VACCINATION: WHAT DID EDDY SAY? December 20, 2020. To learn how Mary Baker Eddy approached the subject of vaccination, we reviewed her published writings, correspondence, and submissions to newspapers, as well as the magazines that she established for The Church of Christ, Scientist. While she addressed this issue as early as 1880, she was most engaged on it from 1900 to1902.

Claims are frequently made that a widely circulated article titled “A Treatment for Every Day” was written by Mary Baker Eddy and published in The Christian Science Journal. This piece is in fact a conflation of several items written by different authors, not all of whom are identifiable. DOES THE SECRET GARDEN HAVE CONNECTIONS WITH CHRISTIAN Burnett published The Secret Garden in 1911. Over the years some have believed that she was a Christian Scientist and that Christian Science teachings can be found in this novel. But the book actually does not contain any teachings that can be specifically identified as representing Christian Science as taught by Eddy. LAYING THE CORNERSTONE: “LET THIS CEREMONY BE SIMPLE Cornerstone ceremonies were held for both the Original Mother Church (May 21, 1894) and its Extension (July 16, 1904). In our collection, we have a trowel from the second ceremony. It is sterling silver with three Gorham hallmarks and a bone (ivory) handle. This beautiful object raised some interesting questions. WOMEN OF HISTORY: VIOLET HAY As one biographer notes, “From her earliest years as a student of Christian Science, Violet Spiller energetically dedicated herself to the extension of God’s kingdom on earth through active participation in the church organisation.” 1.
