WHAT IS M-BASE?
What M-Base is: An acronym for Macro – Basic Array of Structured Extemporizations. For us this means expressing our experiences through music that uses improvisation and structure as two of its main ingredients. BIOGRAPHY | STEVE COLEMAN Biography. Steve began playing music just days before his 14th birthday as a freshman at South Shore High School on the south side of Chicago. His first instrument was violin but later that year he switched to the alto saxophone. For three years Steve studied the basics of music and saxophone technique, then he decided that hewanted to learn

SINE DIE | STEVE COLEMAN Sine Die. Liner Notes. Born in one of music’s traditional centers, Chicago, on September. 20th, 1956, Coleman grew up on the South Side, within walking distance of the gamut of musical traditions, from blues to jazz to pop, that the Windy City has fostered. DROP KICK | STEVE COLEMAN Drop Kick. Liner Notes. In 1981, Steve Coleman and Five Elements was conceived with a desire to play unrestricted, creative music based on the living experiences of African-American people and the African Diaspora. The brain child of Steve Coleman, the band began by rehearsing in basements in neighborhoods such as New York City’s Harlem and Bedford-Stuyvesant, attempting to capture the RESISTANCE IS FUTILE Resistance Is Futile. Line Notes. Steve Coleman and Five Elements live at Le JAM, Montpellier France. These CDs were recorded live at a club called Le JAM in the city of Montpellier in the South of France. THE ASCENSION TO LIGHT The Ascension to Light. Most of these compositions are studies in sound. The written notes are meant to provide some insight into the intended symbolism in the music.NEUTRAL ZONE

This composition is more traditional in terms of concept but the chord notation (for some of the chords) is something that was developed to express non-standard chord structures simply. Looking back on Steve Coleman’s recorded output over the past dozen years and listening to this new two-CD set, I’m reminded of poet Jay Wright’s remark, following one of his readings, to an audience member who commented that Wright seemed to be trying to weave together a lot of differentthings.
