ABOUT MATHPICKLE
MathPickle was founded in 2010 to inject new ideas into the classroom. It is the driving force to get curricular unsolved problems into classrooms worldwide – one for each grade K-12. A conference in November 2013 established the thirteen unsolved problems. To aid with the dissemination, MathPickle is seeking a $1,000,000 reward – theprize
ORGANIZED BY GRADE
Puzzles, games and mini-competitions organized by grade. Children at play are not playing about; their games should be seen as their most serious-minded activity. Logic and mathematics are nothing but specialized linguistic structures. Beauty is the first test: there is PENCIL & PAPER GAMES Arrows fall into this category. It’s a great logic game, but probably not one to recommend for the home. Categorize 9 games based on the answer to two questions: 1) Will Emperor Jiaqing win / tie / lose if he goes the first. 2) Will the Pirate, Ching Shih, win / tie /lose
MONDRIAN ART PUZZLES (MULTIPLICATION, ALGEBRA) Mondrian's score is equal to the area of the largest rectangle minus the area of the smallest rectangle. This score must be made as small as possible. Here it is 42 - 7 = 35 which is much too large. This is a better solution. Here Mondrian's score is 30 - 7 = 23 which is still too large, but much better than before. MONDRIAN ART PUZZLES Mondrian Art Puzzles. (MathPickle, 2015) This first video with Brady Haran for Numberphile is a joy for me. It is, however, not the type of video to show a class because it will demotivate them. You never want your students to believe they are competing against computers. They will do better to believe they are creating and discovering original MEAN, MEDIAN, MODE (UNIQUE INTEGER CHALLENGE) Mean, Median and Mode mini-challenge (MathPickle, 2015) This puzzle gets students involved in calculating mean, median and mode. As well as teaching these statistical terms, it is also appropriate for an algebra challenge. Compared to other MathPickle challenges this one has a relatively high entry level. Top students will get into it, butsome
EMBRYO MORPHOGENESIS (PATTERN DISCOVERY) Embryo Morphogenesis (pattern discovery) | MathPickle. Embryo Morphogenesis is a mathematical mini-universe. It is governed by laws which your students must figure out. Mini-mathematical universes like this are possibly a great way to learn the scientific method. It stillneeds work.
NO THREE IN A LINE
This is a great idea to get your students thinking about patterns. Watch the video above first. There are some changes that improve the experience: 1) I now start the class by getting them to solve the 3×3 city with six skyscrapers. Persist until it is solved. Then I start them out on the 4×4, but aim for a classroom failure before releasing BUBBLING CAULDRONS (SINGLE DIGIT ADDITION) Bubbling Cauldrons. After students have found the optimal answer (eight frogs in two bubbling cauldrons) you can challenge students in multiple directions. Let your students decide: 1) David Martin (2020 President of Math Council of Alberta) suggests asking students how MATHPICKLE | PUT YOUR STUDENTS IN A PICKLE!PDPUZZLESGAMESABOUT USBLOGINSPIRED PEOPLE MathPickle’s original dream was to get $1,000,000 prize money behind these thirteen unsolved problems of mathematics – one for each grade K-12. This is a game for 3-8 players. Players start by choosing different numbers less than 10. This is their initial fish size. Everyone also agrees to the size of fish that will win the game. It is perfect to give students motivation to subtract fractions and turn the result into a percentage. Start the class by naming an empress and getting her to introduce her bickering children. It’s all fun until the children start squabbling over the kingdom. KAJITSU – SYMMETRY PUZZLES Kajitsu. (MathPickle, 2012) Kajitsu puzzles are for students learning rotational & mirror symmetry. They are the most beautiful puzzles I have created so I love them a lot. Download instructions and an extensive set of these beautiful puzzles here. Creative Mornings talk about puzzle and board game design. One of the best features of your puzzles is how they engage a wide spectrum of learners, something that is difficult for teachers. Your math puzzles are remarkable and enjoy and learn from them regardless of their mathematical understanding. This is as close to a “silver bullet” as I’ve seen. Jason Kornoely Fourth Grade Teacher, Pine Ridge Elementary, Grand Rapids, Michigan I stumbled upon your site, MathPickle.com, this morning and two hours later I’m still there. Just wanted to drop you a brief note to say thank you for all the great resources, ideas, and inspiring videos! I can’t wait to use some these materials this Fall with my elementary mathematics methods students as well as try the unsolved problems with my two children. Amy Tanner Assistant Professor, Education Department, St. Catherine University Co-Winner of the 2016 George Pólya Award by the Mathematical Association of America If you want to support my work please consider a monthly donation through Patreon – you can do it here.
