LUTHERAN THEOLOGY OF THE REFORMATION The Lutheran Reformation is still all about Jesus; that is, faithfully preaching and teaching the good news of Jesus Christ and standing for the teachings of God’s Word as they have been confessed in all times and all places wherever the Gospel is purely taught according to a pure understanding of it and where the Sacraments are administered according to Christ’s institution.WHAT IS A LUTHERAN?
What is a Lutheran? While there are a variety of ways one could answer this question, one very important answer is simply this, “A Lutheran is a person who believes, teaches and confesses the truths of God’s Word as they are summarized and confessed in the Book of Concord.”. The Book of Concord contains the Lutheran confessions of faith. THE REFORMERS ON THE ASCENSION by Rev. Aaron Moldenhauer The Festival of the Ascension marks Jesus’ ascension into heaven forty days after Easter. The scriptural accounts of the event are straightforward. Jesus, while blessing his disciples, is taken up and a cloud hides him from their sight. Two angels appear and tell the disciples that this Jesus will return in ON THE FREEDOM OF A CHRISTIAN On the Freedom of the Christian was published in Wittenberg as the third of three writings that characterized the evangelical theology of the Reformation. The Roman Curia had issued the bull Exsurge Domine on June 15, 1520 in which Luther was threatened to be charged as a heretic and ordered to halt his preaching. LUTHER ON THE FAMILY Luther on the Family. In our time it’s clear that the state of the family is under attack. As we look around we see the definition of marriage being destroyed. The number of children born out of wedlock is skyrocketing. Cohabiting before marriage is the norm, even the expectation. And this is not even taking into account divorce, which KATHARINA VON BORA LUTHER by Dr. Jack Kilcrease. Katharina von Bora is most famous for being the wife of Martin Luther. Traditionally, sources have suggested she was born in 1499. Nevertheless, because early modern Europe was lacking in birth certificates, there is no direct evidence of this. There is also something of a dispute about the location of her birth. ADIAPHORA IN THE LUTHERAN CONFESSIONS Falling from horses can be dangerous, so let’s briefly consider what history and the Confessions have to say about properly handling “adiaphora”. The term became important in the Reformation first because the Reformers needed to defend against the Roman idea that customs add to salvation, but second because some began to argue thatthe
LUTHER'S MORNING PRAYER Luther likewise models this in the opening sentence of the morning prayer, “I thank You, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, Your dear Son”, confident that what a Christian asks will be heard and provided by the Father. As Philip Melanchthon put it in the Apology of the Augsburg Confession, “So prayer relies upon God’s mercy ALBRECHT DÜRER'S FOUR HORSEMEN by Dcs. Carolyn Brinkley Powerful, intriguing, and terrifying! The Four Horseman woodcut is from Albrecht Dürer’s Apocalypse series published in Nuremberg in 1511. The scene evokes a feeling of unstoppable devastation. It is almost as if the surging horses will leap from the printed page and the viewer will be caught in their pathof Read More >

THE AUTHORITY OF SCRIPTURE The Authority of Scripture. Central to the project of the Lutheran Reformation was the restoration of the supreme authority of Scripture within the life of the Church. Contrary to what is claimed by many contemporary Roman Catholic apologists, the supreme authority of the Bible was by no means an innovation of the Reformers. HOW A CHRISTIAN SHOULD READ AND WATCH THE NEWS According to Luther’s analysis, Islam attacked the church with false doctrine, the state with sanctioned murder, and the family through polygamy. Islam is especially dangerous in that it attacks not just one estate, but all three which are necessary for a God-pleasing life. Luther explains, “Lies destroy the spiritual estate; murder, the LUTHER ON THE CROSS AND SUFFERING Luther addresses this with four reasons. First, “in this way wants to make us conformed to the image of his dear Son, Christ, so that we may become like him here in suffering and there in that life to come in honor and glory.”. So, we suffer in this life, so that we would be like our Lord Jesus who suffered in this life.SOLUS CHRISTUS
Specifically, the Reformation was about Jesus Christ’s death on the cross as our only source of forgiveness, life, and salvation. Luther said, “The cross alone is our theology.”. Another way to say this is Solus Christus, or “Christ alone” saves us. Salvation through Jesus Christ alone is the heart of the Reformation.LUTHER AND CALVIN
by Rev. Matthew L.G. Zickler Anyone who has spent any small amount of time studying the history of the Reformation, or likewise the origin of Protestant Churches in America, has encountered the name of John Calvin. Calvin is considered by some the one who codified the Reformation in the form that it finally took and Read More > THE LUTHER SEAL: SUMMARY OF THE GOSPEL The most enduring symbol of the Lutheran Reformation is the seal that Luther himself designed to represent his theology. By the early 1520s, this seal begins to appear on the title page of Luther’s works.Skip to content
