but second track “All I Want” showed how, despite their gruff edge, the band were masters of a poppy chorus. A glorious coming together of pop-punk hype and metallic crunch, “All I Want” is a thunderous blast of killer rockmusic. ––JR

18. QUEENS OF THE STONE AGE, 'I APPEAR MISSING' (2013) Sure, _Rated R_ and _Songs for the Deaf_ are amazing albums, but _…Like Clockwork_ was a new breed of achievement for Queens of the Stone Age entirely. Accompanied by some of the best music videos in recent history, _…Like Clockwork_ struck heavy with “I Appear Missing,” an art-rock mood piece with a huge chorus and descending rhythms. “I Appear Missing” is a phenomenal cut from a band who discovered the depths of their creativity through wild experimentation and a near-death experience from Josh Homme. —GHRoadrunner
17. STONE SOUR, 'GONE SOVEREIGN / ABSOLUTE ZERO' (2012) Nothing about Stone Sour’s _House of Gold & Bones_ was ordinary, and Stone Sour set the tone for that by unleashing the rare double-single at the top of promotion for the record. “Gone Sovereign” and “Absolute Zero” tied together to kick off their album, with the opening furious guitar-driven salvo setting the story of a man tasked with a mission most would not take, while the secondary portion finds Corey Taylor singing from the perspective of a reluctant hero ready to get the job done regardless of what others may think of him. The driving “Absolute Zero” portion of the double single would eventually peak at No. 2 on the Mainstream Rock chart. —CCFueled By Ramen
16. TWENTY ONE PILOTS, 'STRESSED OUT' (2015) Musically, there’s little that makes Twenty One Pilots a rock band in the traditional sense, but despite their electro-heavy sound, they’re a band born out of the rock scene. Break-out single “Stressed Out” currently stands at over ONE BILLION Spotify streams — proof if ever it was needed that the Ohio duo are a seriously big deal — and listening to its lyrics, it’s not hard to see why the song has resonated with so many music fans. A meditation on nostalgia and the trauma of adulthood, “Stressed Out” is a modern classic. ––JRRazor & Tie
15. THE PRETTY RECKLESS, 'HEAVEN KNOWS' (2013) We thought choirs of school children were really a Pink Floyd and Alice Cooper thing, but The Pretty Reckless recruited one of their own for the anthemic _Going to Hell_ single, “Heaven Knows.” After the chime of a school bell and some stomping effects, vocalist Taylor Momsen comes roaring in with a sing-along chant about belonging “way down below.” The song is the first of the band’s catalog to reach the top of the Mainstream Rock Songs chart, starting a string of consecutive No. 1’s all the way into their follow-up album. What ended up being even more appealing about the single later on was its censored video, which showcased Momsen’s no-fucks, rock ’n’ rollattitude. —LS

14. GHOST, 'DANCE MACABRE' (2018) Originally forming as a doom metal throwback, Ghost progressed into an arena band by the late 2010s. The softening of Ghost could have been disastrous, but the gigantic “Dance Macabre” proved doubters wrong, giving the rock world a Queen-sized anthem that can tickle thousands of concertgoers at note one. The twist of “be wit chu / bewitch you” made the track even more satisfying, crushing a pop cliche with a touch of the occult. Expect “Dance Macabre” to remain a cessation for Ghost’s set list for years to come. —GHRazor & Tie
13. STARSET, 'MONSTER' (2016) What have we become? Technology has definitely impacted how we interact with others, but at what cost? Starset vocalist Dustin Bates analyzes that moment of self-awareness where the darker tendencies of a less socialized world are realized. The synth-heavy and highly catchy track would enjoy a monster 2017, peaking at No. 2 on the Mainstream Rock chart, but also finishing as the second most played song at Mainstream Rock radio for the year. —CCPocket Kid
12. DEAD SARA, 'WEATHERMAN' (2012) In the early 2010s, Dead Sara were primed to take over modern rock, mixing a grunge influence with more classic Fleetwood Mac sensibilities. “Weatherman” was their breakout hit, introducing the world to the tornado of a frontwoman named Emily Armstrong. Dead Sara have yet to match the impact of “Weatherman,” but the song marks a high point in 2010s rock and further cemented the timelessness of one guitar, one bass, one kit and a singer. —GHRepublic Records
11. GRETA VAN FLEET, 'HIGHWAY TUNE' (2017) That scream. Now, you hear it daily in radio and TV commercials, but when the then unknown Greta Van Fleet launched “Highway Tune” in 2017, it instantly catapulted the Michigan band’s name to the top, penetrating the consciousness of generations of rock fans. It’s a sublime reminder of everything that made the burgeoning era of late ‘60s and early ‘70s rock so captivating — primal vocal passion, hot-to-the-touch guitar playing and a defined sense of rhythmic swing that made this music such a physical force long before moshing was ushered into tradition. —JDCapitol
10. ALICE IN CHAINS, 'HOLLOW' (2012) That f—king riff. Despite their brilliant return in 2009 with _Black Gives Way to Blue_, Alice in Chains truly embraced their dark side once again with 2013’s _The Devil Put Dinosaurs Here_. The album’s lead single, “Hollow,” is a punishing cut nearly in the vein of sludge metal. The track’s bleakness touches the band’s classic days but soars at the direction of Jerry Cantrell’s vocal mix with William DuVall. “Silence, so loud” is an especially dense line, creating that iconic AIC ear candy balancing vicious depression with a pop sensibility. —GHReprise
9. MY CHEMICAL ROMANCE, 'SING' (2010) The biggest hit from the band’s _Danger Days_ album, “Sing” performed well as a single for MCR partly due to its inclusion on hit TV show _Glee_, whose cast covered it for an episode. A euphoric call to arms that saw the band broadening their sound with the use of more modern influences and sounds, “Sing” was demonstrative of the brave new world My Chemical Romance created for themselves in the aftermath of _The Black Parade_’s success. "All I'm trying to do is live my motherfucking life" has without a doubt become a mantra to live by, and with the prowling Death Punch behind it, it's just about unstoppable, as proven by its status as a firm fan favorite. —SLWarner Bros.

AVENGED SEVENFOLD, 'SO FAR AWAY' (2011) A slow-burning, largely acoustic number that goes right to the heart of the loss Avenged Sevenfold were experiencing when making fifth LP _Nightmare_, “So Far Away” is a highly emotional tribute to their fallen comrade, The Rev. What this song lacks in metallic crunch it more than makes up for with its raw feeling, frontman M. Shadows laying his sorrows on the line for all to hear. The guitar solos present throughout, meanwhile, are simply sublime. ––JRRoswell / RCA
4. FOO FIGHTERS, 'SOMETHING FROM NOTHING' (2014) Foo Fighters took us on a musical journey in more ways that one with 2014’s _Sonic Highways_ album and documentary series. Exploring the U.S.’s great music scene, the band ventured to Chicago to work at Steve Albini’s Electric Audio Studio and called upon Illinois royalty with Cheap Trick’s Rick Nielsen lending a hand on guitar. The result of this worked up collaboration inspired by Chicago’s scene with “Something From Nothing,” a chart-topping song at Alternative and Mainstream Rock Radio that took listeners for a ride through all Foo Fighters can do musically while speaking to that “can do” spirit that made them a success. It’s inspiring, and itrocks. —CC

3. NOTHING MORE, 'GO TO WAR' (2017) War can be a lot of push and pull, and you get some of that musically with Nothing More’s “Go to War,” which provides solitary falsetto one minute and in-your-face aggression the next. Tribal Depeche Mode-esque drums and powerful synths propel the song forward, as Jonny Hawkins unspools the torment of a relationship fracturing. The hard-hitting track was a monster single in 2017, topping the Mainstream Rock chart and earning the band their first Grammy nominations for Best Rock Song and Best Rock Performance. —CCReprise
2. DEFTONES, 'DIAMOND EYES' (2010) Deftones managed to marry all the elements of what they do well into one song with the title track to 2010’s _Diamond Eyes_ album. The crushing heaviness chugs along with sludgy bliss, eventually giving way to a hypnotically sung atmospheric chorus from Chino Moreno. Looking to escape reality for a bit, Moreno paints a cosmic landscape while celebrating life as he knows it to be. The track was the band’s first major single after bassist Chi Cheng’s tragic auto accident and helped put the band on the right path to the next chapter of their career. —CCHell, Etc.
1. MARILYN MANSON, 'THIRD DAY OF A SEVEN DAY BINGE' (2014) Preceded by a fuzzed-out bass line and clean guitar strumming, Marilyn Manson introduced himself as a new kind of monster with “Third Day of a Seven Day Binge.” Following his self-professed “comeback” with _Born Villain_, Manson topped himself in 2015 with _The Pale Emperor_, an album which modernized a ‘90s icon by embracing the blues and stripping down his often grandiose production. Metaphorically, the numbers three and seven relate to Christ’s rising from the dead, but Manson wrote the lyrics from a more practical standpoint. “I look at the song as, you’re in a shower, it steamed up and you wrote ‘Help Me’ on the mirror. Then when the steam goes away, you’re looking at yourself. The song is me talking to myself, more than anything.” For its masterful composition, rejuvenation of a 46-year-old Manson, bleak feel, unpredictable nature and universal acclaim, we dub “Third Day of a Seven Day Binge” the best rock song of the 2010s. —GH Categories: News , Rock, Videos
